This is an ingenius program. I run it on an M505 and speeds went from 154% to 238% on Benchmark!!! I have it set safely to 50Mhz, but may increase it to fine tune it. I haven't had any problems yet, and by far it is well worth the money! I use it for my Skyscape products (which I run off of the SD card) and results come up almost instantly!

WARNING: AFTERBURNER DOES NOT WORK ON SONY CLIE T665 This SEEMS like a great program. I'll never know. I bought a registered version because my PDA isn't on the unsupported list. Suppose I should have done a demo test first. The menus looked exciting. I sure with I could use this program. :-(

I use it for more than one year on a Palm VX at 26MHz instead of original 20MHz and it works fine ! Now, I'm using a M515 for two weeks. I did few tries at 40MHz instead of original 33MHz. It seems to work fine although a bip is heard each time I exit from an application...

I bought a 16mhz Palm III for my wife to type up college work on when she's away from home. I have a 20Mhz Palm III (I think) and on my machine the palm portable keyboard refresh rate is about as fast as I can type - however - the new 16mhz wasn't up to scratch with words appearing up to 3 or 4 seconds after I'd typed them. AFTERBURNER - set to 24mhz - has solved this problem, now I can type at ease. Hopefully it won't chronically drain the batteries! Thumbs up. Info: 16mhz Palm III running Palm OS 3.0 - Afterburner version 3.20

Works fine even with Irda/Serial support. But take care: on my TRGpro I allways need a HARD-RESET after changing batteries, when Afterburner is activated during battery-change!

Great software. Everything I chose to overclock just flies. Makes using Liberty (Gameboy emulator) much easier with the increased speed. Very small, very easy to use, and very effective. Well worth $8!

Used Afterburner for a couple of years now and it rocks. Puts your Palm in TURBO and leaves one wondering what the heck they do at the factory to cripple these devices so much. I had a slight problem with my GoType driver (which requires beam to be turned on), but Afterburner allows you to tweak the speed for every app, so I turned down the juice on the driver and it worked fine. BTW, the default values work good, but 5 minutes of reading & tweaking and you can boost the speed even more. No better money spent for a Palm app.

This software is well worth your money. My Palm m515 benchmark rating went from 156% to 240%, running rock-steady at 54MHz instead of 33MHz.
This is an improvement of 54%. I use it mainly for running the (also excellent) Planetarium software where the extra performance is cleary noticable.

Great Program. Perfect for running some of the newer RPGs that have 3D like graphics on older Visors or Palms with 16mhz cpus. Makes my Original 2MB Visor run like a Neo. So far its very stable when i'm running programs that tend to choke my system at normal speeds.

On my Kyocera Smartphone, Afterburner really wreaks havoc with my IR, Modem, and Graffiti. I have tried slower clock speeds and configurations. Finally, I have given up and disabled it because my devices and Palm apps kept locking up. Looking forward to a more stable version.

Looks great so far, haven't seen reviews yet on whether or not it will work on the Handspring Neo. The Neo benchmarked at 201% before Afterburner (compared to the Palm IIIxe). After running all apps at 37mHz went up to 228% not that bad. The Neo is a 33mHz chip by the way. Once I register I want to see what this baby can really do :)

I took a stopwatch and measured the performance increase w/o Afterburner hack running: it boosts my Palm IIIxe apps from 30-50% (search in datebook, QuickSheet recalculation, IrDA hotsync...) while having the device still unchanged stable and absolutely reliable. Simply worth every penny! :-)

Great stuff! For something that really "messes" with the inner core of my Visor Platinum's operation, it's incredibly stable. I have not yet had a single crash due to Afterburner. If there is a downside to this app, it's that it could be a battery drain. When 3.0w was released a few days ago, I tried running my Visor Platinum (native speed 33MHz) at 50MHz. The speed benefit was very visible, but so was the battery drain. :D Now I have my Visor Platinum running at much more modest 39MHz, and I think I found a happy medium between the speed benefit and the battery longevity. Highly recommended stuff. Oh, QuickBits that others have mentioned is also great. Along with QuickBits, the Benchmark shows my Platinum running at 290% (as opposed to 204% without Afterburner and QuickBits). Not bad at all. :)

Support from developer is even more excellent. We have worked on my problem whole morning, and now it is solved. It also works well with QuickBits. The best 8$ I have spent on app for my Visor.

