I can not really give this program a rating. I can give myself zero stars for being to stupid to fiqure it out and see its worth. I only have one lifetime and I can't spend it trying to learn laptophack and pedit. Maybe someone translate the convoluted manuals so a mere mortal might understand.

********** (Ten Stars) LapTopHack is an incredible product that adds significant value to your palm device with or without a keyboard. It is extremely feature rich, constantly evolves to provide additional incremental value, and is supported by a refreshingly collaborative and wonderfully responsive developer. Don't be fooled by negative comments on this product. Take this product for a spin, read the documentation (some of the best I have ever seen), and try out the examples. Learn for yourself the value of this product, which I assure you is high.

I simply wish to point out a gross inaccuracy in Bob Devere's review from the 23rd of January. He states that "Laptop hack aims to replace all graffiti use on the palm with a variety of keyboard shortcuts." LapTopHack isn't a replacement for Graffiti input, but instead provides a wealth of useful tools, not only for editing text, but for controlling almost every aspect of your Palm OS handheld. Though LapTopHack truly shines for use with a portable keyboard, it still provides a host of useful features when the stylus is your only input tool. Most of LapTopHack's features are accessible from a popup menu, requiring absolutely no keyboard to take advantage of powerful features like scripting and to do creation.

For me, the most useful feature in LTH is the scripting ability. I automated about 50 of the things I do most often on my Palm, then assigned those scripts to be launch-able from wherever it is most convenient: 1) Keyboard keys, 2) FitalyStamp custom left-slides, 3) LTH button pages, which I have arranged like hierarchical menus. <BR> LTH gets used almost 100% of the time I'm using the Palm, with or without a keyboard. I can't imagine going back to the pre-LTH days!

I think that Mr. Devere in his review of LapTopHack missed the point entirely. On a handheld device that has no graqhical OS; that a mouse can not be hooked up to; and relies on the use of a stylus for imput, a program such as LapTopHack is very useful. Even when using the sylus with my Visor, calling LTH up and using it is faster in many situations than going through all the menus and such by poking the screen. And your hand doesn?t need to move from the graffiti area to pick things from the screen so it is much faster. With a keyboard it, of course, really shines. Not having to pick up your stylus and break your train of thought to do something with the screen is much faster and helps the work flow much smoother. As far as the commands being hard to learn, well, if you can learn to use a palm OS handheld you can learn the commands for LTH. And as for making your handheld as useful as a laptop for writing and text editing, just give it a try. You will be very surprised. With my Stowaway and Visor I can do anything with text that I can with my Laptop. But I can do it places that I couldn?t with my Laptop and those two are easier to carry to boot. To really be impressed use it with peditPro and you have a really powerful combination. Then there are all the other extras like the easier ?To Do? entry, the custom scripting, easier access to prefs, access to the editing power of peditPro in any app, just to name a very few. This is a must have for any serious hand held user.

I felt I _HAD_ to respond to the uninformed review by Mr. Bob Devere below. After a look at the manual, I, too, was doubtful that LTH would fulfill its promises---especially without a keyboard. Well, luckily I had faith and took the leap. LTH is _incredibly_ powerful and useful---even without a keyboard. But, I have to admit that the additional features associated with using a keyboard prompted me to buy a PPK/Stowaway keyboard for my Visor, and I've never looked back! I use my keyboard maybe 10% of the time (best for doing a lot of text entry), and I use LTH 100% of the time. Do yourself a favor: try LTH (and peditPro too!) and give it a real chance. Look through the manual several times. Try to _absorb_ all the usefulness---and put it to use in your _own_ context. Then it will dawn on you---maybe slowly---that this and peditPro are the most revolutionary, powerful, and useful software ever to hit the Palm OS handheld! Thanks for your product, Paul! --BruceM.

Contrary to what Bob Devere wrote in his review, LapTopHack is perhaps the most valuable program I have on my PalmPilot. I use a keyboard perhaps only 20% of the time, but LapTopHack's many features are tremendously valuable. The scripting ability, which enables me to automate many common tasks on my Palm, is itself worth the cost of the product. Perhaps Mr. Devere didn't try LTH long enough to discover the ways it can help Palm users. As for his arguments about GUIs, I work as a computer consultant and software developer -- on both Windows machines and several varieties of UNIX, all with GUIs -- and I find myself performing tasks with the keyboard FAR more often than I use the touchpad or mouse. Perhaps Mr. Devere's experiences make GUIs his preferred paradigm, and perhaps the ways he uses his Palm are simple enough not to benefit from LTH. That doesn't change the value of the product.

