I have been using this for a few years now. I would give it 5 stars but it does not work in my Treo 650. On my TC it works perfectly replacing 8 other remote controls units including my tivo remote. It takes a while to get it trained, but when you do it is worth it.

I have been using Omniremote for about 3 years now. It is a superb program. When we can't find the remote control (often in a house with toddlers!) this is a great standby. My co-workers used to stand on top of tables to get the infocus machine to turn on. I had to write a review because I saw so many reviews about instability. I went thru that experience. The developer helped me find out that it was Palm's Keyboard Driver. Any version after 1.9 locks the IR and when OmniRemote tries to do something you get the crashes. To those reviewers out there, please downrev to 1.9, and don't use an IR based keyboard. Another thing I saw was distance issues. I have seen distance shortened by high light levels, but, I've had no distance problems on my T2, or where I could dim the lights. This is a great remote for the small footprint it takes on your Palm. If you want a good IR remote, then this is it!

I have a Treo 600 and could not make it work at a reasonable distance. Most likely the limitation is related to the device. The concept is excellent otherwise and I would recommend anyone to at least try it to see if your unit's InfraRed is powerful enough.

I agree with previous reviewers that if you have a Tungsten device, don't bother with this program. It crashes, plenty of codes simply don't work no matter how many times you train them, and it takes 7 to 14 days to get just a "I've passed your info on to the developer" reply for assistance. A shame, because the application is quite powerful (especially macros) and works well on older devices (eg m505).

This review refers to a previous version of OmniRemote (2.10). I liked it very much, but started to have trouble on a Zire21, especially if the Zire turned off while the remote was active. Upon repowering the Palm, the device would freeze and have to be reset. Occasionally it would interfere with Infrared HotSync, but this was easy to work around. All in all I think this is a very good application, with only minor trouble getting it to work with some devices (just reprogram). I do feel that it costs just a little bit more than I would like to pay for it, but my advice is that if you like it, buy it. It has a generous trial period; plenty of time to check for problems and see if it works for you.

"If I could have only 1 remote with these buttons (mixing commands from several remote controls), the gain in "productivity" would be unrivaled." This was stated by another poster and I'm here to tell you that YOU CAN DO THIS. I have one screen set up to controll three devices. The Power button controls my TV, my channel up/down buttons control my VCR, and my volume up/down buttons control my stereo... all on one screen. I simply used the original remotes to train each set of buttons seperately. I've been using this program for OVER 3 YEARS and I can tell you that there is literally no limitations to how you can use it. Don't wanna program your VCR? Leave the Palm in front of the TV with a timed Macro set to record and stop recording at specified times. You can also set macros to one hard button on the Palm or to one button on the screen. When I run Omniremote, I can turn on my TV,VCR,stereo, AND DVD with one button linked to a macro. I have one button set to change the setting of TV/VIDEO and swich the TV to channel 3 so my kids can play nintendo. I have a screen set so I can take over my father-in-law's HDTV when we visit (and he hates it... mwhahahahaha!). It can run screen infrared screen projectors. I used it to control my kid's toy robot. I "borrowed" my buddy's car stereo remote and the next time I was in the back seat I was choosing the channels! Tell ya what; if you have any device at all that is run my remote infrared, you can most likely train the remote onto this program and use the Palm to replace it. Its that good. Without a doubt, the best part of this program is the ability to integrate all your other remotes into something you always have on you anyway; your palm. You CAN have multiple devices controlled off one screen AND you CAN design the screens to look anyway you like. You can add and delete buttons. You can retrain them. You can resize them. You can copy them to other screens. Its FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE and IT DOES WORK ON OS 5. I use this on my T3 everyday. I felt compelled to write this review because this program has been so good to me for so many years and I don't want misinformation being spread about its feature set. You will not find a more customizable remote control program out there for the palm.

This is just a short reply to say that Omniremote IS compatible is OS5. I have a Zire 72 and all the remotes at home are working fine. No problems at all! Top application and specially, VERY CUSTOMIZABLE, you can create your own buttons layout, that is where the concurrence fails, it just takes some more time to learn how to use.

