Arguably the most "useful" piece of software for the palm avalable today. Unfortunately it does not play too well with button-impaired devices (Zire/Zire21), which I is understandable, yet rather dissappointing.

Ok, it's me again. Having upgraded to a Tungsten | E, I am sorely disappointed about the fact that this software isn't ARM native yet! However, I e-mailed Gambit Studios, and got a quick reply stating they are currently working on an ARM native version...wow imagine how fast that can go! Maybe it will support color GB? PLEASE?

Great concept but designed for older hardware. I have a Zire 71 and despite the 144Mhz processor it runs s-l-o-w. That's too bad. Even worse is all of the "booster" type programs only work on Dragonball CPU's. Hopefully, they will update the code for ARM soon?
PMC Contreras wrote at 09/30/2003
WOW! This app kicks! The best way to run this app is with the following:
1. Get "Fast CPU" to overclock - you can get up to 66 MHz, rather than AfterBurner's 54 MHz. Trust me, HUGE difference!
2. Put frame blit at every 2nd frame
3. Absolutely run Radical Emulation! IT TOTALLY HELPS!!!
GREAT JOB GAMBIT!!!

I purchased Liberty when it first came out, and am dumbfounded at the programming prowess of the developers and this amazing program. While Liberty has always been slower than the actual Game Boy for most games, it is still playable once you get used to it. Many games are playable at full speed or close with a little bit of overclocking. With this program, I have been able to play through lots of old games I never got to play, and on a handheld device! Kudos for an amazing achievement.

First of all I have to say this is probly the best software for Palm, all the games you need in 1! But there are some problems, like saying it supports hires, I have an NR70V and I have to check it off hires or else I get a small screen. The sound is just awful, please make a version that utilizes the new clie speakers. Roms on memory stick would be great for 1 MB Zelda and other games. Though if you put the roms in flash using Jackflash ect. they do work. And please in the next version can you have it support gameboy color!

This was a fairly good product. The only things I would like to see out if it is the ability to HotSync and to play games from the memory card, and the ability to convert .gba (GameBoy Advance) files as well. Other then that, GREAT JOB!!!

It runs well on non-ARM based handhelds. I hope they do release an ARM version of the emulator. It is a very nice software and it supports a large number of Gameboy games. Are there any plans to add support for Gameboy color and Gameboy Advanced games. With the added CPU power, it should be feasible, I hope.

Obviously Junie s below in giving Liberty such a bad review has only played the demo..and probably not figured out what overclocking means. I just bought Liberty this morning, got the reg file about 2 hours later, and spent literally the rest of the day playing Donkey Kong Land 3 (which I of course own ;) ). The beauty of the emulator is that I can play all the games I want without having to fork out for the expensive burnable Gameboy cartridges and cradle just so I can play romz on the real thing. Liberty works fine on my Palm m505 running at 66mHz! All in all, a fine use of my dad's credit card, and a fine example of how much faster Palms have gotten since the good old days of the Palm Pro and alike!

This progarm is amazing, It makes the Palm much more fun to play with. The lack of memory cards support takes out the ability to play big games (If you're not using MSMount). Anyway, I'm giving this emulator an A+ grade. The developer have done a great job. Steven Eil, Palmi - www.palmi.co.il
Works as advertised, but really - why bother? You might as well play the games on a GBC or GBA...
It's just not the same on a palm : (

Despite all the raving reviews here, I really don't see what's so great about liberty and its games? If you want to play gameboy games, why not just buy the electronic gadget rather than waste money on an emulator that does a pretty bad job emulating the original thingy. Firstly the game sounds are awkward, you are better off without the sounds which then makes the games boring. Secondly, many of the games take off at a retarded pace. Overall gaming experience: BAD.
keith dylan wrote at 03/30/2002
ALMOST a five-star program --- Needs better sound support, and slightly better speed, but the same is true of most emulators. At any rate, runs fine on both the Clie PEG-S360 and the T-415. Nice emulator for sure. Kinda dissapointed in the lack of speed though. My clie is a 33mhz machine, and I overclock it to 44mhz and alot of games are STILL too slow to play comfortably. Other than that, there are many games that work great. Final Fantasy games, Zelda games, any RPG type game works smooth (anything without a ton of fast movement, really) -- so if you're into RPGs or puzzle games, etc. give it a try. Also some side-scrollers work great (EG: Bonk's adventure, Metroid II, and Adventure Island) but, some are really crappy, like the Mega Man series, and Castlevania... I seriously doubt this is the fault of the software, but more the fault of the ROMS themselves. Easy to convert with the included programs. Nice package. Overall, would be 5 stars if it had slightly better sound, and a bit more speed. definitely worth the download and possibly registering. Lots of hard work went into this, i'm sure. Thanks!