<small>Disclosure: I am the owner of the Peditors Forum, a mailing list for users of LapTopHack and other products by the same author; and I am also a friend of the author.</small> <p>Just a quick note to point out that the comments by Bob Devere (23-Jan-02) may be based on a superficial evaluation of the product. He focuses on some aspects of the LapTopHack user interface (the fact that it can be almost completely operated also with an external keyboard), but fails to mention its many features. One of the most advanced is <a href="http://www.osuweb.net/~pc/lth/man/LapTopHack_man.html#SCRIPTING"><em>scripting</em></a>.

The purpose of this review is to address the criticism of Bob Devere - that LTH is only useful with a keyboard. This is just plain incorrect! A few examples of features that are not keyboard specific: <BR> 1. App and pref launching. LTH brings a whole bunch of apps and all the preferences panels within a few strokes of anywhere.<BR> 2. ToDo creation. This feature allows you to quickly and easily create a ToDo entry using any text from within any application.<BR>3. pScripting. This feature allows you to automate almost any sequence of events on your Palm. <BR> 4. Magipad. An accessible anywhere store of boilerplate text, again especially useful when not using a keyboard.<BR> 5. Date selection. Rapid navigation through the date selection screen AND the ability to quickly move forward/backward by a specific number of days.<BR> The list could go on, but I hope I have made my point...

I don't use a keyboard with my Palm handheld most of the time and yet I find LapTopHack the most valuable 3rd party software I have installed on it. The ability to access practically all of interface functions through keyboard is only a small part of functionality LapTopHack adds to PalmOS. And even without using keyboard I find most of the time that graffitiing the LapTopHack commands is much faster than moving the stilus all around the screen (not to mention that that saves the screen from extra scratches). My most favorites features of LapTopHack are (in no particular order): menu navigation; pop-up list navigation; macros (scripting) - I save a LOT of time and efforts by having automated many repeated actions; powerful editing ability added to all text input in all applications; enlarged clipboard; scratch pad for keeping often used texts at hand; improved (MUCH) improved date selector (with embedded date calculator); improved help reader for all applications (with ability to search for a keyword in lengty help screen etc. etc. etc. The learning curve is steep for unprepared users, but it well worth it. The software is extremely stable and practically bug free. The author is very responsive and fixes the problems very, very fast. He is also listening to users' suggestions and constantly improves the software. Highly recommended.

Laptop hack aims to replace all graffiti use on the palm with a variety of keyboard shortcuts. This supposedly makes your palm as useful as a laptop. This approach is deeply flawed, since most laptop users actually use a graphical OS with a mouse or touchpad. So what do we have? Well, without a keyboard LTH is completely pointless (despite the protests of the faithful), and with a keyboard? Well, if learning a bunch of complex shortcuts to avoid picking up your stylus is your cup of tea, then go ahead.

If you have a keyboard for your Palm, get this hack. It is simply the Best! The onl<BR>y complain I have is that the author adds TOO MANY features into this hack (~250k, and to pEdit as well. It's starting to be a BLOATWARE... Most of the features are being used by "expert" Palmers.

I looked at this hack several times and I had no idea what I could possibly need this for until I decided to try it out and compare it to what my portable keyboard did with my Palm before this hack and what it did after. It is unbelievable what a difference it made. With the pointer now a part of this program, I have yet to use my stylus with the keyboard. If you use a keyboard with your Palm, buy this hack!

I firmly believe that superlatives are terribl overused in this country. If everyone is "the best," how do you refer to Lance Armstrong, or others in that class? With that as pre-amble, this software, and its creator, Paul Nevai, are the best thing to happen to the Palm OS. I'm not sure there is a second best. You think we are all being paid by Paul to about on him? Just try the app, you'll understand. If you use a keyboard, LTH is the most useful app around because it dramatically improves the usefulness of everything else on your palm. Have a favorite app? This will make it better. If you don't use a keyboard, this utility still improves the palm. The only hard part about this app, and others by Paul, is having to deal with a new and improved version every 48 hours.