Phenomenal App!!! I've been a registered user since 3.0 first came out - helped in troubleshooting some of the problems with the IIIC - and it's a testament to the quality of this developer's programming that this version (3.0U) works with no apparent problems on my new M505. I'm running it at 45mhz! No problems with the screen at all, access to the 16mb SD card is much faster, and access via MSMount is almost fast enough to keep it enabled at all times! WAY TO GO!!! GRAB THIS IF YOU HAVE A NEW PALM DEVICE!!!

Downloaded the demo and within 1 day registered the product. I own a Palm Vx with DateBK4d, TimeTraveler, Avantgo and Vindigo, all of these products have improved in speed dramatically. Using Benchmark showed the Palm running at 150%, switch on Afterburner and it jumped to 250%. Hotsyncing via IR was dramatically improved. Using the suggested settings I have not see any adverse affects yet! There is increased power drainage, however you can set a power limit at which point to slow back down to the Palms normal speed. No problem spending the $8 on this one.

I've been using this for over a year now, and simply would not go back to my old, slow system. It runs perfectly on my Palm IIIxe (using either HackMaster *or* TealMaster - both work correctly) alongside several other hacks. HandMap loads quickly, DateBk4 screams, and AvantGo is usable. This little app does exactly what it claims to without fail.

I've been having a problem with AB3t on my Visor Deluxe. My testing doesn't seem to show the problem is related to any of my other hacks. But *any* time I turn on, then try to turn off Beam Receive I get a Fatal Error. The error doesn't happen right when I turn off Beam Receive. It happens when I exit the Preferences window (no matter HOW I choose to exit). The error box only states "Fatal Exception" and offers me a reset button. I reset and everthing seems to restore just fine. If I turn off AB3t then I can turn Beam Receive on/off at will with no problems. I've emailed to author and he asked me if I was using IRlink (the manual calls out problems with this program). I told him no and have had no further follow-up from him since. I just emailed him again, so we'll see what happens. I just added in TrapWeaver hoping this might help, but no joy. I don't use the beam function much so I can live with the problem, but it is annoying. On the upside, the program makes DateBk4, Wordsmith, and AvantGo much nicer to use on a 16mhz unit. Bob

Excellent program, I have used it on both my Palm IIIx and IIIxe. I have been running at 45 Mhz for several months without any problems. I have many large databases and DOC files on my palm. The normal palm runs too slow to handle these files. Afterburner speeds up the palm and makes it useful to work with my data. I have not had any data losses or resets due to this program. I'm amazed at this app; the speed difference on my IIxe is remarkable. With 6K+ on it, the little Palm was dragging, but now, even running at a modest 24 or 26Mhz, it responds right away. Excellent for users of Datebk4 or any word processing app; the difference for me using SmartDoc with the Palm keyboard is worth twice the price alone. Seems to be playing nicely with EV Plug Base.

I registered this app before even trying it, based on the good things I've heard from friends. I installed it on my Visor Prism and it crashed on me a few times. Then I went and read the included manual which made things clearer, and finally got an optimal setting at 40Mhz. WOW, the performance is very much noticeable. Running a game like bubblepuzzle can really tell you the difference.
At first I had problems using it with my Stowaway keyboard, but running things at 40Mhz fixed things. I'm just amazed at the performance boost. Now my cursor can actually keep up with my typing! Well worth the $8 bucks.

Just one thing, don't forget to delete the Afterburner preferences before upgrading from a previous version. This can be done by using the PrefMgr program. I hereby apologize to Dan Wee. His support of the product is first rate. Version 3.0s DOES support PPK, but it all depends on how fast you're going. 45Mhz? Don't hold your breath. The 42-44 Mhz range is your best bet for PPK support. Daniel calls this a hardware limitation and I'm sure he's right. You can only move an F-14 so fast before it comes apart in the air. At the same time it seems that there has to be a way to stabilize things via software. Perfect software would, but we all know that perfect software is awful hard to come by. As far as economy goes, AfterBurner is priced about average, and you do get quite a bit for your money. If you're looking for a well put together piece of software, very configurable, with a nice GUI, then this is the place to be. Individual speedups for each app is also an extremely nice feature. This is what you're spending your money for, and it IS worth the price. Simply put, if these and other compatibility options are not important to you, and all you're looking for is a raw speedup, Get ClockupDA. It is free, but it's not this good. Again, the software isn't perfect, but Dan Wee's support of it puts it over the edge. I apologize again for my initial bad review. Thanks Dan!