This is a great piece of software and I was very happy with it even though it would not operate my TV (all of my other equipment, but not the TV). I've tried everything to get better results with the TV, but it's spotty at best. Then I tried the competition and it operates EVERYTHING, so at least now I know that it's not my Palm M500 that's the problem. However, now I'm torn between two remote control apps, wishing one would provide more customization while wishing the other one would operate all of my electronics! Oh, well...can't win them all, I guess. I really like how customizable OmniRemote is -- I have a VERY complicated remote for my amp that literally has 55 buttons on it. You just can't get all that on a non-customizable remote! The only drawback that I have with this software is that it just will not reliably operate my Philips TV, so I have to either use the competition to operate my TV or keep the ol' original remote around. Maybe a better IR driver is needed? Definitely worth checking out though. You can get addicted to creating "The Perfect" remote, so watch out!

FAIR. It's not too bad. Where it loses major is its lack of compatibility with PalmOS 5 (at least when I tried it). What I like most about it is that you can make your own buttons, that's pretty good. I'm not too fond of the interface though. Another place it loses major points is the fact that you actually have to program the remote.

********************20 STARS! I purchased this when I first saw it and the latest update is simply awesome! I have tried NoviiRemote and the buttons are not customizable. With OmniRemote Pro you can draw your own buttons, your own shapes, draw them on the screen and drag them to where you want them and re-name them. It doesn't get any better than that! I bought the IR Booster from Tech Center Labs that plugs into the the bottom of my PDA and it now has a range of 30 feet or more. This is absolutely THE BEST remote for PDAs!

Fair. The rating is Fair. On the positive side, this program lets you creat a screen, then fill it with buttons, then train the buttons. This means that you get exactly the buttons you want/use for the device in question. There are no "dead" or "missing" buttons, because you add what you want/need. On the negative side, this program lets you create a screen, then fill it with buttons, then tran the buttons. Thus, you forego the fancy and snazzy looks of other programs and a polished interface. What you make is what you get. The program itself appears to be temperamental. A one-star rating just because it doesn't run on a Tungsten-E seems harsh for two reasons: First, I am using it on a Tungsten-E and it works, second, it is available as a free trial download. By all means, download and test. I have found other quirkieness. Even though 95 percent of the program works, two commands on my cable box remote just won't train. Also, the range is not that impressive. Note also, that this program supports macros assigned to a custom button. This means that you can actually program a button to label your time-shift recording of Survivor :) rather than having to pick letters laboreously out of the numeric keypad of your DVDR remote. This is a great program in need of an update, making it still a good program. Try before you buy, though.

I would have given it a 5 if I could have installed it on my NX, but.... I registered the pro version which worked with every remote I used for training. It didn't matter which remote, it accepted training input from all of them on my Handspring Neo. As I said, my NX is another matter. Don't even bother. It would be great if it could be made to work on an NX, it is better than the built in remote control software.

A very good program that lets me control just about anything with a 6~8 foot range. The only flaws are that it can't emulate "smart" remotes, like the ones that control many AC units, and it doesn't allow you so assign actions to buttons on a keyboard or graffiti strokes.

Shows absolutely no apparent support for the Tungsten|E model. Os5, maybe, but it wouldn't work on my E for all I tried. What's disappointing is I've used this software on other palms, it's excellent (mainly for the custom interfaces).

I too went back to my older version, and I won't rehash the rehash of reasons why. It's simpler, and cleaner than any other Remote Package out there, and does not look like a toy, but a real app. This version just didn't seem to like my boosted Palm Pilot (OS3 +IR upgrade) one bit. But hey, up till now it got 5 stars, and it did what I needed it to do, so no biggie :)

I am using this software in my zire 71, its good that you can configure it in many ways, but it doesn't work with most TV's, VCR's, CD Player's, ect..., and on the few it works with, I get very short range, maybe up to a meter (3ft.3in.)even after following all the instructions.

OK for the TV, but doesn't work on my Sky Digital receiver. Since that is what I use most of the time, the software is pretty useless to me. Also it seems disappointing that there is no simple code feeding facility (in addition to training), like on most all-in-one remote control devices you can buy in the market.

I had the original version of Omni Remote on my Palm IIIc, which, I loved, and would have given a 5 star rating, but now that I've uploaded this version to my Zire 71, it reboots my palm every time I try to execute the program! That's never been my impression of a good program, in fact, I could almost go as far as calling that 'bad.'

I finally have one remote that I can use with my home theater and other devices. To date, I have no problems with programming any device. It works from at least 20 feet away; haven't tried it further since that's as far I can go in my two rooms. I give this two thumbs up.

