Works Excellent most of the time, and Good the Rest.
However, I have placed an order through PalmGear, a few days ago, and am a bit nervous as I have not received my code, yet.
If I don't receive the code quickly I will up this rating to 5.
This application has a smaller footprint to Zlink, which does the similar stuff, but has a quarter of a megabite footprint, whilst Powerrun is around 60k.

A must for expanding internal memory, especially with larger memory cards. Add a gig or two to your internal memory
Leo Wang wrote at 11/30/2005
Great easy to use application which really frees up your memory. However, need to keep in mind that extension type programs cannot be moved. I guess that means programs which are constantly running cannot be moved to your card. It's not hard to figure out which apps cannot be moved, but those that you can move will save you a load of memory space.

I rarely write reviews, but having had my Zire 72 (and PowerRUN) for about a year now, I feel I can make an honest eval. As a Chiropractic student, I keep large pgms (like Netter's, Stedman's, and others) on my PDA, so memory is at a premium. I cannot fathom how other users do without PowerRUN! Heck, I am aready using a 1 Gig card (SanDisk, NOT Kingston, which gave me all sorts of trouble when recording lectures, even at 256K) and thinking of upgrading to a 2 Gig. Without PowerRUN my PDA would be just a nifty addressbook! Check out Dennis Essa's review, his directions enabled me run even MORE software off my card using PowerRUN (Diet Assitant's FOODs Db) and free up more hard drive!
In short - Great purchase, even if u only use it "infrequently." :)

To Alex Rollo (disappointed reviewer). PowerRun CAN solve this problem! The files that powerrun copies to the SD card are those that have the same "Creator ID" as the application you move to the SD. Some applications have a different "Creator ID" for their data files. In this case, you can manually move them, with say the free utilities, FileZ or FileProg, into the PowerRun directory on the card, e.g., Palm/Programs/PowerRUN/xxxx, where xxxx is the name of the program you told PowerRUN to move.
I hope that helps!
Alex Rollo wrote at 08/18/2005
It may well run a lot of good software from the SD card, but the two most important programmes, for me, Noah Lite and SmartDoc, do not run without their data being kept on the main memory. The dictionary for Noah takes up a valuable 2MB and all my doc files take up about the same but SmartDoc just will not recognise the memory card at all. Pity really, I was hopeful when I read the description and other reviews.

PowerRun is one of my essentail apps. You can install new applications to your device by simply creating a new directory in the PowerRUN directory and copying the necessary files to the new directory. Then just open PowerRun and tell it to update shortcuts. You can even some apps that need to syncronize to the SD Card using this! Not all work but many do. I use SplashID on the card and it synchronizes perfectly.

I came back to powerrun after a happy time with launcher_III, that managed everything well on my old TRGpro. But with increasing cardsize (256mb) and number of files and programs stuffed into the "memcardpalm launcher" folder (critical above >60-70 files and some large referrence files like lexicomp etc) the unit slows down significantly, e.g. when mobibook reader scans the memcard for readable files and documents. With PowerRun the palm/launcher folder is nearly empty again, except from those large databases and some selected programs. But be careful and make a backup before starting to move data to your memcard via Poverrun: some progs (e.g. pocketmoney, mcfile) did crash my device and i had one hard reset (problems always happen when i tried to move the file to memcard at the first time - once moving to card did succed, I had no further problems).

I use a great number of applications in my work and I'd never get them all into my Treo 600 without this app. I tried others but they failed on several occasions. It will run large applications like LondonTube (2.4mb) and AirportCodes (1mb, and who claim you can't run their app off a SD card). Show me another app that will run 106 applications off the card seamlessly and without a hitch and I'll buy you a beer!

PowerRun is quite simply one of the most useful and reliable programs you could have on your palmtop. It does very little- but the little it does is very important. What's more, I have never known it to crash or cause any problems. Effectively this program vastly expands the capacity of your palmtop and allows you to shift and store applications that you only occasionally use onto a memory card. Most can be run from that destination and those that do not can be effortless returned to the Palm's 'internal' when needed. PowerRun really is a must have application.
A little colour on the interface might be a cosmetic improvement worth considering.