Support for Stowaway PPK? That's a negative, good buddy. ^Repeat^ does NOT, N-O-T...support Stowaway! Worked fine pre-install, disabled hack plus soft reset did the trick. Re-enable Afterburner and guess what? Also, no major improvement over Clockup DA, which is Freeware. Gotta love good freeware. Anyway, I just bought the registered version of this for the second time because the old one didn't support Prism. ClockupDA did, but no PPK support. Shoulda' saved my money. Anyway, that's a big 'ole no bueno on this one...it's a great app, but the advertised features need to be there and good freeware will do the same thing for (obviously) much less. Sorry.

I have to agree with Madison that 3.0r is a nightmare and also caused my Palm IIIc to keep crashing - I was also surprised it let me choose speeds above 32Mhz. I love my previous Afterburner 3.0q, but I'm upset with the 3.0r, I have a Palm IIIe and it caused me to soft reset every time I loaded it. I got a fatal exception dialogue box. I ran it on benchmark, Liberty, <- ( the reason i got it)and Mapopolis. It reseted me every time. I'm also upset that I have to re register every time I get a new version of Afterburner, it should be one reg fits all versions. It was great once upon a time, but now AB has become too complex for many 'average' users. Should come with a specific guide and suggested settings for various Palm models.
Furthermore, Visor Prism and Platinum users are SOL until Afterburner is updated. It actually slowed down my Prism and didn't run properly. Also had serious screen refresh issues on my former Palm IIIc even with the fix.
Email upgrades and updates were prompt (and numerous) until 3.0q, but lately it's been rather quiet on the AB front.

Holy Cow! I just installed Afterburner on my new Sony Clie which I've been bench comparing to a Visor Platinum and now the Sony is faster than the Platinum. Amazing!! The pre-Afterburner Clie benchmark was around 87%, after using the EZ CPU settings in the Readme doc it clocked in at 249% (and it feels like it to). I can now scroll through very large databases (or do lookups) and finish substantially before the Visor Platinum does. First of all i have to say that this is a very good program. Let's reiterate what it does, it speeds up all the programs in have running on my Vx. My girlfriend also has a Vx but with almost 7megs to spare. I on the other hand being the download freak that i am have less that 1 meg left but with afterburner my Vx runs faster than hers. The only problem is the palm portable keyboard which wouldn't work unless you reduce the speed. All in all i give it five stars. Keep up the good work!

It's a great program. FastCPU is harder to use and harder to call up. FastCPU didn't handle the sound on a slowed game, whereas Afterburner did. HOWEVER, one unfortunate fact: The author seems less responsive than he might be. I asked him some questions about the LCD changes on version q, and he answered me (at least he did that) by telling me to check the documentation. If the documentation had explained it, I wouldn't have asked him. I paid for the registered version. It came with two other files for "screen hacking." There was no information or text about what these were. It turned out that both were for the Palm IIIc only, and I had to uninstall them again. Hey, can't you give a little readme.1st file or something and tell us what you've given us?
However, in spite of the above, the program itself is probably the best of this class.

Datebook3, Supernames and z'catalogue are quick and responsive. Imagine taking your PentiumII 200Mhz and making it perform like a PentiumIII 500Mhz without restarting! That's what it's like. Get it now and wonder why Palm never gave you these options.

Now it is very stable and I never had problem with the last version (I couln't say that with 3.0a, 3.0b...). You can really feel the speed and I used a timer to calculate the work with big soft : incredible !! I don't really know if it is dangerous for the Palm but I put a 26Mhz frequency and it works very good !! A MUST !!

