This is one of the best program I have ever purchased! It works exactly as advertised. There is a wealth of information available. It takes an hour to figure out all the buttons and how it works, but in that amount of time you'll be able to know so much instantly. Truly amazing. As someone else said, it is a program that makes owning a Palm such a rewarding experience.

Every year or two there' one single event that makes your gadget worths more than their original value. When the US Govt decided to remove the SA (Selective Availability) from the GPS signals 5 years ago, every GPS unit on this world becomes more valuable, and now the only second thing I can think of with such an impact is Andreas Hofer's Planetarium. Very well done indeed, I can't think of any other better companion while camping! (Oh sure I need an Primus Multifuel too!)

I had always felt an interest in the stars and planets but frankly could only locate the Sun during the day and Moon at night. Then came Planetarium! I got my compass, so I could tell north from south, grabbed my Sony Clie, and went outside. With the help of Planetarium, I was immediately locating Saturn and Jupiter! I did'nt even know they could ever be seen with the naked eye, but there they were - right where Planetarium said they would be. I have waited a lot of years to finally be able to look at the night sky and say with confidence - there is Mars, Venus, Jupiter... GREAT Program. It exceeds expectations!

Great program. Has some features not on other PDA programs, like the compass view which allows one to find anything in the sky easily. Sky View is wonderful, including very easy zoom/change field of view. I agree with the comment re: no demo with 2sky - that is a real negative and not in the tradition of Palm programs. Plus, 2sky seems to nickel and dime you, charging $5 for night vision saver and significantly more $$$ for versions with more stars and objects.

I just purchased this product and can wholeheartedly recomend it to any others who find themselves on this page.
After locating the main players (in this area), I set about trying them.
Going by reviews, it was a toss-up between 2sky, Planetarium, and Astromist.
The choice was simple, Planetarium is complete, Astromist uses a wizards to tie together many seperate programs (never really new what icon did what??). 2sky never had a chance - I refuse to BUY a product, to see if it works on my unit.
If 2sky had a demo - I could comment...
There are some other good programs around too, search for PleiadAtlas or AstroInfo - both good programs.
All in all - Planetarium is worth every penny.

Greatest Program I have ever used... I have all the stars, comets, and objects installed, and the fact that it takes up 500k on my 2 megabyte Zire doesn't stop me. Runs well, and I can get the sky view loaded with all the objects, in 10 seconds, which is a great improvement over older versions, using the same files.
The option to enter custom objects also helps when I see things in magazines like Astronomy, that I'd like to star gaze at.
And when I have the money for a telescope, my choice will be influenced on the models supported by Planetarium.

Want to answer that age-old question "Daddy, what¿s that star up there?" from your open minded child, anytime? Well, I've been using Planetarium v1.9.4 since 2000 and love it... Even well after the kids are asleep. This tool is incredible: screen updates with Sidereal time; with nothing more than a hand held compass you can find an object; identify an unknown object; humbly show the kids how our world spins in the celestial sphere or what the sky looked like the moment they were born¿ I use it to teach my daughters constellations and the Zodiac ¿ a lifelong lesson. Whether you¿re using Binocs, an AltiAz, or trying to align that cumbersome polar mount, this tool is for you. I¿m glad the latest version lets you display a white on black star field. My old black on white display was tough to see at night and sometimes bothered my night vision. Probably most important, I still remember how quick and responsive the developer was to this back yard amateur¿s dumb e-mail questions about how to interpret all the displays. I¿m glad to see this application still is drawing new users. It still works with my OS 3.1 so I think I¿ll upgrade now¿ ;-)

This software package is the most useful observing accessory since Starbuck's coffee. At the touch of a pointer you can locate any deep sky object in the Messier, Caldwell, and Herschel 400 catalogs, as well as hundreds of notable double stars, asteroids, comets, 8 planets, and the moon. By "locate" I mean tap the "Find" icon in the Sky mode, make a selection, and instantly, a star map will appear with a telrad circle on the object. You can then zoom-in or out to find guide stars down to 8th magnitude. Conversely, tap on any object appearing in a star chart and it will be identified in the trough with useful data. . If that's not enough then create personal databases by entering RA and DEC. All the numerical and graphic info appears in red light to preserve you dark-adaptation. No more wasting valuable observing time squinting at dew-covered star charts with a red flashlight in your mouth. Instead of going back and forth to a star chart you can easily hold the Planetarium/PDA in one hand while telrading on mowing with the other. Once you find an object just slip the PDA in your pocket: it powers-down automatically. Plan your observing sessions in a memo and then import it as a database. Create an observing log at the telescope : write comments into a database, using Palm's handwriting translation software, and later upload it onto your PC. It's a great teaching tool for kids at star parties or for adults standing in line at Giant Eagle. If you want to know the phase of the moon and where Jupiter will be next Tuesday at 11:35 PM just call-up the calendar and enter the time. Another great thing is that a growing community of users are posting data files on the Planetarium web site. For instance, someone recently posted the entire the Mullaney Celestial Harvest 300+ object list on the Planetarium website download it for free. Although I am a dob user it appears that GoTo users can leave their laptops at home. They can connect a PDA to the serial port of a scope and control it with Planetarium. The high res capability of the new version 2.3.1 is very useful on a Palm Tungsten. The new sort feature (Name, position, magnitude and PA) for the databases was very useful on Messier Marthon night for creating an observing sequence (select objects, Messier, sort RA, export to memo, open new database, import memo as new database). Call me a fool, but I was glad to pay for the upgrade just to support the developer. The only thing I wish it could do if display the positions of Jupiter's and Saturn's moons, but that would take a lot of new code.

