Used this app in Paris, France and what a HUGE difference it made. While I cannot read French, this app made it real simple to get from point A to point B. The stations were at least numbered, if you couldn't read the text. THANK YOU so much. Thanks for helping me get around a country that STILL isn't very nice to Americans! Keep up the good work!

After my wife and I spent a long weekend in Washington, DC, I saw that there had been an update to Metro. And then it hit me. All the time we were there, we could have been using this app. D'ohhhh. Better late than never, I tested it retrospectively and it worked like a charm. (I was still a little sad that I failed to remember to use it while we were there!) I also tested our "local" transit system and it worked great, too. Hopefully I will remember to use it on our next trip! :) Thank you for making this available as freeware.

Have been downloading updates for a year and have found the programme mildly useful - until I travelled to Paris last month. NOW I FIND IT FANTASTIC. Able to plan and time trips accurately in advance. Relate attractions to Metro stations quickly. Even had instant response from developers when I had a query. (Do you guys do anything else all day other than be helpful for free?)

This software makes the entire Palm OS device worthwhile! They're generally "cool gadgets", but MetrO is *vital* if you travel. It has helped me make my way in Chicago, London, Paris, and more quickly and easily. Everyone I've ever shown the program to is amazed ... and when I tell them it's FREE they just stare open mouthed! I think Palm should pay these folks.

This free program was THE reason I was able to get around Paris so easily on my first trip there. I really like how I was able to enter popular landmarks and tourist destinations, and Metro would tell me which station to go to. This is fantastic -- especially for the price -- and I will definitely use it on future trips.

Very Useful. Very deatailed. Only downside is there is no map of the underground in it, meaning you still need to pickup a subway map to see where you are, and where you are going, in real time. At the very least, an underground map to look at would be great... Even greater, being able to press the underground station to select it as a start or finish point. Very Good for Freeware. Good Luck :-)

A fantastic piece of software. Best of all, it is free and updates are free as well. Thank you to the developers! Of the cities I have used this application for, it has been up-to-date and I've always ended up in the right spot. I always ask other commuters, but that's because of my insecurity. Never has this application failed me. It's free and reasonably up-to-date. You have nothing to lose by trying this out I say.

Very great software, and I couldn't believe it is a freeware. Database could be installed in a separate folder of my memory card (and I can load all the cities I want with my 256mb SD card!). The other freeware software of this excellent developer, "Folder", makes it easy to load updated database file directly to its proper SD folder after a hotsync (just direct the pdb file to the expansion card, and "FOLDER" does this automatically for you). I highly recommend installing both FREE softwares. It takes very small bite off your handheld main memory. Thank you very much!

I can't believe that this is still free! I first installed it when it's available on B/W. And I went to use it on Paris. I can't live without my Palm, all because of this. I don't need to refer to the messy Metro map. All I have to do is key in the station I'm at, the station I'm going to, and what do I get? A very detailed description of what trains I should take. This is a must-have for any traveller who uses the subway system in any city. I'm going to use this in London next!

Living in Chicago, I've always felt the need to know my choices (loads of public transport is sometimes confusing) for quickest means of travel, w/o asking around like a tourist or planning ahead using internet. now, i can travel light (no heavy maps) and can compute/update my travel plans on the way. Really detailed, really helpful software. Thank you guys...

I have been using this program for years and have just realised that I have never reviewed it. Quite simply the finest and most useful piece of freeware on a Palm. I live in Paris and travel to London regularly. I use this program almost daily as I now live in the suburbs and have to travel more on public transport. This program is absolutely indispensable. The only additional feature I would like to request, and I certainly wouldn't remove even a fraction of a star due to the lack of this function, is the ability to save at least one train station. In other words I would like to be able to set my "home" location so I do not have to enter it each time as my point of departure or arrival. I think it would also be useful, following the same principle, to have a notion of "favourites" as stations one uses regularly. With or without this additional functionality this program is worth 100 times its price!

I frequently travel to Tokyo for work. This program in excellent is telling me how to make my connections on the local trains. I also love that you can turn off different rail lines, that way you can travel only by subway or only by train. My only request would be to include Shinkansen data. Otherwise this is one of THE BEST programs for the palm and it's free!