Just purchased this product and I am very pleased! As a long time user of Palm products, I have always had a concern about the limitations imposed by the small amount of RAM and the limits it places on our ability to add applications. As a Real Estate Agent, I use several programs that require large amounts of data, such as Mapopolis, E-Key/Data, and Top Producer 7i Palm. I have had problems with HotSyncs due to the temporary data files required during the HotSync process by several of these applications overloading the available RAM. This application has allowed me to remove several of those programs that don't require daily updates and freed up enough RAM that this should no longer be a problem. My only concern, and a minor one at this point, is that according to the documentation, I can not use the card for any applications that need to HotSync data daily. Since TPP 7i stores a large amount of data, I was hoping this would run from the card also! But, I am pleased that I was able to free up enough RAM that I should not have to worry about updating those applications that have large databases any more.

The reviewer that previously said that there was no use for this application anymore obviously does not know what he is talking about. There are still MANY applications that will only allow you to run them from the device's ram. You cannot simply put the app on the memory card and launch it with certian programs. BUT, you can install the program to memory, then use this app to move it to the memory card, hence allowing the program to run. This program is a must have if you like to keep everything you install and have the space to do just that! Awesome.

I ran PowerRun back in the day before it was even possible to run apps off the memory card. But honestly, I don't understand why people still buy PowerRun when another program is only $5 more and you get a full launcher/themes/uninstaller/file manager/AND memory card launching ability. Even the native Palm OS 5.2 launcher runs apps off the memory card- all you need is a file manager to put them there.
PowerRun was great before other solutions existed, but honestly, it's not worth it any more.

Mostly pgms that need the PalmOS internal clock/timing settings should be left in RAM, on your Palm. I have over 8MB of Mapopolis Maps and they run completely from an SD Card, NOW!!!
Most others I've tried - have never been able to take such large PDB Files and run them flawlessly without a Hack. They would still use the Palm RAM as a buffer too, so you needed to allot for the size of the Data Files when running the App - or your Palm would Crash! I installed this and in one afternoon changed the entire structure of my pgm arrangements and my Zire72 is running super fast and plenty of space left to work with! Very stable and affordable APP!!! Isn't it annoying when companies like Sony, Handsprint, Palm, etc make their PDA devices and actually only put in 2Mb of memory? Well, ok, some of them are coming out in 4Mb, etc but still...why can't they implement, in one of the many models they release, a 64Mb PDA and be done with?
The answer, from them, is the memory in PDAs costs more (I beg to differ but that's me).
So the rest of us who have to suffer the consequences of poor design/commercial decisions must go out and get these external media devices such as SD cards and Sony Memory Sticks (using two of the most widely used external media formats as examples).
At first, these external media devices were great at storing MP3s, documents and screenshots of the digital family album. That's all they were good for...unless vendor specific (spelt proprietary) added in application execution support from them.
PowerRUN changes all that. Any palm device can now move applications off their overloaded Palm devices onto the external media cards, freeing up the Palm from memory crisis but also adding in a potentially whopping application memory space of 1Gb (+ the palm device's built-in memory).
I've moved almost everyone of my applications to the Sony Memory Stick now and its so well integrated with the Palm OS that I don't notice the beauty of PowerRUN except for the brief PowerRUN messages telling me its loading the application from my external storage.
The biggest gripe I have about it is that running large applications (and switching between applications) can be a costly exercise when it comes to the management of your PDA's power usage. Accessing an external media means the PDA must power up the external media drive to read/write data to it. It chews up your PDA's power much quicker than if you were playing Bejeweled all afternoon. But this is not the fault of PowerRUN's design. Its just one of those things you have to live with...for now or until someone makes a better, longer life battery.
The other gripe is that it doesn't work with all applications. But as I've moved all the applications I only occasionally used or the applications which chew up more than 300K, PowerRUN has already met its criteria in satisfying my thirst for more memory.
For those who can help, I would love to know how to move Avantgo across so that I can hotsync updates to Avantgo. Maybe the makers of PowerRUN is working on an update for that...my wishlist.
The only other minor gripe I have is if PowerRUN could just be modified to ask whether I want to delete the application on my external or internal device if I am trying to move an application that already resides there. e.g. when I upgrade an application version. Saves me from using the stylus anymore than I need to.

I just freed up 2.6MB additional memory on my Tungsten T and now for the first time, I can load large city maps for the GPS program that I use (DigiMap). Only my 256MB SD card sets the limit now, compared to aprox. 1 MB free memory before.
And I disagree with another review here; yes, certain launchers sometimes allow you to copy an application to your memory card, but the application has a database it needs to write to, this cannot be moved to the memory card or it will not work. PowerRun allows you to copy the complete application and will read and write to the database on memory card.
This is the best single utility I have installed!