If you use a Palm or any handheld running the Palm operating system, then you NEED LapTop Hack and pedit. With both installed on my TRGpro, I haven't had the need to even look at my big, bulky laptop in years. pedit offers the ability to work with MemoPad entries, and adds capabilities and features that can't be poured on about in a small review. Simply stated, LapTop Hack offers the ability to completely control your Palm from any of the portable keyboards on the market without having to use a stylus. But, don't think it's a useless upgrade if you don't have a keyboard. LapTop Hack greatly improves the Palm User Interface with or without a keyboard. Advanced users can write scripts to customize Palm commands. Truely an amazing piece of software. By far, the best part of the deal, is that you get a product from Paul Nevai.... Paul is truely behind his product every step of the way. There simply aren't enough stars at PalmGear to do these two pieces of software AND their developer (couldn't help it Paul) justice!!!!!!

Please see my review about Pedit Pro. For true power, you need them both. Laptop hack is incredibly powerful even if you don't have an external keyboard. I can't begin to list all the functions that come with this program. It's very stable and, in combination with Pedit, gives you scripting capabilities that you won't believe. With an external keyboard, you will never again need to drag that heavy laptop with you. This is a great program and worth every penny.

LapTopHack is the most mind-bogglingly useful tool I have on my Palm handheld. Gradually, as Paul has added features to this amazing program, I've been able to do away with many of my other Hacks. LTH provides a grab-bag of useful features, and with a keyboard attached, it is truly indispensible. Virtually any function of your handheld, be it time display, backlight, date selection, or even setting system preferences, is available via a few short keystrokes. With the recent addition of the pointerSquare, you need never pull out your stylus again while using a keyboard. As if that weren't enough, when combined with peditPro, LapTopHack allows real power users the ability to script actions in any application, allowing automation of complex or repetetive tasks across the entire handheld. LapTopHack is an indispensible tool for anyone who is serious about getting the most out of a Palm handheld.

********** (This is my way of giving LapTopHack 10 stars.) If you are serious about using the PalmOS, you can't afford *not* to get this hack. It picks up where the PalmOS left off. With its scripting capability, LTH has revolutionized my ability to do things quickly and efficiently -- with or without a keyboard. If you can do it manually, LTH's scripting can automate it. If you have a Palm Portable or GoType keyboard, it gets even better with LTH's recently introduced Quick Script Activation. With just two keystrokes, you can start any script; the Palm customization possibilities are endless!

It's hard to describe what LapTopHack does specifically because it does so much (the manual is several KB in size if that's any indication). The only recommendation I can make is to install it and one of the pedits (I endorse peditPro personally), read the manuals, and see what you can do with it. There is a discussion forum on Yahoo!Groups (do a search for pedit from the Yahoo!Groups homepage) where there are many able-minded individuals (including the author) to help you through any questions, and the author is top-notch when it comes to support, updates, etc. of his products. I can't say enough about this product (or the author's responsiveness). I would give it twice as many stars if I could.

I have to amend my review... since I recently got pedit[Pro], LTH has easily DOUBLED in value (is that 8 stars now?). This is really one phenomenal toolkit. Instead of there being a "bite" taken out of it, perhaps I should have said there's a parking spot reserved for a Ferrari F40. To answer the potential user's questions: Yes, it is useful without a keyboard, and yes it is extremely useful without pedit, but if you get the set you will be thrilled and amazed what your palm can do. It seems like a big hack, but I'm sure you will be deleting three or four other hacks once you see what this will do. The only downside I can see is that this PGHQ page is not so up to date... check his web site for the absolute latest.

This is a one of a kind hack. It really unleashes the power of your keyboard. Even if I am without my keyboard, I find myself searching for the "real" way to do things instead of the LapTopHack accelerated way! Nice bonuses are adjusting the auto-off timer, a 32k clipboard and a battery/ram monitor. The only reason it lacks a star is that there is prominent space reserved for pedit, and lacks much of its potential without it. It's like a wonderful app with a bite taken out of it. If you have pedit already, my GOODNESS, what are you *thinking* being without LTH!!! If not, I still highly recommend trying it, it's well worth it.