I own a Palm TC with the registered version of this software and after training for 5 TVs, 2 VCRs, and a DVD player (each only one time), the only complaint is that when I try to exit back to my launcher (Z, Silver, face, Mega, and default)it often times locks my palm. I have wrote the developer and I am awaiting a responce. It works from over 15 feet for me. So I do not mind reseting the palm from time to time.

Giving this a 'fair' based on the potential. However, I programmed a few remotes into my Tungsten C and NONE of them would control the devices. Has *anyone* managed to get it to work with a Tungsten C? P.S. I have the latest library update installed that's supposed to resolve some IR issues.

Looks like it might be a good app from the other reviews. However the statement that it works for all Palm OS devices is practically incorrect : For the Sony Clie TG50 it works, but over a range of perhaps 2 feet - while Sony's own (poorly featured) remote program works over in excess of 15 feet. No amount of training/fiddling seems able to improve upon 2 feet. Easier to press the VCR button directly I feel ....

This is a great universal remote application and I've been a registered user since 2000. I was, however, very disappointed with v2.0 support on OS5 (training did not work, graphics were far worse than my m515). I just wanted to post here that v2.08 (5/1/03) of this software, fixes everything it claims too. The Hi-Res on TungstenT is very nice now and they did fix the training problem on OS5 devices. The application now works flawlessly on TungstenT devices, and much appreciated, is support for the 4-way navigator pad which gives nearly identical control as a real DVD or TV remote. Kudos to Pacific Neo-Tek for continuing to support and improve this great program.

This is the best remote for a palm. You can customize the buttons and create macro buttons. The high level of customization of OmniRemote makes it a very good product. I had no trouble training it for all of my components--one of them a 20 year old NEC Monitor. I did find a major problem(?). Sometime, after a soft or hard reset you have to retrain all of buttons even if you previously saved them to your SD card (or etc). This is very tedious. If this didn't happen this would be a 5 star product.

Within two hours of downloading the demo I had trained three remotes and had four working macro buttons in my own System category (i.e., on their own screen rather than one of the five that come standard). These macros do things like switch all necessary components so I can go from watching TV to playing with the PS/2 -- so one button press turns off the cable box, switches the TV input from cable to component, and switches the amp from TV to the channel I stuck the PS/2 on. And I tied my macros to the hard-buttons on the front of my CLIE. I also modified each of the standard screens with a new button that switches to my System screen. It's great that this product provides all the functions I wanted, but it's unbelievable that I could do all this with such a small learning curve. There do seem to be a few bugs when editing buttons -- labels all over the screen are sometimes shifted a bit after editing a button, and menus sometimes don't work thereafter, but a quick exit and reentry brings things back to

The application to have for any home theater buff! I now use my HandEra to control Yamaha amp, Sony vcr & dvd, Philips cd-r, JVC tv, and the lights of my room, they all bow to OmniRemote. OR has all the fuctions and works perfectly, leaving very little to be desired. I really am in awe! I did however get quite frustrated, trying to design individual screens for my various home theatre equipment. I have to suggest getting also the ORDesktop program, as designing screens on a PDA can be a tedious, time and battery-consuming job, eg. when a multichannel amplifier has tens of functions requiring several layouts or screens. You go nuts trying to accomplish those with OmniRemote alone. The screens supplied with OR will do just fine for any basic couch potato and serve as a good starting point, but advanced beets should definately get the ORDesktop to really make an excellent program perfect.

Superior app. Does just what it says. I can control any IR device that I come across in my day. Really handy when I lost my TVs remote for several weeks. The Palm certainly is not as handy as a dedicated remote, but it's there and works fine in a pinch. Now it doesn't matter when the kids play with the remotes and lose them.

OmniRemote Pro 2.02 is very intuitive, easy to use. Training is much easier and quicker than on other learning remote controls. The auto frequency detection feature is especially nice. One missing feature that would greatly enhance screen editing is "Undo". Currently, one way to Undo is to restore an older <datbasefile>.PDB, which only contains changes made before your last sync. Finding the last good PDB file can be time consuming. Graffiti pen strokes sometimes quit working. You have to click on the menu afterwards. Pacific Neo-Tek support staff is terrific. I submitted a question on a Saturday, and received a helpful response the same day. A general comment on all touch screen remote controls: You cannot operate the remote control by feeling for special button shapes or texture. Hard key setups help some.

