This was one of the very first apps that I put on my Zire 72. Since then I've tried lots of others but end up deleting them and just using Big Clock. It has worked perfectly. However, I too would like to see a new updated version, just to see how much better it can get. Nothing else comes close!

This HAD been a great application, but note the date of the last update. It has been four years since this application was updated. Don't expect any tweakings for any problems with new devices.

One of the best programs ever. Two cons tho:
1. Would give 5 stars if it could use the higher resolutions of modern palms. I have a Tungsten E and while working perfectly it looks really bad. If it could just use highres fonts (themes) it'd be perfect
2. We need a snooze button! I planned on using that to wake up, but I'll finally just revert to the build-in alarm because I love to just push snooze and be done with it for 5 mins.

I have used BigClock since my first Palm - 3 Palm's ago, and loved it as the most useful app on the handheld. Unfortunately, it doesn't run well on my new T5...every time I use the timer, I get an error, and the alarm never goes off until I clear the error. A real shame.
Frank J Kime JR wrote at 02/17/2005
After trying a number of freeware clock applications, BigClock is the only one which worked perfectly with the Samsung i500/Palm OS 4.1 Sprint offering. It took a minute or two to understand how to change the alarm settings (click on the top of the number to advance, bottom to decrement.) Keeps running/active through battery changes, power cycles with no hitch.
Though the ring tones are simple, the snooze feature and way it works with the touch screen well makes up for it. Weekday alarm feature keeps from being disturbed on the weekends, and I have used this for months on the road as a primary alarm.
Awesome way to time in the new year! Thanks bro...

Great program until i upgraded to a treo 650. The alarm doesn't work when the phone is locked, and clicking on the preferences button on the treo resets the unit everytime. Too bad, one of the most useful apps on my palms past.....
I too used BigClock all the time and was sad when I got my T3 and it didn't function correctly. However, I did find 9.95 Clock which is the exact same thing as BigClock! Well, it costs 9.95 of course, but well worth it. This clock is still as versatile as ever. So if you are still looking for BigClock for 5.0 or higher then head on over to 9.95 Clock. Because I think you will be waiting a loooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnngggggg time for an updated freeware BigClock.

I'm moving to MegaClock. I can't wait for an update. (Can't blame the programmer too much, since this is "freeware" and there is no incentive for him to update this formerly excellent product.)

I've been using this as an alarm clock on my last 3 or 4 Palm units, and its customizable alarms are great for making sure I don't get too used to a given alarm sound and fail to wake up... (: One tweak I'd like would to be to fix the way, after an alarm has sounded, that the hi-res screen underneath (of the app I'd been using before going to bed) is displayed in illegible low-res blocks on my Clie NR70 (and wife's Clie 750c). Any screen refresh will immediately fix it so it's just cosmetic, but it'd be nice to get that fixed. One star off for that; otherwise it's great!

I have been using this program on three generations of Palm going back almost six years and highly recommend it. It has a large and useful display that is readable under the most adverse ligting conditions. There are several display options for time, alarms, timers, and world time in 4 user defined cities, and it is extremely useful and reliable as alarm clock (where you can 'compose' your own tunes. It is very easy to navigate using your fingers (e.g. when in bed) and given the large display of characters, you do not have to fetch your eyeglasses each time you want to use it. The only feature I could not figure out is how to make the world time feature properly adjust as you change time zones, and each time have to reset it manually if I have need for it. Highly recommended if you need a good clock and these features.
Albert Omahen wrote at 10/25/2002
Very good program, kudos for making it simple yet very useful. If you like to use your palm as a deskclock, this is alot better than the tiny numbered default clock. not to mention, multiple alarms! I would give this app 5 stars, but I would like to see it support the vibrate and led features on the m500 series.

Every day, I wake up to a customized alarm that I was able to configure myself with this freeware. I use the timer for cooking and taking quick naps! This clock has more features than I'll ever need.
Big Clock is the only time keeper I have used for the past couple years. I have tried some others, but nothing is as nice IMO.