This program is SWEET! But Daniel, the overclocking limit for older EZ-CPU's is actually 24 mHz not 23. Maybe if you add a 25mHz option, it might work on a PalmIII

I downloaded this two days ago and went back to register it within an hour. This is an absolute killer program. It works perfectly on my Palm IIIxe. At 24mhz It accellerated from a benchmark of 108 to 230! I have seen no side-effects from overclocking the processor of any kind. It's a wonderful program at a great price.

I agree with the other reviewers--great program. I had a question of the author, Dan Yee, and he was back to me via email in an HOUR, and this late in the evening! Too, Afterburner makes Datebk4 a lot more useful to me. I find the screen redraw in Datebk4 (without Afterburner) slow enough to make editing items awkward. I recently started using Afterburner 3.0, and it speeds things up enough to make the editing in Datebk4 more tolerable.

This program has ruined my appreciation of shareware. Every other piece I have now seems worthless in comparison. Worth five stars for performance and support since I got my first version (3.0b) and add a star for every version since. Double that now that the IIIc screen problems are fixed. This is a "buy before you try" to save you having to come back later to pay the tiny shareware fee. Fantastic program with fantastic support. (Sorry about the one star Daniel, but you must be sick of seeing five stars!)

I'd give it 6 stars. Awesome capability to ramp up the speed. I had one problem with the IIIc screen on scrolling (for just a couple programs) --- which the author hammered away at extremely quickly until he got it working. No problems in sight --- afterburners on at full tilt. You should buy this program!!!!!

I thought it would be just another hipe, but I tell you. It works awsome. My hobby is astronomy and I teach it to the boyscouts for their merit badges. Well I have a prg and when it would initialize, it would take about 30 seconds to load. Now it loads in about 5sec or less. I does exactly what it claims to do. I haven't seen any problems with the speed effecting programs. Thanks.

If you are reading these reviews and have yet to purchase this program, stop reading, grab your credit card and buy it now. No delay in screen changes, completely stable when ran at the proper speed. I have mine set at Daniel's recommend setting and Benchmark gives me consistant readings of 280%, nothing higher or lower. Just 280%. If you have a PalmVx, check if you have a memory problem on Palm's website. If you do, the software problem helps to stop the crashes, but does not really fix the problem. With the software patch, I was only getting readings of around 261%, with my replacement Palm, 280%. You do the math, these is an excellent program. Thanks Daniel for making the price so resonable. Keep up the good work.

FLAWLESS on Palm Vx OS 3.3. AvantGo, DateBk4, FitalyStamp, StarPilot, SimCity, PeanutReader all work perfectly. Very stable at benchmark 272. Benchmark 181 without even accelerating clock (0 wait states+ Fast Mpx). Lives happily with fairly diverse collection of other hacks. Transitions between accelerated apps and decelerated (doc reader) apps very smooth. Buy the shareware version! Not only is it the right thing to do; registered version has important features not present in trial version, most importantly (for thoes of us w/o keyboards) option to notify silently of clock speed changes (no more *&%$# beeps).

I tried it on my Palm IIIc. 286% in benchmark against a normal IIIx says it all. That's for the 4 stars. BUT, some applications cannot handle more then Norm speed: Avantgo MemoPlus TodoPlus Secret!2 and some games. All these suffer on scrolling, only some pixels at the border are scrolled. Sometime the Launcher is still displayed when starting an application. And another BUT is gamespeed, Atom Smash just gets to fast :)

This hack does them all anyways (BTW, it performs as well as NoWaitZ, the guy must've missed an option) And support couldn't have been better. Two thumbs up!

Tried it out for a couple of weeks, then bought 3.0k. Very nice program that does just what it says. I get 277% in Benchmark on my Palm Vx, OS 3.3, with my Afterburner settings, compared to 183% w/CruiseControl. Searches and program loads (esp. AvantGo) are especially noticable as faster, as well as screen refreshes. No problems with hack compatibility when Afterburner is loaded first per the instructions, and battery drain isn't significantly worse than usual. Thanks for a great product well worth the money :-)

If you really, really want to burn up your batteries faster with higher clock speeds, then this product is more than adequate for the purpose. However, I much prefer NoWaitZ to get my speed improvements by all those means other than upping the clock speed, and NoWaitZ beats Afterburner 3.0j in this department. Using Benchmark I get 197% on my Palm Vx with NoWaitZ, but only 182% with Afterburner. Similarly, NoWaitZ gives 160 PALMMARKS on PocketMark; Afterburner - 152. Further, NoWaitZ is only 1K in size. The other reason I would want to use Afterburner is to REDUCE the clock speed when the battery is low, but since it is not compatible with NoWaitZ, I don't use it.