OmniRemote is so much better than Palm Remote. OmniRemote has "normal" buttons. Palm Remote has no, not just 0-9 numbers, but 0-12! 10, 11, and 12, I don't remember seeing those no.'s on normal remotes. OmniRemote has all the normal buttons, you know, volume, last channel, favorite, and it's alot easier to make the software "learn" commands than with Palm Remote. Palm Remote has only 1 set of up and down buttons, not 2 (for volume and channel). And Omni remote dosen't try to squish all the buttons on to one screen. And OmniRemote has controls for not just TV and VCR, but those and Cable, CD, and Amp. And OmniRemote lets you create and draw you're own buttons and put 'em where ever you want. It also lets you flip the screen so that it aligns with the Infa-Red port on the side with Handsprings. And, OmniRemote can control the Lego Scout and Lego RCX. If you like OmniRemote, I suggest getting the OmniRemote Module or the OmniRemote springboard module.

OmniRemote is very cool. For about $220 you can buy a new low-end Palm or Handspring, the OmniRemote hardware and software, and the ORDesktop program and have a system that rivals a high-end dedicated programmable remote selling for $300-$400. Plus you get a new Palm! If you already have one, you'll spend only $50-$80. Having said that, I considered the OmniRemote solution and ended up getting a dedicated remote. I felt its hardware and software were slicker and worth the extra money. (Rather than plug a specific one, I'll just list some general review sites: www.remotecentral.com and http://equip.zdnet.com/theater/remotecontrols/feature/1908e.) My main purpose in writting this is to suggest a few software improvements for OmniRemote 1.171 that will make it more competative. 1) Allow word-wrap of long labels. 2) Allow buttons to have both an icon and a label. 3) Provide more icons (more symbols and more sizes). 4) Provide more grid sizes, e.g. to permit a 4x4 array of square buttons that fills the screen. 5) Reduce the need to use menu commands during setup. I think there could be just two modes, normal and setup. In setup mode, a small icon in the title bar could be used to change the setup submode: create, delete, move, resize, edit, or train. 6) Provide an easy way to move buttons between categories. This could be done with cut & paste, a category selector in the edit dialog box, or a dedicated command. 7) Allow buttons to toggle. The first press sends one IR code, the second press sends another, the third sends first IR code again, etc. This is for those annoying devices that have separate power on and power off codes. 8) Optionally allow hardware buttons to be category-sensitive. 9) The big one: provide database(s) of known button codes (or provide support for 3rd party databases using a standard database design). A Train from Database command could allow you to click a button and then select the IR code from a button list for a specific device.

It works great! For everyone that uses Internal IR, I'd get the OmniRemote mod. , which can be found at the PacificNeoTek website. This clips onto the bottom of your Palm III series device and acts as the "IR". It has an awsome range compared to the internal, and they have a special $10 off offer if you buy OmniRemote and the mod at once. For Visor users, there is a Springboard version which does the same thing. A most innovative concept indeed!

This is the first piece of Palm shareware I liked enough to keep and pay for about 2 or 3 years ago, and it's still going strong! I love the OmniRemote. It works great and still has that "gee-whiz" capability! Comes in handy when staying in a hotel too. It's fun to make the buttons where you want them. :) Download it and see if you like it too.

Excellent in that it is a really good software program and does everything it says it will do. Only drawbacks are the undeniably horrible placement of the infrared port on visors. Visors are great, but the IR port leaves me smoldering... >:(

The remote work perfectly with some appliances, but fail miserable to RCA VCR and Panasonic TV and VCR that I have. I understand that palm pilot probably doesn't have the hardware capability. (m100 and IIIc both have very stronge ir) But if the problem is like what the readme file said, reside on the difficulty of "learning" the different type of signal, then omniremote should provide way of manually enter the electronic applicance model name, like very other universal remotes. Untill then, I'm not buying a "half-niversal remote" that's better than my other half-ass universal remotes. And it's 20 buck. I mean the gameboy emulator is just 15 bucks. CY

I have been using the Omniremote software on a Palm 3 for over a year. I am very pleased with this product. I am using a ir repeater that attaches directly to the Palm that sends out an rf signal to a receiver that converts the signal back to ir.What this does is give the Palm a 150 ft.range, that passes the signal thru walls. This product sells for around $50. For a total of $70 you have a remote control that rivals other remote controls that sell for over $500. There is a very useful add on program called OrDesktop that allows you to program the Omniremote on your computer.