I've been using BigClock for 3 years now. Simply put, it's the best clock software out there. It's easy to use, highly customizable, and powerful. I even use it as my alarm clock in the morning.
My only criticizms are the following:
- It needs support for Sony Clie Hi-Res.
- Upon an initial installation, the alarm will fail to sound unless you manually make it go off (like in the timer) first. After that it works great.
Overall, a great piece of software. Keep up the good work.

Although the functionality was great, after installing BigClock, my Palm (Palm 5) would occaisonally get into a state where it would become unusable slow. It would generally recover from this after a few resets, but it was amazingly annoying. As far as I know, my Palm met the minimum requirements. After removing BigClock, the problem went away. Becuase of this, I have to lower the rating.
Alessandro Di Sciascio wrote at 04/08/2002
This software deserves an "excellent" rating for all it's other features, and if I was looking for an international clock, stopwatch etc. I'd probably rate it as much.

However, I was primarily interested in using BigClock as an alarm clock... I set up 4 alarms about 5 minutes apart at my wake up time.

When I don't acknowledge each alarm before the next goes off my palm crashes requiring a soft-reset.

No data loss, fortunatelly, but a big dissappointment.

This is on a Palm Vx running OS 3.5

By the way, I came up with the fair rating by averaging the "excellent" rating the app deserves for every other feature with the "unacceptable" rating I have to give it for the resets.

Exclellent Application by far!! I installed it on my Samsung i300 PalmPhone, OS v3.5.2.
There seems to be a bug with the alarm section in the app when used with or without the snooze feature.
It would work sometimes and most of the time, either in the first or second snooze alert, it would lock up my palmphone. No other choice other than to do a soft reset.
I really like this app and would like to keep using it as my primary alarm clock but it just hangs my unit and defeats it purpose.
I guess this app would be put on hold for me until this bug is fixed on the i300's.

I have used this program for about 6 months. I love it. My wife and I travel quite a bit. We'll be out having dinner and I'll ask her what time she wants to get up in the morning. I'll pull out my Visor (which I carry in my back pocket) and set the alarms some for the time she suggests which is always too early and one for 15 minutes and then 30 minutes later <g>). She always scrambles to set the hotel room clock radio or call for a wakeup call and I just smile...she never trusts this thing and it WORKS FLAWLESSLY!. It is a lot simpler to set than those hotel room clock radios!
We recently flew to Hawaii...long flights. I listened for the pilot to tell us how long it would take to fly from takeoff to landing and set the countdown feature. Everytime I wanted to know how much longer we had I just looked. BTW, even on 9 hour flights, pilots are off on flight time by 6 minutes <g>. Got to be the tailwind because my BigClock is right on!
I go to many hockey games and between periods will set the countdown feature so I know how much time is left in intermission.
I also do not wear a watch anymore. i usually use my cell phone to check time but if it does not have service I whip out old the reliable Visor and there is old reliable BigClock...
I know...very simple..but very functional and useful.
This program is free, fun, functional, and I love it. THANKS.

This program is so good that I understand 3Com has bundled it with the new m100. Among its many uses: When my travel alarm gave up its ghost, I simply didn't replace it. BigClock works perfectly in that capacity, especially since I can program in my own snooze alarm by setting the two alarms five minutes apart. Jens deserves the highest praise. Hi
Short note on the "easy local time" change. This is a bug that did sneak into V2.7. It is already fixed for V2.8 which will feature color support, label history and some other improvements.
I know of the "Battery Level Hack" problem, and as far as i know there is a newer version of it (a bit different name) that fixes the problem.
Jens
P.S.: Thanks to all who gave BigClock a 5 Star rating!

I upgraded from v2.5 and all the new features and bug fixes seem right on target. Mr. Rupp does an incredible service to Palm users. However, I have to agree with Glenn Fink on the point that it is now too easy to reset local time on your Palm with BigClock 2.7. I think a simple "locking" option like you have used in the past could be an improvement. I have one minor incompatibility to report as well. Battery Level Hack v1.2 causes the BigClock calendar display's Thursday column digits to be transmuted into alien looking characters I did not know existed! Has anyone else noticed that? Other than these minor glitches I still have BigClock assigned to my to do list button.
Glenn Fink wrote at 08/06/2000
BigClock works well, but I found it was too easy to accidentally set your Palm's local time. Also the tapping interface for setting a clock is less intuitive than a keypad or grafitti interface.

