Nice launcher, but since it does not support the 480x320 landscape mode of my Tapwave Zodiac, it's basically useless.

Have always loved this program on my old Kyocera 7135. It is now on my new Treo650. Loving it more for the HI-RES. Working great! Recommend it to anyone wanting to use this, particularly on the new Treo650's. I also had changed my ID and the response from PocketSensei was quick and helped me work through this issue. Cannot imagine my using this phone without this. Also, I'm using the background for Vista on my phone wallpaper as well. People just stare at it, wondering why my phone looks so good. SilverScreen 3.4.1 is why. An eye-popper. Well, I'm a visual kind of guy, and this is as visual as things get! Try it, you will most likely buy it. Make sure you stay current on versions. For those who indicate that its "bloated", well, anything this visual is going to increase its size. Use it on a newer PDA or smartphone with larger memory. Its this improved memory that have allowed programs like SilverScreen to improve our visual lives.

Forgive the multiple posts, but the developer did contact me. I think this is important information that SS users need to know, and I have not found it elsewhere. The message from PocketSensei follows --
The main change to SilverScreen is that it is now one piece. There is no longer an os5.pdb required. The total size for OS5 users has decreased from what it was previously.
A top customer request was to make SilverScreen easier to install and so we have responded by making fewer pieces available. All Tungsten, Zire, Treo users can now install one piece and use less memory overall. We have also made a number of performance improvements for Treo users.
Clie users do not get this benefit, but we have maintained Clie support by making the sony_os4.pdb available separately. There are not any significant benefits to make 3.4 worth upgrading to as a Clie user. It is not necessary for you to upgrade.
Mike Bowling wrote at 06/08/2005
Purchased Silverscreen for both my Clies a while back, and I really like 3.3. But, this release appears to be majorly different from others, and the documentation doesn't reflect that. For instance, the silver.prc install in 3.3 was just over 500kb; the 3.4 install is over 1 meg, plus we're told in the readme that we Sony users still need to download the old Sony_os4.pdb. Despite the 500k-plus increase in size, all readme files seem to indicate the minimum space requirement for Silverscreen still is between 200k and 500k. Is it worth the bloat? Not sure...I think we need more info from the developer along with updated readme files before upgrading.

due to my treo 600 160x160, i've been using silverscreen as its simpler interface. But now i got my TE2, silverscreen+TE2 is just a BIG mess. some 1-10% of my programs, i'll have to exit silverscreen before i can access them, because they just won't show up in silverscreen! (even after soft reset or store the program on SD card). And 30% of my application's icon are mixed up (ptunes with tealDoc icon etc.)
Ruba Ducky wrote at 05/16/2005
I came this close to purchasing this program. I really had high hopes for it.
I've been a Palm user for over 5 years, and each time I bought a newer PDA, I considered getting Silverscreen. I now own a Tungsten E2, and I must say that after all these years, all the rave reviews must have really blinded Pocketsensei into believing they were doing the right thing.
I'm sorry, but they're not.
The look and feel options are great. I like the ability to add a custom theme, background image, or different icon. I love the drag-and-drop interface. It's essentially what Palm is still missing. That's where my raving stops.
For a program so acclaimed for having a ton of eye-candy customisation options, it's disguisting to see that some of these main features are broken, or do not work.
Soft resets occasionally remove the background image, which has to be re-installed from a memory card again (?).
Icons which are changed CANNOT be replaced back to their original state, even though the supplied documentation says otherwise (!). There's not even an undo option, or cancel button anywhere in the icon change screen. Once dragged, that's the way it stays - and even the built-in launcher shows it. The only thing left is to re-install the app from scratch.
The overall interface is alright. It's as intuitive as Palm could get their interface to be. The amount of tools offered is still anorexic though. I still feel that I'm using one of the first Silverscreen versions on my IIIxe.
It's sad to see that all the R&D went into the look and feel of this app, and it's still broken!
Essentially this app needs some new software management to pull it out of the hole it's stuck in.