I have removed it after finding this out. Not only can I launch my applications from my Memory Stick, but they run faster after removing them from PowerRUN.
Oh yes, one other thing, the marketing is not very swift. Yamada must be the only vendor that discourages customers from purchasing more than one of his applications. No matter how many you purchase, he will not offer a discount. Look at many of the great suites offered from $25-$45 and you can see that he would be smarter to be more customer friendly.

First of I must say this is a great program. It saves you alot of room on your PDA. It is a must have. I do find one problem with it though (I already talked to the author about this and he is going to fix it as soon as the programming product, CASL, upgrades to being able to program in OS 5 environment without mistakes). The problem I find is that it gives you a Fatal error after some time using it. It won't work correctly after that. So it doesn't work perfect with OS 5, but nevertheless when it does get fixed it is way well worth the money.

Very good product. Only thing holding it back is that some programs with a large number of databases (avantgo or smartlisttogo) are all or nothing affairs. One can either move all of the app (including data files) or nothing. Programs with fewer number of databases can have just the app moved. I'd like to do this with avantgo and smartlist to improve the load time of the applications and smartlist is very bad at seeing its dBs on a card.

This is definitely a must have program. One in a while you run into programs that are too good to be true-- this is one of them! I'm a very skeptical guy, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with program. If I were to advise anyone which program they NEEDED to have after they bought a new Palm device; PowerRun is the one to have!

Very simple to use. Just select the program that you want to move to Memory Stick (I use a Clie). Few seconds later, it's done, moved, and a shortcut is created in the launcher area.
The downside is that applications on the Memory Stick will take a much longer time to load, but this is in no way a PowerRun issue (it simply is the transfer speed limit of the Memory Stick slot). Another issue is a compatibility issue between PowerRun 1.2 and YiShow 5.2 (for Clie): Icons (shortcuts) that are (originally)black and white does not show up in YiShow anymore, and are just "blank" with App's name.
The two issues above doesn't bother me much (if at all). PowerRun itself is a great piece of software and does exactly what it says it does.

Tell you what, I actually freed 4.6MB from my Sony Clie T665C. YES, 4.6MB, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!! Wow, that's great and it works very well with programs that changes their databases often. The changes made are saved back to the card with no problems, which should in theory. And it also shows you the estimated launch time required if put into card so you can decide what to put onto the card. All in all, this is the best, better than PiDirect or any others!!! Go get it, you won't regret!!! : )

nice prog. - especially because of moving the complete applications to the card (compared to laucherIII 3.05: with my favourite 750kb dictionary launcher only gets the 20kb-application moved to the card and the 720kb databes is left in ram)
unfortunately with handera330 (palmos3.5x) any application moved to the card by powerrun seems to take much more space in ram than the original file has. so some large databases/applications doesn't work or it takes really a long time to be moved from card to ram (e.g. with epocrates). so for theese my "problem"-applications i still have to continue using msmount.

The ability to start the programs on the memory stick from the main application selection lets me use TealLaunch with any program I like. At least one launcher has a similar capability, but with PowerRun I can use any launcher I like, which I prefer.

This is truly an excellent piece of software even though it could use a few improvements. There are a couple of programs that will not run properly when used with PowerRUN (such as Netwalk II from Beiks - it does not save game progress) and it does not support conduits to work for those programs stored on the card (but that is understandable). What I would really like to see is some kind of progress indicator (like a loading bar or a % counter) so you know it's working, sometimes it feels like my Palm has frozen when using rather large applications. A minor issue that needs to be fixed, I am not sure if this is SilverScreen specific, is a problem that can occur when upgrading software. If, for instance, I move an app back to RAM, hotsync a new version over it and move it back to the card, whenever my launcher tries to view that program's icon it freezes and I need to do a soft reset. When the Palm has been reset it reads the icon just fine.

THIS is the reason I bought my m125 in the first place! I run this with Silver Screen and have not had any {knock on wood} soft reset issues.