Andreas Hofer's Planetarium program is the A#1 reason I have purchased a palm pilot. The program is very accurate, and very user friendly, with a very intuitive user interface. The night sky on high-res palm pilots like mine appears almost photo-realistic, making it quite easy to recognize constellations even without the lines connecting the major stars. I don't know how I did without this great program, but it sure beats using printed star charts, and eliminates the need for a flashlight to consult a star chart while at my scope. Bravo to Andreas Hofer for coming up with this fine program!

First because the display *looks* like the night sky, not a mess of color balls. The constelations drawings make sense. The navigation is by far the best and more intuitive. Very easy to find whatever object you look for. And it´s getting even better, with the new 320X480 landscape T3 resolution. Did I mention the prompt and kind suport?
Kudos to Andreas!

Quite expensive but of professional standard; in my case it has replaced two desktop programs. The best feature is the outstanding user interface design. As well as the traditional sky view, showing stars, planets, asteroids, comets, nebulae, constellations, ecliptic, grids, horizon and everything else you would expect, with zoom between 2 and 180 degrees, there is an ingenious screen which draws a circle (showing planetary azimuths) and a semicircle (showing planetary altitudes) then puts other information relating to the selected planet inside the circle; thus a lot of Solar System data is displayed at a glance without clutter. You navigate between the two principal screens and others which show text-based information (ephemerides, rise/transit/set, show/hide asteroids/comets/nebulae, search ...) very simply using icons and the menu; in fact, the program is easier to use than any other desktop astronomy packages I've tried, which would seem almost an impossibility given the small screen!

It is truly an amazing sky chart program for the palm. You can display over 10000 deepsky objects, hundreds of asteroid and comets in real time.
You can add the asteroid and comet orbit data directly to the palm, then you can put them on the LCD display instantly.
Shapes of the planets and moon can be displayed, too.
I am no longer carrying the heavy and bulky star map or a PC with me. This program works as the star chart and "GOTO" controller as well.
The asteroid and comets data are updated constantly on the Web site so that you do not have to enter the recent orbit data.

A note of caution, the program offers a "night mode" which reddens the text and lines but the m505 bleeds a LOT of light around the edges of the screen (this might be fixed with a bit of shielding though).

I can't even get lost with this in my pocket, the Solar and Lunar compass is a great idea. I can't wait for the next release!

Excellent work. I use it since a few days and have already registered
it.
The graphic interface is quite intuitive and very well conceived
(actually better than any other astronomy program I have seen on PC or
Amiga). Lots of functions very well interlaced.
The author responded promptly to a query (the problem was a stupid
configuration mistake of mine).
It only takes 98kB of your Palm
memory.
The price is reasonable (19$).
The documentation is well done.
I wish every program for the Palm was this well conceived.

This is the first program I have registered for the Palm. Has more functionality then all the other astronomy programs combined in one easy to use interface. Definatly recomended.

Forgot to add one other thing....
This program coupled with the AvantGo channel called "This Week's Sky at a Glance" are the ultimate for the amateur astronomer.
Go to AvantGo.com and check the SciTech channels.

Shortly after receiving my Visor, I began wondering if there were any good astronomy applications out there. If there weren't, I was planning on taking a shot at it myself. After finding Planetarium, I can see that any effort on my part would be redundant. This is the first bit of Palm shareware I've found worth registering.
Thanks.

Terrific program. Shows a "live view" of the night sky with positions of 1600 brightest stars, constellations, Messier objects, the planets, Moon and Sun, predicts the rise/set of all the planets, Sun and Moon. Excellent for going outdoors to look at the sky and find various objects. Very good use of graphics. Easy to input with stylus.

Awesome and simply the best! Planets and constellations, moon and sun info - one(small) programm does it all. Look no further, save time, money & memory with this wonderful application.

Make no doubt about it - This program shows the true strengths of a Plam device. Mr. Hofer is a remarkable genuis and this program will make its mark as his coup-de-grace.
There are so many features, that even the casual or non-astronomer can make prevalent use of it.
Now, if you do happen to be a practising astronomer....you are in for a treat.
Don't delay - send in your money....you will not go home disappointed. MDB

Wonderful. This happens to be the first app
I've loaded onto my Palm III, and it's terrific. There's an extraordinary amount of information presented in a very accessible way, and it is both useful and great fun.
Highly recommended.

An absolutely great program! For an amateur stargazer like myself, this tool really helps find objects in the sky, watch the motion of the planets, and learn more about astronomy in general. My 8-year-old daughter has started studying astronomy and this tool has allowed us to learn together. I agree with another reviewer: this is one of the top ten Palm apps!

BRILLIANT !! It does much more than you'd think from the description above - zooming star maps with REAL TIME update, time advance rewind stepping, it has all the visible stars and messier objects and the best user interface I've seen for helping you actually identify where a body is in the sky. You can click on a star /planet to get a description of it and search for stars/constellations. It installs in one single file (unlike other multiple file insatllation programs). I have replaced 4 other astronomy programs with this single one which does all the things the others do (and does them Better !). BUY IT

The "swiss army-knife" for astronomers.
Mr. Spock should have this one on his tricorder ....

This is one of the few truly impressive applications I've ever seen for the PalmPilot. It is powerful, informative, educational, and just plain fun. This software is perfect for anyone with an interest in amateur astronomy or who simply looks at the night sky and wonders what he or she is looking at.

review ...
If you're lost in the desert in the middle of the night, and like many PalmPilot enthusiasts took your PDA along for the journey, then Andreas Hofer's Planetarium might become a valuable survival tool. Planetarium is an application that plots, maps and offers some unique, useful features for the avid astronomer to the beginner star gazer.