The layout and use is very functional. I like the design so that you can use your fingers to activate the buttons onscrean and not have to yank out the stylus every time you want to use it. However, unless it's just me, I have set several alarms and I have watched the time roll by on more than one occasion and the alarm did not kick off. It also did not work when the pilot was off. It would chirp away when I turned it on but that didn't serve much of a purpose for me.

The most used app on my Palm. My default app when the palm is in the craddle and I end up with the best desk clock in the company :-)
So good infact that replaced my ToDo button after using it for just a day.

Big Clock has been a "standard application" for the palm for a long time, a program you would expect as a part of the operating system of an organizer.
The screen redraw after alarm - bug of the last version has now been fixed.
Everything seems to work fine now.
Only the hour indicator of the analog clock still makes a big jump to the next hour exactly at XX:00:00 which is a bit confusing during the last few minutes of the hour (if it,s 11:55 you think it's 10:55).
I prefer the digital face, anyway.

First and LAST program I need to find to exactly what I want! Thank you for an excellent alarm - I need to take pills every day and this is the only good program (AND FREE) one I could find!! Thank you for the timer - I hate when I burn my food. And the super-large clock makes it beautiful!! Thanks again for making my life easier!

Here are some Alarms Ideas:
Avoid getting a parking ticket when parked at the meter. Repark the car for Alternate Side or the street parking(NYC - USA!), otherwise pay a $50 ticket. Obviously... getting up in the morning. If you get too sleepy at night and forget to brush and floss, here is your reminder. Keep your teeth longer. If you only can spend short time at a store etc, the alarm will remind you when it's time to leave. Never miss a TV or Radio show, train, flight, boat, school bus, bank, cleaners, etc.

Perfect in the kitchen. No more guessing when spaghetti is done(12min for me, if puts it into boiling water). Timing phone calls, lessons, dog walks, running, you name it!!! I just wish IIIx itself had a louder alarm. Free?!!! A must have!
The author is definitely on a LOVE THY NEIGHBOR MISSION!!!
God Bless YOU, Jens Rupp!!!

I love BigClock. I believe it is the most used program on my Visor. I have no copmplaints but would like to offer a suggestion. The Innopak vibrating alarm was recently introduced. Is there anyway to redirect BigClock alarms to the vibrating alarm. Thanks and continue to make a great product!

I have been using BigClock for a long time now on my Palm Pilot 5000 (yes there are still some out there!). It works fabulously and keeps getting better with each new release. I will be getting a Palm Vx shortly and this is definitely one program I will be keeping. Great to see freeware still happening in the Palm world.

Great Launcher! I can now replace a few other utilities with this 200k program. The only problem I find is it take some time to launch and switch between programs (have already disable "Dynamic windows" and I am using a Vx). Please speed up launching the launcher. (Pun not-intended):>

I usually don't feel the need to write a review, but BigClock is definitely a very good program. I use it regularly for board games, taking pulse, adding fish to my tank, and anything that needs short timing. Excellent program, my compliments to the developer. God bless you.

I have been using a version of Big Clock since I first got into Palm computing around 2 years ago, based on the recommendation of a friend. It is the ONLY application that I continually check for upgrades on, just so that I don't miss out on anything that is better than the best. Big Clock is a brilliant piece of kit and a must have on my palm. TEN STARS !!
Mark Steele wrote at 04/09/2000

The only request I have is to build in the option to disable the auto shut off when timing events. Possibility for the next release?????

Jens, thank you so much for making what may be one of the most useful freeware Palm apps around. What makes it particularly useful is the ease of the user interface--reminds me a bit of something I might find on my old Newton MessagePad 2100. Thanks again!

Good, but too complicated for a watch.
Too much buttons to press.
You should make a down version with less clocks, less alarms and a lot less buttons.