Liberty does work on the Pilot 5000.. if you have a 2MB upgrade card. Afterburner is required, (my P5k will overclock to 22MHz) and Tetris is just playable (without sound). Pretty impressed to see my ancient device doing this! :-)
livonya silone wrote at 01/07/2002
This emulator is the best that currently exists for the Palm. The user interface is wonderful (supporting both graffiti area and the hardware buttons), the gray/color tweaking is useful, and it is decently fast (emulation takes a lot of horsepower and you can't blame the developer for too much). I tried running it on the Palm VX with Afterburner 3 and OS3.5.3. Everything ran fine without crashing. I tried Tetris and Legend of Zelda. Tetris, in all its simplicity, was very playable at 26mhz, skipping every other frame. Zelda was a bit too complex for it at those settings, but otherwise ran fine.
However, there is a problem! This emulator does not emulate the catridge RAM at all. Ram is used by cartridges like Zelda to save game information, and Liberty's save state feature covers that. However, some games like Pokemon (Red/Blue/etc) use the RAM to store information even during game play. When trying to save pokemon or save deck information, various problems crop up, either corrupting data in the game or causing random resets of the game (not the Palm device though). This type of problem actually prevents players from fully enjoying the game and is not covered by the save state feature.
The freeware emulator called PalmBoy does support cartridge RAM, and so these games function perfectly in Palmboy, but not in Liberty. Liberty's designers recommend that users play role playing games and other games with less fast action, but they do not support the most popular handheld rpg ever!
I submitted these problems to the Liberty staff about a week ago, but have not gotten a response yet. Nonetheless, I think that overall this is the best emulator. The ability to save and restore state at any point in the game is certainly useful, and it is difficult to imagine a better interface or more complete feature set. Please start supporting cartridge RAM use in the future, and then the program will deserve 5 stars!
(Of course, I could be wrong with the saving and restoring of data. But I don't think Liberty can support those in-game features.)

Incredible! The only flaws are that sound doesn't work correctly with all ROMs and you need to overclock for it to run at a reasonable speed. This is a must have! Buy it now!
Justin Lenssen wrote at 06/19/2001
This software for the palm is amazing. It has all you would want for the Game Boy emulator. The real catch though of coarse would have to be the svae state. Definetly the best out so far. Thanks to the guys who made this!! The price for it is not bad at all, well worth the fun. One flaw though. They gotta get the game boy color ones to some how work on the non color palms. But nothing comes close to this, and lets see what they will have in the future with updated versions.
Yun Zhou wrote at 02/05/2001
It's an awesome emulator, and it impressesd me for a while. This didn't last, becasue (ignore this if i'm wrong) although it had save state support, it didn't have save RAM support, so all games can't use their own save interface, and the games that give you special features when you beat the game can't do it if they don't have an emulated Save RAM. Overall, I prefer PalmBoy because it is FREE and it seems to actually emulate faster than Liberty. When playing Final Fantasy Legend 3, PalmBoy gave me EXCELLENT performance when only using 22MHz overclock, and Liberty was still slow and choppy(I had to set frame "blit" to 2) even after I had overclocked it to 42 MHz. The best advantage that Liberty has over PalmBoy is that it can emulate games more than 512k(Although i'm really keeping my fingers crossed for the next version of PalmBoy which the author thinks it will emulate larger ROMs) Overall, get Liberty if you have some cash to spend, 16 dollars is not much, and I don't think it is either, but I can't spare it.

Great! This emulator is very good and I have used it for quite some time, ever since it was first released. I now have several suggestions for Aaron.
1. Impliment full-screen support. The titlebar is annoying and is waste space.
2. Multiple save states for each game.
3. Show how much KB each save state takes up in the "Saved Games" window.
4. Impliment full sound support. (Or if all channels cannot be emulated at once, be able to switch between a combination of any of the channels.) NOTE: Thanks for implimenting sound already! It was another big step...
5. Configurable titlebar space. User should be able to change what buttons appear. Consider adding a "PAUSE" button for conveniece, as well as a "SAVE" state button, etc.
6. Please add a link to CHANGES.TXT on this web page! It is annoying to have to download the ZIP just to read the CHANGES.TXT, because Liberty is updated so often!

