I am a long-time registered user of FindHack and have used it on several PalmOS devices (a Sony Clie and a Palm Tungsten 3 leap to mind as two of them) with absolutely no problems. I've been very happy with it. However, I am rating it "fair" because it crashes my new Palm TX for no discernible reason when I run a find on the developer-defined "all applications." Strangely, when I create an application set called "all apps" and choose to include every application on the list in that set, and then run a find on that application set, it works fine. So, I am left wondering what FindHack does when searching the developer-defined "all applications" set, that it does not do when searching the user-defined "all applications" set! I attempted to contact the developer but have not heard from him yet. If I do, I will update this review with more information. In the meantime, this is an annoying bug, and is the reason for my not giving the product an "excellent" rating.

Been using it for over a year on my Palm T3 and it always works well. To raise my rating from good to excellent, I'm hoping for a new version with 2 improvements:
1) to be able to enter a longer search; 2) to be able to restrict the search within category and within application and not just within application. I would gladly pay $20 for a new version with these features.
For enhancement 1, the search string is currently so short that I can never use more than 2 words for a boolean search. For enhancement 2, I have categories for books, movies and music as well as several technical categories. The search results would be much more useful if the search could be restricted to a single category.
Do I recommend it, absolutely.

The program(4.07) doesn't work on my Cingular TREO 650 which was purchased in 8/2005 and has the latest ROM updates. I believe the latest ROM updates are affecting FindHack's operation. After performing the suggested trouble shooting tips I tried contacting the developer. So far he has not responded.
An earlier version worked very well on my Handspring Visor.

This AppLock program is very fast and very stable on my T3. I donot have to wait at all even though it have to scan through thousands of entries in my Memo database. And the result of the Find is very comprehensive and left nothing else to be desired. I uses this program numerous times aday and everyday during my work . It remembers the last 30 "Find" requests which is very time saving and useful feature. I have used many other Find programs in the past, and I found this one to be the best. Go get it. Full stop.

FindHack is the best replacement for the Palm find that I've tried. Although it's interface looks simple (and is easy to use) it hides all the features that I need to make it useful every day. First, it is FAST. It's easier to look up a memo with FindHack than it is to go to the application and scroll through the index. Second, it has all the normal features like application lists and favorites, plus it allows searches within a text document. So if you have a 1000 word memo it will find the next instance of your search item inside that memo. Third, it has the option to search the "current application". This is great! I don't have to have the application predefined, I just go to the app and search there. I've found it works well with Shadow and with Daynotez.
It is well worth the cost. I only wish I had bought it earlier.

Excellent program. The built in find is so limited as to be next to useless. On the other hand this app has a wide range of search options.
Other reviews ask suggest it should be cheaper. I haven't even started to configure the various features but even at it's simplest it is worth the money.
I used to get so frustrated when looking up a contact in the contacts database. I would enter the start of a name only to find that the list was being displayed in Company order, or I would know the first name but not the Last name. All very difficult ways to search with the inbuilt tools.
With this great hack that is all in the past now. I just enter what I have and let FindHack show me all the matching items in that app only.

Ah, I am SO happy to see that this works on OS 5!!! I've used this program for years and am glad to have registered it so long ago! It has saved me so much aggravation when searching for something!! When I changed to a new palm, it drove me crazy to not be able to search the current application only! Ah, what relief to get that ability back!! Thanks!!

Really nice program. Wish it were $5 or less- I'd buy it and recommend it to everyone I know with a Palm.
But $15 is quite a stretch. Gotta take a star away for the price for this good, yet pretty limited utility.

Top application! I have Beyond Contacts on my Zire 71 and the default Find application was always looking for the Calendar first than the Contacts so I had to wait some minutes just to get a phone number, this was really making me thinking of going back to my old Palm Professional... but FindHack changed my perspective! It´s small, fast, easy to use and very well implemented! Just like the first Palm software!

I downloaded the program to try it out and like the enhancements that it has over my Palm Tungsten E's built-in find utlity. My only problem with Findhack though is that if the data you are searching for happens to reside on your SD card, then you won't get any hits unless this is a problem with MobileDB. I have a little more testing to do to verify that, but if I search for data that is in a MobileDB database that is on the card, I get no hits. When I search for data that is in a MobileDB database that resides in my Palm's main memory, I get results back. That is my only complaint as I am starting to store more and more data on my SD card as to save the RAM on my Palm. This improvement would allow me to give the application 5 starts.

Just a follow up note on the problem I posted below. It appears as though the problem may reside with a beta version of Bonsai that I have been using. This has yet to be determined with any certainty. However, I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt to this excellent developer who is extremely eager to resolve any issues that may be associated with Findhack. Thank you Florent for your willingness and eagerness to solve this problem and your quick responses to my concerns.