I stumbled on LapTopHack (LTH) through Paul Nevai's pEdit when I found for the first time that I could finally enter graffiti with the keyboard on screen. I'm not sure if that was a glitch or my newbie status, but I wasn't able to replicate it but it did motivate me to find this hack whose usefulness has now expanded exponentially with the inclusion of peditHack. As I said, I'm a newbie to the Palm Universe and was impressed by its operating system but there were things I wanted to be able to do. With my original IIIe I wanted to know how much battery was left (LTH will do it), cut and paste more than small amounts of text (LTH will do it), and have a clipboard available and addable to across applications (LTH will do it). I know now that I can get different Hacks to do some or all of these things, but I was and still am impressed by the flexibility and the access to so many different operations from the one Hack, and in most case, the one screen - keyboard access, power on and off and adjustable, menu access, security, button preferences, peditHack with its text editing functions and so much more - and all only a graffiti stroke away. And just when I thought it couldn't get any better I BOUGHT A KEYBOARD and all of these features (and more) are now available at the touch of a key so I don't have to interrupt my typing to pick up and use the stylus to access them. Heaven. I have no trouble recommending Palm generally, and when I'm giving anyone the "you need a Palm" talk, I also show them Hacks, and LTH is at the top of the list.

Extremely useful program. LapTopHack is designed primarily as a way of addressing most of the Palm's menus and controls from a detachable keyboard. With LapTopHack, detachable keyboard users have much less of a need to take their hands off the keyboard, grab the stylus, and poke at a menu or control on the screen. You can do most of what you need to do from the keyboard. It also works with Graffiti, or with a keyboard emulator like FitalyStamp or KeyBoardHack. LapTopHack also has some other features, including editPad, a built-in, powerful text editor which you can use to edit any Palm text field, including note attachments. Basically, the way it works is when you have a text field selected and invoke this feature called editPad, LapTopHack instantly copies all the text from that field into the clipboard, opens up this powerful little text editor, and pastes all the text from the clipboard to the text editor. When you close the text editor, LapTopHack does the same operation in reverse. Another handy feature is that it extends the size of the clipboard from the Palm 1,000-character limit to up to 32K. P.S. I am not, to my knowledge, related to the other Wagner reviewing this product.

The questions before us: Is LapTopHack worthwhile for a Visor/Palm/Etc user with a keyboard? Most definately yes. Is LTH worthwhile without the keyboard? Yes--to a lesser extent, of course, but still yes. There are just so many great features it would be hard to name all the ones I find so vital to my usage now. The main fact is that I can move much more quickly now -- no stopping to pick up the stylus except in rare instances. And even when not using the keyboard, the control panel for LTH gives me access to a variety of features very quickly. Much more than just F for Find, as an earlier reviewer seems to assert. A couple of taps, and I can modify the sound level. Or copy everything in a field to the clipboard. Some of the other really powerful features that make LTH invaluable: I can modify the auto-off feature to any amount I want, from 1 second to never or anywhere in between (since the extremes themselves aren't all that useful, of course). And the ability to have the clipboard be up to 32K. Add in peditHack, peditPad, and magiPad (advanced text editing features, courtesy of the pedit text editor by the same programmer), and you can use a myriad of features to manipulate text (see pedit for a further description of these). I have few programs as useful to me in everything from my day to day use of my Visor, to my novel and nonfiction writing. It's a must have!

LapTopHack (LTH) is the only hack (or program) on both Palm devices I use. On my Vx (business use), the ability LTH provides to use a keyboard for editing and composing documents/memos has allowed me to stop carrying my laptop to meetings and offsite conferences. On my TRGPro (research use), the consistent editing capabilities introduced into all my data gathering efforts by the included pEditHack/editPad/MagiPad has resulted in directing my efforts at collecting data rather than at entering it. LTH has such a wide range of abilities that even though you will probably never use all of the features available, there will certainly be many that you will find useful and necessary. Add to this a developer (Paul Nevai), who is the most responsive I have seen at answering questions, fixing bugs, and implementing new (asked-for) features, and you have a program that I believe is indispensible.

LapTopHack is a work-in-progress, but not because it's useless. In fact, it's already among the most useful programs one could learn, particularly if you use a keyboard. As promised, it brings much of a laptop's power to the Palm platform, without losing the Palm's advantages in portability and power consumption. Like any complex piece of software, LapTopHack does require some learning, but the user will find that the interface is always sensible, and very powerful. With peditHack, magiPadHack, and editHack added to the mix, I find that LapTopHack rivals the Palm keyboards themselves in value. However, its greatest asset is not a feature at all, but its author. Paul Nevai is the most responsive and involved software writer I've had the pleasure of communicating with, and I look forward to seeing what wonders he works with LapTopHack in the future.