I really like what SilverScreen has done so far but it still hasn't convinced me that I should change from the competition.
I think the thing that would sell me is if the ticker tapes had more "dynamic content". If I could see content such as stock prices, weather and RSS news without going to other apps then it would sell me.
Arnold Marrow wrote at 04/02/2005
I use the ticker feature 24/7 to stay on top of sports schedules and holidays. The graphics are superior in every respect and the animated icons are killer. Best of all its simple to set up and can launch apps faster than anything else I've tried.
James Reidart wrote at 04/02/2005
Still the best of the pack. While others have become bloated with additional utilities that are already included on most new Palm models SilverScreen continues to focus on what it has always done best--launch applications with the best looking desktop available.

I tried several launchers before purchasing and this one was the easiest to navigate and seems to have the best selection of themes/backdrops (if thats what you get it for). Some of the other launcers I found to be a bit overwhelming, just too many things going on! If your looking for a simple launcher this is the way to go! Very nicely done! Thanks!

I really DID like it though. Now I love another program.
Nine Rogers wrote at 01/21/2005
Unfortunately, the makers of Silverscreen appear to have rather lost the plot when compared to other launchers. I was a Silverscreen user for years, until Pocketsensei decided that the rather pointless and 'battery-eating-due-to-screen-refresh rate' function of 'animated icons' was the new MUST-have feature - rather than better file management, better use of memory, better card integration and a launcher more suited to keeping up with the more powerful specifications of others. I have recently switched to a different launcher from PalmGear (think the last letter of the alphabet) and am much, MUCH happier.

Poor replacement launcher. Does not launch memory card applications as quickly as other launchers and databases must be stored in RAM. Just fancy JPEG images for background. Not much more. Uses alot of memory 2.8mb on my T3. I tried another program and it offers more for the price, plus fully supports memory card applications and databases.

As a migrant from another launcher, which has disillusioned me by its recent development and what appears to have been a lapse in ethics, I am very happy with Silverscreen and impressed with the great thought that has clearly gone into it.
Seeing the comment below about economy of resources, I realise that there is probably a trade-off for high graphics. At the same time I hope that Pocket Sensai will bear economy of memory etc. in mind with their future developments. This will no doubt keep users with future ageing handhelds happy where sometimes the trend among programmers is towards bloat and leaving some loyal customers behind in the process, because they cannot affort the latest models of handheld. If the programmers can manage this I look forward to many future years of service from this program.
Incidentally, in fairness to Pocketsensai, Kyle seems to have missed their promise to supply the free registration for the extra theme on the 21st of July. I am sure that they will be honouring that.
I wish Pocketsensai all the very best for the future.

I've had this since version 1.0 and couldn't be happier (well, okay it would be nice if the saluting girl was included in the standard download!). SilverScreen was even included on the Palm display in the tech museum display in Rotterdam which I thought was appropriate since it makes the little Palm screen into a mini-masterpiece of art and intuitive function.
Shawn B wrote at 05/09/2004
I think the graphics are second to none. The speed is up to par with every other launcher (in RAM), the price is not too high, what kills this app in my humble opinion is the HUGE MASSIVE chunk of memory required to run this app. Granted it has some capabilites of Card storage (which slows it down a bit), but it is excessive. This is overdone. Lets just launch our applications and perform some utilitarian tasks with conservation.
This is definitely not the "green" launcher, it sucks alot of energy from the palm.
Greg Portman wrote at 05/08/2004

I actually prefer the SS method of handling the expansion card over other launchers that see apps on the card as separate items and do not allow for categorizing them alongside the apps on the device. I would like to see other filetypes other than apps listed in the icon view for things like images and maybe even mp3s.
morten bjoernsvik wrote at 04/16/2004

You need a universal filemanager where you can probe all memory, view all .prc, .pdb and general files like .jpg, .doc etc.

For a long time I had dismissed this as just a skin thing. Yesterday on a whim I downloaded it and found three things my Zire 71 lacked and I wanted, mini icons so I don't have to scroll down, being able to sort everything on the SD card to categories so no more searching through 1001 icons and moving programs from handheld to card and back again in only two taps.
The pretty penguin screen is just a bonus.