Clearly, here is an author interested in having the best product for its purpose!!! Unfortunately for me, I find that there are various kinds of screen problems and crashes that occur on my PalmIIIc when it is running, even when I try lower speeds like 24 MHz and no other hacks. So, once he gets to a version that is happier on a PalmIIIc, I'll certainly register it.

I have tried other accelerators with my old Palm Professional (running OS 3.3 on a TRG 8Mb memory card) but with little success. I tried Afterburner II but it stopped working with OS 3.3 so I was pleased to see Daniel Wee had taken it upon himself to work on this performance utility. I first tried 3.0b but this caused my Pilot to crash badly. I contacted Daniel and he replied immediately to tell me that it wasn't compatible with EZ chips but he was working on it. By version 3.0g non-EZ chips were catered for and I'm now running 3.0h without a problem (however do disable all hacks before enabling Afterburner or you may get memory errors). At 23Mhz I'm getting a Benchmark of 129% (up from 91%) - that is Palm Vx performance. At 29Mhz, Benchmark shows 156%. How far do you push it? Thank you Mr Wee for a marvellous piece of software and keep up the good work.

I wrote a 4-star but critical review of an earlier version of AfterBurner, but this latest update (3.0g) is tip-top. After experimenting with every possible setting, I ended up with a Benchmark rating of 289% at 29mhz. Hats off to Mr. Wee for addressing the issues everyone raised. I would still like to see the IR issue worked on, since I have to speed things down to get reliable beaming (24, sometimes 26mhz) and I see others saying the same thing. I was, however impressed that the keyboard functionality is fine now. No problems whatsoever using the Stowaway... Even with that, I heartily recommend paying the 8 bucks. I opened my email today to find a copy of the latest release waiting for me...that's great service by a software author! If you're looking for more speed, this is the way to get it.

I give this only four stars because I have had mixed results here. While things are markedly faster, the stability of my Visor drops off remarkably with Afterburner. Often, I get memory errors when trying to OK the "Speeds" section that result in soft resets.
Lastly, it does NOT live well with SwitchHack. I have to pick one or the other. I have done the whole "disable all hacks and re-enable one by one" and the culprits are Afterburner and SwitchHack. Which one is the problem? I don't know.
The upside? Benchmark says 234% speed gain at 32 Mhz. Launcher III FLIES, and AvantGo loads pages so fast as to be almost instantaneous. I guess the trick is to know when to use it and when to disable it.
I'm keeping it, and I will pay for it, but I'd like to see more development, especially in how nice Afterburner plays nice with other hacks...

If you want to keep using EvPlugBase instead of HackMaster, you can. Just keep HackMaster installed but don't enable any hacks - you can use it to configure them and EvPlugBase to run them

This hack is great! I've been able to boost my IIIc to 29 Mhz. Everything still works fine even up to 32 Mhz but doesn't give me any added performance (according to the Benchmark utility) so I'm going to stick to 29 Mhz. I now have my device working at 276-280% which is twice the normal speed (Benchmark used to indicate a relative performance of 138%). To the previous reviewers who experienced data loss: the docs with this hack clearly indicate that you use it at your own risk and that overclocking your device is not a supported feature by Palm. Furthermore, it takes nothing more than a little common sense to make sure that you have an up-to-date backup of your device's contents before you start using a utility like this. So basically, the worst that can happen (provided you don't end up to be the first one suffering from hardware damage) is having to restore your device, which is a breeze with the "push hotsync button and have a coffee" type of procedure that BackupBuddy offers. In other words: quit whining, you knew what you were letting yourself into. If you make the necessary preparations, this tool gives you a serious opportunity to dramatically increase your device's performance.

So far, on my IIIx with the 8m xtra xtra, I've run it at 32 (just to see how it'll do.) Had no problems, including display, even when I disabled NoStreakHack and set the LClk/2 to "never".