After I contacted Florent about the problems that I was having with FindHack 3.8 with TealMaster on a Tungsten T, he e-mailed me the URL for the FindHack 4.0 beta. I have now used the beta, the 4.01 release and have just loaded the 4.02 release. I haven't had any trouble at all with the application. I use it several times each day without a problem. Florent, once again thank you for a great product.

This program has alot of potential, if only it would work well. Unfortunately, it is not ready for prime time. It works on my Tungsten only 50 to 60 percent of the time, the other 50 to 40 percent it causes crashes and a reboot. Also, I constantly get a message indicating that I have to do a new search as the data has changed: it has not changed and I am doing new searches, yet I still get that message. I sure hope that the developer is working hard on upgrades as the 10 bucks I paid will be a waste of money.

Just a note regarding Lawrence Lam's mention below regarding this hack not working with Mobile DB. On my Sony OS4.1 SonyHiRes T625, I ended up removing Mobile DB, from my RAM because everytime I did a global search with the built in search, no matter what Mobile DB's settings were, it crashed. Even when Mobile DB was set not to search, my Sony crashed when using biult in search. Eventually I chose against their product, because of that bug, and because it isn't high res. I don't know if the crashes only happen in Sony and/or 4.1 PDA's. But this same Mobile DB bug may have also caused this advanced version of the same search function. Not the Hack.
Andy Glick wrote at 03/24/2003
Unfortunately I have to retract some of the claims that I made earlier. It is true that TealMaster enables FindHack to work, and Findhack still finds references in the various databases, but it does crash the device when I tap on an entry. I'm going to report the problem and see if it will be fixed.
Fred Danowski wrote at 01/11/2003
FindHack's ability to limit searches to preselected programs in global find mode is a great feature, and as others have said, the wildcards are excellent for finding that elusive data that you've been loooking for. WORTH EVERY PENNY!
Brette Blatchley wrote at 02/17/2002
I consider FindHack to be a necessary addition to my Palm. It Just Works! But you know that from the other reviews - what I want to add is that the support from this developer is supperb! IT IS PROACTIVE. I have ofen been emailed a not by the developer that a new version is available that adds features are compatibility with additional hardware. This is great, especially since I can't get some of the developer's whose products I've *paid for* to give me the time of day (they seem to simply sit on their products and let problems lay). Anyway BUY THIS PRODUCT, it is well worth it!

Nice program. A note about the review below: the Palm program or hack has not yet been born which will add search to a program which does not support Global Find internally. For ebooks (doc format), try TakeNote! or MiniWrite, they both support Global Find, and therefore will work with this hack.
Duane Dougal wrote at 11/14/2001
Nice hack. The wildcards are a very useful feature. However, I haven't yet found a find hack/extension that will search through eBooks or other text files (*.pdb), and this one is no exception. Add that capability and it will deserve 5 stars.
Rock Roberge wrote at 07/05/2001
Outstanding! This hack works exactly as described, what a timesaver! Well worth the $10.
Andy Dowell wrote at 10/25/2000
Excellent tool! I also find one that is not that powerful, but cheaper and does not require HackMaster (which caused troubles on my TRG and I had to cut it): Beiks Find on PalmGear. Their tool costs only $5 and gives the most important part as well.
Richard Fowell wrote at 03/04/2000
Defitely an "essential" app, it gives the Palm "Find" command the functionality that Palm should have provided in the first place. The ability to search just the current or built-in apps, the wildcard capability, and the ability to find strings even in the middle of words are all key for me.
Paul McClure wrote at 12/08/1999
This is one hack i highly suggest to all plam users. It makes the built in find better and is quite cheap to regester.
Stephen Lee wrote at 11/15/1999
This hack beats the hell out of the standard Palm Search. What's great is the speed and the ability to seah in "All App", "Built-ins" or the Current App". The use of Wildcards is also a bonus! Makes things easier if you are like me with more than 6MB of data. Beats GlobalFind, another search hack but with limited features.
<BR><BR>
One bug though: Results keep showing a "^0" after every search! Also, there's no checkbox for Case Sensitive searches. But than, I'm asking for the sky!

An overall excellent replacement for the built-in find function. However, rather than German character, FindHack 2.8 will not find Chinese Character unless wildcard is checked.
Thomas McVoy wrote at 05/27/1999
Only problem that actually makes the standard Palm FIND a better tool....I preface communication notes with indiviuals with a CP for "Communication Plan". When I want to quickly find my CP's the Findhack brings up ANYTHING with a cp in it .
Stefan Schwingeler wrote at 05/18/1999
There is one serious bug in it: it does not look for german Umlauts (oau?) so one has to use a regexp "?.*" to find such a word.
Author is informed.