Add me to all the others praising BigClock. It was the first program I reinstalled when I upgraded to a Palm V. It's easy on my middle-aged eyes and has a cute name (my kids are always asking, "What does BigClock say?") Assign BigClock to the memo pad button and throw away your watch.

BigClock is the WINNER.

I am an amateur pilot and we used my Palm as a chronometer at the national air rally championship. In air rally timing is everything. You declare the timing of each leg in advance, and you have to elapse each leg on time, every second counts. My navigator used BIGCLOCK and we are the winner doing 7 seconds better than the second best. Thank you guys :)

I have been using Big Clock in its various releases for over a year now, and it is without doubt the very best of what is available for the 'III. I have beta tested a few other time products, but keep coming back to this one for its numerous brilliant features. It is one of the few apps that I keep backed up to floppy and carry with me incase I crash my 'III and have to reset the hard way. Thanks Bill - nothing short of Brilliant !!! I'd give it more stars if I was able to.

One of two must-haves for the Palm
(the other is DateBk3).
I no longer carry a watch. Having a display
this large makes it easy to see the time.
I also use the world time when I travel.
The fact that it is FREE is unbelievably
generous: the quality, design and
utility of this clock beats Rolex.
I have it launched via the right-most button
since I use it more than MemoPad.

I registered the font changer ($10) just so Mr. Rupp would get some dough for his work. This freeware app blows the doors off of everything else for the Palm, including the ones wanting real $$ up front. The layout architecture lets you have it your way - if you want a countdown timer on every page you can have it. Great stuff!
Jeff Burkholder wrote at 08/27/1999
As a commercial photographer, I have always wanted a time that can do dual times. I have to count down multiple times for polariods all the time. Now, I just wish BigClock had 4 countdown timers in it. I just had a shoot where I did 5 polaroids and sure could use 90 seconds 4 times. Ask for the world and sometimes you get Ethiopia. Great software!!

A very, very good clock/timer/alarm. A simple but customizable interface and several alarm options which I use to the full extent, as I have to wake up at different times during the week.
I especially like the way it combines timer and stopwatch into the same screen, simply by letting the user select whether to let the clock count up or down. A very good Palm-like solution.
Screens could be a little more sexy to look at, for instance by using a nicer typeface. But all in all, one of my favorite Palm apps.
Quasar * wrote at 03/24/1999
Big Clock can be a useful tool to the Pilot user if he or she needs a utility that can sound multiple alarms and is in need of a good countdown/countup timer.
The interface is clean and simple and the various modes of adjustment for the timers, alarms and dual time zones are easy to use.
But this is not a program for everyone. As it stands, most users will probably be already using their DateBook app for the alarm feature. Big Clock can be a useful tool for those of you who need to be reminded daily of certain timed events (bathroom breaks, feeding your Iquana, changing your underwear?). The countdown timer is great for keeping track of the parking meter time.
The only "flaw" in this program is the lack of a world time database in which you might have been able to select the second time zone featured on the display. Also, it would have been nice to have been able to lable the second time zone instead of having it read the generic "world time".
All in all, a simple but effective clock/alarm program.
Francis Lo wrote at 03/22/1999
Since its first release of v1.x, BigClock is still the best free clock/timer program - with features that can other paid sharewares feel embarrassed.
The user has a lot of freedom in customising the layout of virtually everything on each page, even the alarm sounds can be customised. Very cool and convenient way of setting time and alarms, plus the flexibility to define multiple time in big digits.
Despite all these features, the software maintains a small footprint by avoid the massive data for auto DST, or country time zone settings ( but users normally knows the setting themselves for those countries / cities they want to set ). It even work in ROM ! Works well with Screecher too ( apart from Tale Light).
One should try the font changer for added USD10 - this will patch the program with whatever fonts you got on the windows, and show your selected fonts on your Palm !! And you can change the fonts over and over again by patching through the windows font changer program !! Good fun.
This is really great piece of freeware. Good work.
BigClock is a free clock with alarm, worldtime and timer/stopwatch. Everything is displayed with large numbers. The timer works while the pilot is turned off. Four different alarm types. Can display in 12 or 24h format. Layout and sounds completly user configurable.