This program does what it says it does. The GUI is great. Very clean prog (run on a palm m100) It is only useful with afterburner or similar overclocker (quickbits alone doesnt cut it.) My only problem is that it sucks the life out of batteries at a voracious rate. Sadly, I dont beleive that this can ever be remedied (due to the nature of the processing power required.) This is the only factor that eludes the fifth star.
Jimmy Baker wrote at 10/18/2000
It is quite a well-done piece of software. To really get the best speed out of it, you need a Handspring Visor afterburnered to 32 MHz. Then you need to play with the throttle and the frame skip, but eventually it works great! Super Mario Land plays almost as fast as the real thing!

WOW! I have got the solution for the speed problem!! Here is what you do:<BR>
1. Download QuickBits. (It can be found here at palmgear.com)<BR>
2. Run QuickBits. Let it do all the tests.<BR>
3. Download Afterburner. And in the main menu check 0-ws core, fast mpx, fast page, and adjust ticks. Then click on speeds, then scroll to Liberty, and put the speed up to 32 mhz.<BR>
4. Run Liberty at amazing speeds! <BR>Almost like the real GameBoy!<BR>

Excellent update! The major issues I had with Liberty have been addressed:
<BR>
-The rom size has been cut in half! With compression, you would probably need the whole rom size available in free memory. And it would definitely run slower. You know you need 8 megs in your palm anyways!
<BR>
-SAVE GAME STATES!!! This is the "killer feature" that makes Liberty well worth registering. And they're small too (20-30 k for all of mine. Finally Pokemon, Zelda, Final Fantasy... are worth playing!

Of course, they also take a lot more processing power. The best games on the Palm tend to be the RPG/adventure/strategy/board games (like Pokemon, Dr. Mario, Monopoly, Final Fantasy, etc) [P.S. Sorry to do this as a 'review' As you would guess, my rating could be considered biased, so I just put it in the middle I think it deserves 5 stars for effort <wink>]

Great idea, but better implemented in desktop emus (most of which are freeware/cheaper).
The zip doesn't contain changes.txt, nor does the update info appear in any text file therewithin... so what is new ?
Also, instead of compressing the ROMs (which tend to achieve 50% ratio with simple zip), they are overbloated as PDBs.... why ?

Steffan Andrews wrote at 08/08/2000
Excellent! A superb creation for the Palm, Liberty is by far the one and only gameboy emulator for the Palm platform. It works well and when tweaked, it almost runs at full speed. I have three suggestions, however: 1) Possible partial sound emulation implimentaion? 2) Working save states for all games? 3) REDUCE ROM SIZES! This is why I give three stars. The fact that converted ROMs are double the size of the original is unacceptable. For new games like Pokemon, you are stuck with a whopping 2mb ROM file that was originally 1mb. If there is no other way of reducing file sizes, that is understandable, but for those with little memory on their Palm, the ROMs leave an outrageously large footprint.
Kevin Ravenscock wrote at 08/07/2000

Nathan Hunt wrote at 08/05/2000
(That is not my real email adress, by the way, I didn't want to be sent spam.)
I think Liberty is a cool idea, but implementation is not very good. First, the 32K limit in the demo. I only found one game (Tetris) and that is exactly 32K. I would like it very much to be able to play worthwhile games in the demo before I shell out $17.
Second, the speed is terrible. Even with my Visor overclocked to 32MHz, Tetris was unplayable.
Due to these shortcomings, I will not register Liberty until it is faster and lets you play good games in the demo.

Truly a breakthrough in Palm software technology. Bringing the GameBoy emulator to the Palm is defenately a stepping stone in the Palm community. However, after the novalty woar off, I wanted to start using Liberty for playing games. Although it 'supports' saving your game, it really doesn't. I heard that there will be a big update in the beginning of August that will add the abliity to save the game state and saving built into the games (Zelda, Pokemon). When they impliment these, Liberty will not only be a novelty and a breakthrough, it will be very useful as well! Three cheers for Maven and Aaron! Well done!

This is message in reply to Del's comment about Kevin's remarks. Del is right somewhat, if you leave the game and come back to it, the game is saved. If you go to the liberty main screen and play another game, when you return to the orginal game then BAM! nothing. The game will not be saved. I am a liberty registered owner and have heard that in early Aug they will have a saved version (for Zelda and others) This will be a huge improvement in the game.