After trying other launchers out there i am happy with this as the 5th best launcher. Very nice themes though along with the ticker idea. I do believe that it needs real card intigration like other launchers out there before I can be more satisfied with this launcher. I would also like to see some updates with more New functions. Other then that it is a descent launcher. keep up the good work SS. I would give this a lower rating for the lack of true card support and other functions but since, for some reason, one cannot choose a lower rating (this site) then 4 stars on Silver Screen then I am forced to pick 4stars (or higher)! Wow!

I have no idea what other reviewers are talking about when they claim something is blocky about the design. SilverScreen has always had the best looking interface of any launcher (see PalmUser, HandheldMedia Magazine, Wired and other reviews that hold this to be the case also). I have been a graphic artist for 17 plus years but would encourage anyone to compare SS side by side with any of the other launchers to see for themselves.

As for this launcher being "The King" or the "best" on either side of the Atlantic I would disagree. I do believe though that it is a nice "LOOKING" launcher in terms of eye candy (Except for the BIG interface buttons which I find quite primative. They just take up too much room). And I do belive that the makers of SilverScreen know how to advertise and inflate their product, but I wasn't as happy with it as with other launchers out there. At least it works compared to Facer and it's not as boring as LaunchEm. But I do believe it needs a more sophisticated look. Keep the eye candy though! I love the ticker :) Though I do believe it needs to take up LESS screen to look more professional then just a blocky toy. It works perfect on my NX! That I appreciate. It does need more options though. But if you're only looking for eyecandy and simplicity then it isn't that bad of a launcher (a big foot print though). I for the most part like sophistication, customization, and more options. Other then that it is a great launcher. I give it 3 stars.
Jeremiah Dennett wrote at 03/02/2004
I gave this Launcher a try and I really like that one has choices on what scroll bars to use (can one design their own and replace the built in ones instead?) and the icon sets are swift. I think the upper portion of the Launcher looks clean and very nice. I also like the small animation on the upper right hand and upper left hand side of the app and the ticker is pretty cool. And it's great how easy it is to put apps in different categories. I do believe though that the lower bar looks veryyy clumpy and large (like it was made only for the visually impaired) and there isn't enough customization or options in the menu for my own personal needs. It also needs to be more tecky with wayyyy more options before I could by a launcher like silver screen. The price is way to expensive for such a simple and blocky app (considering the other launchers out there). Do to the clutter and lack of options, I give this launcher only 3 stars.

I keep coming back to the king because every other launcher is just too cluttered or techie. With the ticker tapes SilverScreen is head and shoulders beyond the others in terms of eye candy. I use the Vocab builder ticker all the time on the subway to work and the Movie Quotz ticker on the way home. Okay so I'm a sucker for trivia... Bottom line is SilverScreen just plain looks better and is more fun to use than anything else out there.

I has bought a discount launcher before but quit using it after a couple of weeks because I could never figure out how to make half the features work. SilverScreen is the only launcher I have found that allows Card items to be categorized along side the apps resident on my device so I can have all Games stored in my Games folder and not have to go searching all over to find them. I've been a long time fan of SS. But since a while my love for this launcher is over. It uses huge amounts of memory. It's support of landscape (Sony Clie UX50) is a laugh. Support of external memory still is not stable. And the functionality that has been added over the past year is not impressive.
For less $ more powerfull and straightforward launchers are available.
Mike Bowling wrote at 01/19/2004
Mixed feelings....Bought SS on sale for my Clie. The hi-rez Sony version looks crisp but sort of plain to be taking up 1.5 megs with only two themes (including the default Sony theme that you *must* install to get hi-rez on a Clie). It's functional but doesn't allow some handy things like arranging the icons the way you want (ie, out of alphabetical order in a category). Also, only OS5 can handle the pretty backgrounds, and the OS4 icons are jaggy with no real hi-rez look. This shouldn't be, as other launchers (like ZLauncher) are now substituting hi-rez icons and backgrounds in OS4. Memory card support is there, but again, it's not as intuitive to use as some other launchers.
Overall, 20 bucks still seems like too much money for too much bloat and not enough functionality, especially if you're not using Palm OS5. I'll continue to use SilverScreen for a while since I already paid for it, but might likely wind up deleting it and going with another launcher.