Often the most useful apps you have are the most simple. If work or leisure take you around the worlds big cities and you like to tackle the local public transport then you will half your stress by having this with you and no doubt save a good deal of valuable time too. It is accurate, fast and intuitive to use. The number of cities with data now available is ever increasing. IT IS FREE!!!! Get it.

This app almost filled a basic need for me in terms of Public Transport in Melbourne. Some minor information was incorrect, but apart from that the connections and timing was mostly accurate. One feature that I did miss was that there was no way to see the actual timetable so I could find out exactly what time a train departed or arrived. Considering it must have some basic timetable information to calculate connections, this shouldn't be too difficult to do. I don't just want to see that I can catch a train in an hour window to get me to where I want, I want to see what time that train leaves and how much time I have to connect to another service/line. Otherwise a handy utility.

Works Like a Charm! I've been in Seoul for 2 weeks now and the locals here don't even fully know the complex subway route system and take a wrong train ocassionally, but I haven't had one mishap or missed appointment using MetrO and even the locals ask about it! It displays just enough detail but is so simple to use and best of all totally up-to-date and revised regularly. Can't beat this program - and it's free to boot!

This is a must have item for anyone visiting a city for the first time. Especially handy is the ability to "personalize" the locations used. We added the metro stop nearest our Paris hotel in our handheld (Palm) address book, as well as restaurants or other sites not already in the very extensive list of sites. Worked every time and gave us great confidence.

I can't understand why he doesn't charge for this program. I've tried shareware programs that claim to do everything MetrO does, and this program is _still_ better than all the rest. The NYC map is ridiculously accurate, and it's expansive - the entire NYC area, PLUS as far out as Newark, NJ! Why pay for a subway map when you can get a fast-computing subway map, ferry map, and bus schedule...for free?? Same thing for the Philly and Montreal maps - I grew up in Philly, and this calculates the same routes I had to figure out looking at a map. I wish I had this program when I was in Montreal - would have saved me the trouble of trying to decipher the French Metro guide I picked up. Kudos! Great program!!

I have used this program only in Paris, and even so it is priceless. Don't try to use the Paris metro without it! The Paris metro is complex, and with this program you get the fastest way between two stations and the way with the fewest changes. The only thing it doesn't tell you is the number of stairs! It is really amazingly useful.

As if they couldn't leave well enough alone, the new 5.0 OS5 Armlet actually does calculate and display the results instantaneously. What an excellent program and an incredible update. A must have if you are anywhere near a town/city with a metro (or even bus for Paris). To the previous reviewer .... you can move databases to/from memory cards from within MetrO.
Ismail Mustapha
wrote at 05/27/2003
A correction from my earlier review. It DOES work with data stored on the memory card. However, requires moving the files in certain subdirectory. To do this you'll need to install in main memory first, then use a file-manager to move them into the right directory. So read the userguide carefully. BTW, I was pleasantly surprised by instant response from the developer when I wrote an e-mail. You don't normally get that for freeware.

Great program - ridiculously small (less than 100KB for executable plus route database), dead simple to use - no Graffiti with everything pickable from lists - and, from experience, the routes it works out for London Underground are what I would take anyway. Unfortunately, when (overground) railways are added in, some results are misleading because the railway maps round London are incomplete and frequency of service isn't part of the database (a few routes only run at certain times). However, the application that takes those into account would be much less elegant, and I'm going to work out and send in some data that tackles part of the first problem :)

All I needed on my first trip to London was a folding map and my Palm V. We saw poor tourists staring at tube station maps trying to figure out which train went where while we passed them by knowing exactly where to go next. I can't say enough about this program! We're off to London and Paris next Spring and I guarantee I'll have the latest Metro installed. My only suggestion would be a printable user guide included in the zip file.