Four-and-a-half stars. I use PowerRun on my Palm m505 with SilverScreen. When first installing this program, I experienced a few soft resets caused by a variety of factors. These crashes do not happen so frequently now, but I still have to perform the odd soft reset when returning to the application screen, having just moved a program to the SD card.<BR>
This aside, PowerRun is still a very capable and impressive program that is certainly worth registering. Before installing PowerRun, I had just 300k memory on my m505. I now have over 3MB free. A possible improvement, however, would be the ability to run programs that have conduits, as some of my most memory-hogging applications use conduits. Speed improvements would also be most welcome. In conclusion, PowerRun has in effect just added 64MB extra memory to my m505. And for $15 (UK£12), you'd be mad not to purchase this excellent application.

Nice program, however with new launchers like launcherIII this app has little added value, since moving apps and databases back and forth to a card is integrated. Better jet, it can be done by one single move without opening powerrun first. The advantage of powerrun over e.g. the built-in function of launcherIII is that is indicates the loading time when the app is loaded from card.
Amin Sabet wrote at 12/13/2001
Very nice work. The major advantage of this over PiDirect and MSMount is that PowerRUN works with databases that are changing, whereas those other apps only work with read-only databases. Other advantages of PowerRUN is its ease of use, semaless integration into third-party launchers, etc. Have I ever come across a bug? Yes. However, no one else has made anything which can touch this, so I give PowerRUN 5 stars.
Tom Bridgman wrote at 11/09/2001
A very nice app, but not well suited for the Handera 330: PowerRun supports only one installed memory card, but the Handera has both a CF and SD slot. With memory cards installed in both, PowerRun insists you remove the unused one so you can install files. Once files have been installed to the SD card, PowerRun won't see them if the CF card is installed -- it tells you to replace the CF volume with the SD volume.
Another annoyance is the inability to move data files that don't have the same creator as the application. Case in point: Noah Lite's dictionaries. If you use PowerRun to move the application, then manually copy the databases to the right directory, it works, but the app should have some way to let me specify what databases to associate with the app.
One final nit: PowerRun requires you name your cards, and it allows spaces and special characters to be used. However, it's just using the volume label to store the name, so "Doc Files 1" gets munged to "DOCFIL~1" -- not terribly intuitive. It would help if PowerRun would should you what the resulting name will be rather than letting you assume the card was named as you specified.

Disadv: a bit too slow launcher prog.

It works well with sony clie. I have tried mcFile, piDirect and I like PowerRun the best. It is much easier to use compare to the previous two, i.e. you don't have to go thru a list of .prc files and .pdb files to figure out what to move to the memory stick or where to move to on the memory stick. You just need to pick an application to move, PowerRun hides all the detail information from the user. Although piDirect is little faster compare to PowerRun but when loading an application, PowerRun popups a loading window, as with piDirect, it seems like the program just hangs which could be confusing and user would tend to click on the icon again.

I'm very frustrated with this program --using a Handera 330-- which the developer claims is compatibile. It is not at all compatible on my H330 and caused multiple fatal errors when trying to run. Worse, it became nearly impossible to delete, as somehow the file became corrupted or was otherwise set as a resource database by the application. Handera 330 users, just use AutoCF and save yourself the grief. Lack of documentation in English is totally unacceptable.

Just registered after trying it out for a week... note to John: while it *would* be great for PowerRun to be able to support files larger than your device's RAM, this is really not PowerRun's fault -- programs must be in RAM to be run. But I agree that it would be great if you could install directly to the card and have it work via PowerRun. Possibly a PowerRun install program could handle this in the future? I'm giving this a "good" rating rather than "excellent" because although I find the current version of PR to be indispensable, (1) I often (daily?) have errors requiring a soft reset (not sure if this is PR's fault or Silver Screen's fault), and (2) I can no longer go four or five days between recharges on my m505... but it's worth the small hassle of daily charging. Finally that 64MB MMC card I bought just after getting my m505 is being put to good use!

I was initially excited about the features and usability of Powerrun. It was useful in that it creates shortcuts for files in SD. And the useful feature of informing users how long it takes to move a file to RAM. So why 2 stars? The reason most of us buy a SD or MMC card is to store files, especially large files in those cards. Powerrun can't recognize a file installed straight from desktop to SD/MMC. Files have to be installed in RAM, then move to the cards. So, how I a install a 9Mb file when my Palm only has 8Mb? Even if I have 6 Mb left on RAM, it won't allow me to install a 3Mb file. So, beware to that before you buy this software.
Hopefully the author will address is feature soon.

The expansion card support that came with the Palm was truly sorry (for example, it would move Mapopolis to the internal memory, but leave the maps on the expansion card which didn't work). Powerrun fixed this kind of problem, puts "shortcuts" on the launcher that Silverscreen 2.0 can see, and allows for much better management of expansion card apps (move, delete, beam...). EXCELLENT software that I registered within an hour of downloading!