Fuggetaboutit this is excellent. Got rid of all my other remotes. P.S. people tend to whine and cry about programming it and the distance..HELLO? How much easier can it be? put it next to old remote.. press button. And if it doesnt go too far then stop bein so cheap and get the ir module for 10 bucks.

Although the software has proven true to some, I felt that the configuration process was not user-friendly at all. I think that the software could be geared more towards the general John Q. It's very tempting to call this program (if a few improvements were made) a killer app! With OmniRemote, I can now set aside 5 remotes for various home theater components. The range is excellent on my Palm Vx - I can control everything from my couch. I love the flexibility in designing the remote pages. For my TV, for example, I have a column with macros for favorite channels. A few gripes that I hope will be improved in the next version: 1) When you customize the 4 keys and page up/down buttons, and press them when you're not on the screen with the buttons they're assigned to, you'll still see the shade of the button when you press the key it's associated to (make sense?). 2) It'd be nice to be able to duplicate a design to assign it to a different remote. 3) Repeat is way too slow for things like volume and fast-forward. This should be customizable... 4) Macro playback speed should be customizable (it's possible to add delays, but I have some macros that go through the TV menu settings that could be completed in half the time or less).

To be able to have a remote on your palm or visor!!!! i really would register but my Palm VX's range isnt quite as good as my tv remote and it doesnt even have enough power to work on my cable box!! This app is wonderful but if you have a internal infrared then it mighty not have the range you expected!! but try it out to check. if it worked good i would keep it and get rid of my remotes but i gues not. :(

What an excellent piece of software! <BR> Works right out of the box, just point your existing remote at it to teach it and away you go. <BR> Very often Palm software looks great in a demo but turns out to be very awkward to use in practice. Not so with OmniRemote, it is clear that a lot of thought has gone into the UI of this product, and it is a joy to use. <BR> It's a shame that the IR power on a Palm (V in my case) means it will not work across the average tv viewing distance, but that doesn't matter for my use. I work at home, and have speakers in my office connected to the hifi in the lounge. I use OmniRemote with a Powermid Remote Extender which sits on my desk behind the Palm cradle, with the receiver in my lounge pointing at the hifi. I now have complete control of my amp/tuner/multidisk-cd without having to leave the office, and I can leave all the original remotes in the lounge - excellent! <BR> Tim Morgan

What's the problem with the $20 registration fee folks?? Are you people nuts?!? Phillips and somebody else now make units which look almost identical to a Palm running OmniRemote (yeah, they have longer range) but they cost $400 or so!!! This application is great! Every other "learning" remote I've tried has had an extremely limited ability to learn codes and save macros. They also require you to remember what feature you programmed to what key. OmniRemote has allowed me to set up 5 different devices and I have several "one button" macros. One macro turns on the stereo, powers up the DVD, turns on the TV and switches to video, switches the sound system to surround and starts the movie. Another stops the movie, switches the stereo to tuner and sets it to a preset station - not surprisingly, I've labelled that button "intermission." A third resumes the movie. This app is great - just register the darned thing!! (Hell, it costs less than a dinner out or a movie for the family, and less than ANY decent learning remote - even if you include the cost of the Palm to begin with!!!)

Well I also initially blamed omniremote for a beaming problem, but found out that it was my friends machine not mine, I am happy with it but will not register untill it can work with my TIVO phillips remote. It acts like it learns but does not change the tivo amber light, but then I used afterburner at full speed and reprogrammed omniremote with the tivo and it worked a little bit away from the unit. but sucked the batteries dry with the IR and an overclocked CPU(I can use the tv and vcr from the couch. I am otherwise happy with the unit, but do not want to overclock the cpu to use it with my wonderfull awsome best device in the world, T i v o

I have the Visor HandSpring. i installed the beta and it worked great, but i noticed problems in other areas after the install. Example, when i attempted to beam my business card to a guy at Comdex, it froze, and i had to do a hard reset. When i tried to sync it with my NT machine at work, it said the port was already in use (or something similiar). i contacted their CS and got good feedback, and they would let me know when the Final Release came out. Until then, I cant afford to have it on my unit because it keeps freezing it, and i never seem to have a staple or papaerr clip around when i need one(the reset stick in the palm stylus is not long enough for the Visor incase you were thinking).