Only truely imaginative programs can broaden the horizon of your Palm experience. LapTopHack is such a program.<BR> It adds a consistent interface to all of your editing needs and enables you to get rid of most of your hacks. Use it both with and without keyboard. It's good advice to read the manual and get the basic hang of it, before you press ESC F.....

Not quite as intuitive as one might hope for, BUT WELL WORTH the time and effort you may put into it. Practically every system function will now be under keyboard/graffiti control, which means 1) your keyboard time won't be spent fumbling with the stylus, and 2) during hand-held operation you won't waste stylus strokes (and eye-strain) on tiny targets and popup menus. AND everything is fair game for shortcuts! 75% of the LTH interface is so intuitive as to be obvious; another 10% requires only that you learn Paul's style in assigning names ("Xecurity" means "Security" with x as the hotkey). Then comes the last 15%, for which Paul really earns his money. You can rotate keyboard focus between buttons, popup menus, edit fields, etc. Your "organizer" just became a laptop, especially if you own a keyboard. You'll be so amazed that you'll WANT to read the manual. This is an amazing project by a talented programmer who REALLY does his homework. Think of LTH 2.xx as a system upgrade which works for every Palm OS version currently in circulation! Jerry Skelley

With LapTopHack and pEdit Pro, I can do all the text processing I need. For example, last week I took a deposition with nothing but my notes in pEdit Pro and added comments as I went along. I find this hack to be unbelieveably useful, and as always, the developer (Paul) is extremely responsive to questions, problems, suggestions, etc. Try it out! Is is a bit complex to learn EVERYTHING, but like with all of Paul's software, it is pretty intuitive, and you can access a "myriad" of functions with just a brief read of the manual. I give this application 3 stars because the software, while an excellent concept, is still work in progress. A "NA" rating actually might be more appropriate at this point. Knowing the author of the software, Paul Nevai, as I do (I use his PeditPro, the best Palm text editor) this will reach five stars rather quickly. The developer's LapTopHack concept is to make the external keyboard + Palm = laptop, as closely as possible. I use an external keyboard frequently and like the ability to use the keyboard as much as possible to activate Palm functions, check the time, battery useage, etc. Even in its present state of development, LapTopHack allows you to accomplish things with keyboard actions that require stylus strokes even when attached to an external keyboard. An example, hitting the ESC key (`)and then i on a keyboard puts you into the help information of an application with an 'i' (help)icon in the top right corner. Once in the help screen, further i keystrokes changes the font. This works, for example, in the details screen of the Datebk4 application. As I say, he is only part of the way there, but am confident he will achieve his ultimate goal.

Most of the actions may be performed by tapping application specific controls such as buttons, scroll bars, pick lists, check boxes, etc. Text, numbers and other symbols may be entered with Graffiti or external keyboards. <p>The problem is that users are forced to continuously move the pen from the bottom Graffiti area to the top application area of Palm's touch screen, and maybe also hitting keys on an external keyboard. All this slows down user input speed. <p>Paul's goal is to improve interaction performance and convenience by minimizing pen movement and widening the range of operations executable with external keyboards. This can be achieved by modifying the behavior of applications so that the commands usually performed by interacting with user interface controls in the application area can also be performed with Graffiti or external keyboard input. So, the user restricts pen movement to the Graffiti area or hand movement to the keyboard. <p>pedit's flexibility in accepting input not just by tapping application specific controls, but also from Graffiti or keyboards, is Paul's first step toward that goal. LapTopHack is the next step. <p>LapTopHack works with all Palm applications. It provides two main features for tip dialogs, i.e. the ones displayed when tapping the <em>i</em> icon in the upper right corner of application dialogs. The first feature is that the text of tip dialogs can be shown in various fonts, not just the usual bold one. The second LapTopHack feature is that it makes tip dialog controls -- e.g. the </em>Done</em> button and scroll arrows -- also accessible by Graffiti or external keyboard input, not just by directly tapping them. </p>The hack provides a few more commands not available in normal tip dialogs. It also has other features, such as enhanced functionality of the <em>FIND</em> SilkScreen button, commands for displaying the date/time and battery charge status, and more under development.