This is an update to my previous review. Sony's HiRes function and PowerRUN is NOT compatible, but you can use SwitchDash instead of the Sony's HiRes function. When you use SwitchDash, make sure the HiRes function is turned off in the pref screen. Hopefully, PowerRUN will support the Sony's HiRes function in the future releases, but for now PowerRUN works beautifully with SwitchDash.
Here's what I received from their tech support:
"Thank you for the information. Yes, PowerRUN and Sony's HiRes
function is not compatible. You can use SwitchDash (

I'm testing this on my Sony Clie 710. The program works beautifully, except for one major problem if you're using it with a Clie. When I run my Clie in hires mode, some applications do not display correctly. For these applications, I can mark them as low res only in the preference screen. Unfortunately, if one of these applications is running from the memory stick, I can only mark the shortcut as low res only. So, when the real application is copied to the internal mem, Clie doesn't know to run it in low res.
I've sent an email to tech support, but no response from them.

I have a Sony CLIE S300 and this is a dream come true. With my 64MG memory stick I can now run programs from the stick and conserve the precious internal memory. It works great for any application that is self contained - i.e. any program that does not have to update its files each time it runs - such as games, etc. When you move the application to the Memory Stick, PowerRun takes all the related files. This means that you can move programs with multiple files. I have also found that I can use my SONY digital camera connected to my desktop computer to add files or take files from the PowerRun folder, letting me modify what is and is not loaded when I run the application. It should be standard equipment on every CLIE!

PowerRUN lets you place the card's application short cut icons in any of your regular folders, find it faster and run it faster. Works great!

Absolutely Incredible! There are simply not enough stars to indicate the importance of this program to m505 owners like myself. In reading some of the reviews, I thought it would be impossible to figure out, but it was totallt intuitive and if there's a serious conflict, I've nott yet found it.
I simply activated PowerrRUN, moved 15 programs (totalling 800+k) to my 64MB card and held my breath. I stayed away from programs dependant upon dynamic databases and not only did every program execute flawlessly using the PowerRUN command, they ran perfectly, from their Silver Screen 2.0 icons. The only minor glitch was that the Silver Screen icons became "unfilled" and that took just seconds to remedy. By the time I had finished, I had moved more than 2mb of executable prc's to my card.
15 minutes after I downloaded the shareware, I was back here, paying the registration fee; a bargain as I see it.

This is an excellent app, and I would have given it 5 stars if it had warnings on what it shouldn't be used with. If you have a palm with an SD slot get this app ? you need it! It works with other launchers (SilverScreen etc) and is easy to use. BUT BE WARNED: Do NOT move apps that use conduits (AvantGo etc.) the conduit expects databases to be available when they won't be, expect weirdness. Do NOT move apps that act as launchers (DocumentsToGo etc.) the launch is aborted when the app is placed back in the SD. Do NOT move apps that hack the OS (QuickBits etc.) just don't go there ? just don't. I would also be careful of apps that set alarms (DateBk, BackupVFS, etc). Don't get me wrong this really is a great app ? just be aware of what should not be moved.

This Application is an absolute must for all those Palm OS handhelds that wish to store data on external cards, and save internal memory.
Shortcuts are created that can be categorised like any internal memory application. These, when clicked on automatically launch the App from the external memory.
The shortcuts even remember which external card the actual app is stored on, and prompts you to put the correct card in the expansion slot.

This is a truly IMPRESSIVE application. Don't let the simplistic description deceive you. I wasn't expecting such a creative development approach for an early-generation VFS launcher application.
This application allows you to "move" an application and corresponding data to an SD or MMC card. This data is stored on the card, but a windows-like "shortcut" is created in your regular application group.
This shortcut technique is truly marvelous, because you can use the existing launcher, or other launchers (I'm guessing, but I have not verified.)
Flash cards are not as speedy as RAM. There's no way around this, but Mr. Tatsushi shows you how long it will take to launch the application from flash.
How is an application AND data launched from flash? When you hit the shortcut in the program lancher, it loads the data from flash, and writes it back out to flash when the application closes. The data is portable with the card, and does not reside in main memory. I verified this with VFS utilities.
I only downloaded this utility because I was desperate. I didn't realize how much creative functionality was packed into this program.