I am planning a trip to Paris this fall and am looking forward to using this program. Wish I'd had it when I was there 2 years ago! I'm amazed at the amount of information it contains and the speed of the calculations. It's already helping me to plan my itinerary. To JP who asked about how to use the address book interface: Create a custom field called "Metro" in the Palm address book, then enter the nearest stop for each contact. Use the phone icon back in the MetrO program to pull up contacts. For more detailed info on this and other tips, use the Avantgo channel dedicated to MetrO tips and updates.

Modular concept, software design and code execution is superb!!!. Two suggestions for future updates: 1)Show alternate routes or let user disable stations (I faced a "just one nigth" closed station in Paris) 2) Include buses routes in Rome. (Buses are here a better option than Metro because their coberture). Congratulations Metro Team!!

This program is just awesome to get around in an unfamiliar city by public transport. Besides the new techniques of passanger information through SMS- or WAP-services provided already by some German public transport companies this program is a cheap, easy and fast way to find his or her way around. It is really the most handy program in the public transport field I have found so far. It should be more promoted though, even people at transport companies don't know it. I have used Metro heavily for more than a year and a half, and I couldn't agree more with the positive reviews. I have one suggestion that the authors seem to have begun working on already--merging train and bus routes in the same city database. The optimal train+bus route might be much, much better than either taken separately. (The merged database should not just be for the Pocket PC either!)

This software is more than excellent! It is really an amazing thing when developers develop software like this. First, it is the most complete reference I have seen on any subway map in the world. Second, it is free. Third, the developer is really interested in this and provides regular updates. Fourth, it is compatible totally with Palm regulations and supports OS5. And all this, while keeping the smallest footprint I could ever imagine for an app of this magnitude. Keep it up guys!

In fact, this is probably one of the best peices of software I've ever used, period. Travel or not. I'm astonished (and impressed) that this is freeware, as I would gladly pay $15 for it. It's accurate, and makes taking complicated train/bus trips easy to plan. It provides multiple routes, so you can choose which is best for you. An absolute essential. I've been using this ever since the first version came out. <BR> I live in London and use it when I have to plan a route to stations off my normal commute. I also used it on the ridiculously complicated Paris Metro last year - having this program was what got me back to Gard Du Nord in time to get the Eurostar back home. Without it I wouldn't have stood a chance. <BR> The only thing which would make it better would be a London bus route database.

It is by far the most useful route calculator ever! My wife and I went to Paris recently and I'd say it probably saved us about 75% of our trying to map our route from one station to another. For those of you who have been to Paris know the spider-web-like design of the Paris Metro system but this piece of software made travelling so easy! I felt so sorry for those tourists who spent all that time navigating through the metro with just their maps!

Great product, it is near perfect, I was introduced to it last year with a Chinese localized Taipei database, but anyhow the complete offering is worldwide and HUGE, it probably the second largest project worldwide (first would be GNU). If it supports an easier onboard way to modify the database and slap in a user created map it'll be perfect. Since Toronto for one has a small system but weirdly shaped.

Metro is awesome - I travelled to Tokyo in June(01), and considering the incredible complexity of the system (three independently owned major subway systems, and many more smaller private lines) this found the best route for many different circumstances. And since Metro includes the ability to selectively 'turn off' different lines, I could calculate a route based on either transferring between systems or staying on one system. Even Tokyo natives who saw the program in action were very impressed with how well it calculated the best route between either named subway stops or to the included list of 'attractions.' I can't recommend this program enough to anyone who travels to a new city and wants to confidently use an unknown subway system.

This program is GOLDEN. This is one of those gem must-haves for anyone living in and especially going to a city with a subway system. I live in the New York City that has a complex (but not complicated), extensive subway system. This week, I had to do some major traveling around the city, showing my friend around NYC, and MetrO has saved me a lot of time! It pointed out faster ways of getting from place to place that I would not have thought of by myself. For example, one time it suggested taking an express train in the downtown direction to a stop after my destination and then taking a local train back uptown for one stop to my destination. This saved me approximately 15 minutes of travel time, which was simply super, as I was late to a concert. Without it, I would've taken the local train, not noticing that I could "overshoot" with an express train real quick and then correct with a local one. One of its greatest aspects is showing both the "fewest stops" and "fewest connections" routes! Sometimes it's not reasonable to make an extra connection just to skip one or two stops--the time spent waiting at the connection can outweigh the benefits of the fewest stops route. Sometimes one is not in a hurry and just wants to get on a train and get somewhere with the least fuzz. The choice of two different kinds of routes is extremely useful. I can't believe this program is free! Amazing! I tried another subway program, let's just say that it's the one that was "built for New York City"... Aside from being crippled shareware, it was rather lackluster in interface, and gave only the fewest stops route, which was not the best choice in some cases.