It generallyworks as advertised. However, with the number of applications I have (about 125) on my Sony Clie t665, the database takes up 1.5 MEGs of RAM. Way too much memory used up for a launcher. I've gone back to the competitor, which uses 500K, including the app.

I love the simplicity of this program. It dresses up the OS 'just enough' while giving you function and practicality at the same time. I could not stand the overabundance of 'crap' some of the other popular launchers give. Too mcuh on the screen annoys me and is not helpful! And it looks bad on top of it! So this program is great.
One thing I am VERY dissapointed with, is the LACK OF THEMES. Especially lack of GOOD HIGH-RES high quality themes. With this many downloads you would think there'd be betters election. And the ones I do find, are usually low-res or do not look that refined, elegant, or 'clean' - they tend to look grainy, pixelated, or just too messy or cheesy. MORE NICE THEMES PLEASE! I like the TAURUS theme and Vista theme on their home page...

SilverScreen runs very well on my Zire 71 and makes good use of the Zire 71's excellent color screen. My favorite feature is the small icons that allow the user to see all the apps in a category without scrolling, using five columns instead of the Palm OS default of two columns in small icon mode. I also like being able to use different themes, but I've settled on "Classic" because it is simple and attractive without being "cutesy" or silly. One of these days I'll make my own theme and be even happier with it. I don't use a background pic or the Ticker, but the most recently used app menu (little arrow in the upper right corner) is great. The biggest problems I see with it is that it takes up 2MB of my precious memory - if not for that I would give it a five-star "excellent" rating.

I originally purchased SilverScreen back in the 1.x days. It ran too slowly on the PDA I had then (a Treo 180g), so I deleted it.
Well, I recently bought the Treo 600, and saw that SilverScreen had gone through several revisions. They offered an upgrade special, so I figured I'd give it another try.
Several observations caused me to conclude that I am better off with the native OS launcher (these are based solely on SilverScreen running on my Treo 600):
1. 5-way navigator button - does not work in SilverScreen. I've read that it does work on other devices, but it doesn't on the Treo 600.
2. Phone app - I have had my Treo 600 for over a month, and have not had any problems with the phone. After installing SilverScreen, and during my second outgoing call, my screen went completely blank. I was able to go back to the phone dial menu and successfully make a call. Call it coincidence, but since uninstalling SilverScreen, I have not had any further problems with my phone functionality.
3. Still sluggish - after hanging up from a phone call one time, I hit the home button and got a "please wait" graphic which lasted about 3 seconds before I was at the SilverScreen app launcher again. In the (expensively) instant-gratitude world of PDA computing (especially with Treo 600's new 144 Mhz ARM processor vs. the old 33 Mhz processor in the Treo 270/300 and earlier models), this is completely unacceptable.
4. Background - The Treo 600 (or it may be Palm OS 5), allows you to customize the background colors (e.g., dialog boxes, title/menu tabs, etc.). I had selected the "Steel" scheme prior to installing SilverScreen. Once I installed SilverScreen, there was a grey-ish grid separating each app icon on the launcher page. I recognize that this was the Steel scheme background color, and SilverScreen was picking up this background color in between the icons (which have a white background surrounding the icon). A minor issue, but it did make the launcher screen look shoddy.
5. The Ticker - when I clicked on an appointment displayed on the Ticker, it took me to the Phone dialer screen (i.e., not the Calendar, or even better, the actual appointment I clicked on in the Ticker).
6. Background picture - a background picture must be specifically sized in order for it to appear correctly on the launcher screen (i.e., to a pixel width of 320, and a length of at least 320 for a Treo 600, otherwise, the bottom portion of the background on the launcher screen is white, which looks kind of cheesy). If you don't take the time to resize all the pictures you would want to use as backgrounds (e.g., maintain 2 versions of each picture), the picture(s) will get truncated to the top left portion of the picture. Additionally, you can only select background pictures from the SD card. So, you would have to install *all* the background pictures you might want to use to *every* SD card!
----------------------------------------------
While SilverScreen does offer a handsome UI, and some uniquely beneficial functionality (e.g., quick app info and beaming, most recently visited apps, and themes), the cons outweighed the pros for me. I'll stick with the native OS launcher, but will definitely stay tuned for future developments.