I did a cumbersome backup routine, I use Resource edit and switched name on the Gmbit_SAVEGAME file and then copy it to the Flash. Then I can switch game, and when I want to save that I do the same routine and switch back to game no 1, exit Liberty (without exiting the game) and copy back the backup and renaming it to the original SAVE_GAME name. That could be programmed into the Liberty... <hint hint> and even without backing it up to the flash, a separate savestate for each game would be nice, with FlashPack taking care of the backup...
Ian Gianni wrote at 07/15/2000
An impressive technical achievement, but even with a palm overclocked to 310% (being 100% the speed of a normal IIIx), it runs at about 70% of the speed of a real Gameboy; this is good enough for adventure games, unfortunately adventure games are almost unplayable without being able to save, so the software is of limited use.<BR>
If Liberty had a save feature it could easily become the best software for the palm in a long time.

I found (after some tinkering with the Afterburner software) that it emulates a Gameboy at about 3/4s speed for most games. Downloaded the game and installed. Great concept --- but the 32kb seems to make it impossible to try out. Could only find one game that fit below that threshold.
<BR>
Speed is an issue. Slow --- even overclocked at 32mhz. Hope there's a solution to that ... this is a great concept.

Downloaded the demo (which is a complaint that you can only use 32k or under).
<BR>
The program works, and works well, but is not even close to full speed. This isn't the fault of the programmers, it's a hardware limitation.
I have my IIIxe overclocked to 29mhz and the only thing that runs well is Dr. Mario.. even this little gameboy Tic Tac Toe game I found runs slow.
<BR>
It's a great idea and done well, but it can only run as fast as the hardware can go.
<BR>
I probably won't be registering because of the speed issue.

This thing is AMAZING. I helped debugging/testing the 1.0c version and now its not only stable but even faster and smaller than before! Great support response from Ardiri (its already adfter 3am here).<BR>
All roms i tested run perfectly and with Afterburner at 32mhz it just feels real! Now all we need is a hardware keypad that plugs to the serial port...

This program is fantastic! As far as the image is concerned, its a perfect representation of a gameboy. What this program is lacking is speed, and button response. Even when i overclock my TRGPro past 30mhz Tetris runs slower than normal. Dr Mario on the otherhand works perfectly.
Had this program been out longer i would have given it one less star. Most pc versions of emulators are far more buggy than this when they first come out so i am very willing to overlook that.
In conclusion, this is an fanstastic program as it stands now. If this program gets the updates it needs, i'm sure it will inspire people to buy palms just so they dont have to lug a stack of gameboy games.

Speed problems are easily fixed with Afterburner (V2 will do, and this one's free). Will improve over time.
I must register it.

What an awesome concept! I've been waiting for software such as this...but the games are too slow. It is as if I am watching ice melt. The buttons to some games are unresponsive as well. Overall, a great concept and one that I will be sure to register once some of speed issues have been worked out.

Excellent. Works fine on my IIIx fully overclocked with afterburner. ONly problem is it eats through batteries when its that overclocked, plus I'm starting to worry about overclocking my palm so much, i dont want to break it...

The emulator works on my IIIc, but it is waaaaay too slow. It might run some simple games when you fully overclock it, but for most games it is still too slow to really be playable. It seems very unresponsive as well.

Well, so far everything I tried incl. tetris runs really slow, BUT Dr. Mario runs great, when set to every 3rd frame, and with ARtberburner at 28mHz (and other tweaks like wait states on) on my IIIc.
Great job! Quite an achievement!

I really don't know what people are ragging this for. The emulator runs perfectly on my Palm IIIx and with the use of CruiseControl it runs at near full speed. I've purchased the full version, and it was worth every penny. I have about 14 games on my Palm now that I can play with no problems. I owe Michael Ethetton and Aaron Ardiri a big round of applause. Even computer versions of GameBoy emulators aren't this good.

Great idea,
Although the shareware version could give us a use of at least 500k
Very cool prog
Gong Shenlei wrote at 07/07/2000
It's really slow!!!
I have use FastCPU to overclock the Liberty to 200% faster(29MHz), but is still very slow... All I wish now is the author should let us run later than 100KB ROM size!!!
Janice Karin wrote at 07/06/2000
When I tried Liberty 1.0 with OS 3.02 it crashed. I reported the crash and had a new working version within 5 minutes. Now that's what I call great technical support!
<BR>
Just a note that Liberty will run on Palm Pilot Professionals with an OS3 upgrade - the limitation listed above is for OS2.

Good, but it has problems, needs to be accelerated by 20-25%. Buttons are a bit unresponsive. And most of all, allow at least 100kb for the shareware version!!! all i can get on this thing is the original tetris!