I'm a Seoul native, so I'm very familiar with Seoul's subway system. But there still are times when I'm counting the number of stations of the subway map to figure out the fastest route to my destination. And I sure wished that I had the subway map loaded on my Palm. Then I stumbled across this excellent free app. As far as I can tell, MetrO's subway maps are very up-to-date, and the route calculations are accurate. Even the time-estimates were right on the money in most cases. And it even has a Korean-localized version! And the next time I visit my friend in New York City, I won't need to be staring at the subway map for directions either. Great app, and I can't believe it's FREE!!

Multiply that by all the cities involved and you have a detailed, well written and easy to follow guide to travelling through metro systems in every city there is one to travel. This program is simply impressive. I really wonder how it can covers so much cities. I tried some querry for Brussels, my own city and it covers the metro, tramways but not bus. This means the result of the querries are not always the best, but if there weren't busses it would be give the perfect route. But it allow the traveller not to be lost and the maps will probably be improved in the future. The times estimated are also very accurate. It also takes a ridiculously low amount of ram : the program is 29k, big cities maps like Paris are 20k, New York 36k, London 16k,... It's also free wich is amazing for a program of a such quality so you don't loose anything to give it a try.

I hope it works for other cities but it does not for New York; it is safer to rely on a map for unfamiliar routes. Right now I am looking at the message: "Roosevelt Island station is unknown." Odd, since I take a train from that station all the time, on the Q line. I also have had it give complex directions for getting from one station to another, involving changes of direction and trains when simple, more direct routes are available.

I have lived in New York City for more than 40 years. I immediately thought Metro was the best Palm software to date. I thought maybe I was biased so I had a co-worker who came from Liberia,Africa only four months ago use it for one weekend. He and his family said it was a great help and some minor things like "walk to 6th Avenue" caused them to leave the subway and walk to 6th Avenue then have to pay again to get back on the subway. Maybe in a future release you could re-word it to make it clear you must simply walk through a tunnel at 42nd Street.

Living in New York City and knowing the complexity of the subway system, Metro just confuses a person more. It would be more helpful to have an NYC subway map and be able to click to go from destination to destination in addition to the text input. Overall, definately inadequate for an NYC subway rider. Bring a map along if you are using this because Metro will not be enough to figure out how to get from one place to another.

This is definitely a great free app. The New York City map could use some work, as it is a bit tricky to navigate. I tried a couple of queries and I think one concern is that you would have to know which subway line corresponds to the station you are trying to find (i.e. there are different stations with the same name on different lines and there are stations on different lines that are really close by but without direct transfers. Additionally, some of the wording could be changed to reflect the signage in the stations (i.e. instead of "towards Jamaica Center", say "Uptown and Queens"), so that one would have an idea before they may end up on the wrong platform. Despite these problems, I believe it's a good effort given the complexity of the NYC Subway System to begin with.

Good effort. The San Francisco module is somewhat lacking. First off, it does not give you any indication of what kind of train you are looking for (BART, CalTrain.. this may be confusing to a newcomer). It also does not support the Municipal Railway streetcar/subway. This means that it sometimes gives inferior instructions (like say Civic Center to CalTrain: instead of taking BART and walking, the N-Judah MUNI line would take you right there); and also makes it of limited utility to those in the City proper. It is, however, an excellent engine, and with MUNI subway additions, would be perfect for SF.

I'm from NYC and I must say that they did a very poor job on the NYC metro directions. To go from World Trade to Union Square would require either the N or the R for 5 stops. Not taking the several lines and transferring as the Metro has suggested. I suggest anyone using for NYC not to. I just hope that the other cities are more accurate!