The review from scott gardner has a rather big mistake in it, as well as some things that made me wonder if he thought about what he was saying.
First, the mistake -- Silver Screen *DOES* support the 5-way navigator. Pressing left and right (in 3.1+) changes the category. Clicking it switches to a mode where an icon is selected -- at that point it works just the way the built-in front-end works (up-down-left-right to highlight the icon you want, click to select).
Then, the thing that makes no sense -- he complains about having to resize an image (which is clearly explained in the docs) at the same time he complains about speed. So what he really wants to do is SLOW DOWN the app further by making it resize the image for him every time he goes to the launcher? He needs to make up his mind as to what matters. Resizing an image so it fits the necessary space isn't difficult or time consuming, and the payoff is worth it.
Silver Screen isn't for everybody -- it is slower than the built-in launcher, but on my Zire71 the speed decrease is barely noticable. It doesn't have as many icons as some other third-party launchers, but the clean interface is much more attractive and intuitive. I've been using it since 1.0, and while some new features have been of questionable value (I'm still confused about what the heck the ticker or the "pix" is useful for), for the most part it's only improved over the years.
Jonathan Choo wrote at 10/16/2003
Actually on the T3 it does support 320x480. You have to download the latest version of Silverscreen. The only buggy thing about Silverscreen is sometimes some of my apps gets misplaced back to the Unfiled category. It only happens once in a while and does not bother me much but it is something to be fixed. Also I hope the developer includes hi-res fonts and include the ability to use landscape backgrounds.
Chad O'Neil wrote at 09/26/2003
Gotta love the theme selection. SilverScreen is off the charts with customization! The interface is striaght forward like the Palm's but with additional power just a tap away. Perfect combo of great looks and features. It would be neat to see a theme based on the Underworld flick.

Simply the best Palm-App I've ever come across!!!

I love being able to get the daily TV schedule on the ticker in this new version. Now I never forget when to catch Temptation Island or Who Wants to Marry My Dad! The default theme with the retro-metallic look and the pinup girl is about the sweetest looking thing I have ever seen on a PDA. I have had more people ask me how I got the tricked out Palm than I can remember. The cool factor alone of SilverScreen deserves 10 stars.

This product is high on graphical interface however low on launching most of my applications from the memory stick. Out of 16MB of internal memory, I dropped down to 485KB because not all my applications would run on memory stick using Silver Screen as the launcher. The difficulty is that the application launches however the database can't be found. I ended up purchasing "PowerRun" to launch both the application and data so that it worked as though it was on internal memory.

I purchased this for my Tungsten C and its worked flawlessly since. it also makes tasks alot easier to do such as deleting files, etc. i dont have Zlauncher but that program looks too crammed to me. Silver Screen is nice with awesome graphics for newer models. skins are very inexpensive and i love using windows XP and mac X skins. very cool!

I am an OS4 user with a palm m505, but am not bothered by backgrounds etc as per previous reviewers. True, there is little change worthy of the $9.99 investment, but I will be paying it for one reason only.... The new Silverscreen theme. This mirrors OS5 icons and therefore makes my somewhat dated but much loved m505 at least look equal to a Tungsten, display wise (ignoring lack of hi res), making it feel a lot more modern than it is and helping me fight my desire to spend hundreds on a T or Zire71. Would like to see a password lock for hidden icons as per rival launcers though.

I am a Sony T615 Clie user and have been a register user of Silver Screen since 2.0V. I am some what disappointed with the new version 3 Silver Screen because of 3 reasons. One, the size of silver screen seem much large than in version 2.9. Two, the backdrop do not work on a Sony T615 but on the other Launcher (name of other launcher handled) does support backdrops, and three the most important one to me is that the Sony memory stick which I use for running programs is buggy and not working properly as it did in version 2.9.
But I am still some what of a fan to Silver Screen even though I do not like this version 3.0 vs. 2.9. That is why I still gave it a fair rating. If they would fix the memory stick bug I would rate good.
Jay Patel wrote at 07/26/2003
The previous reviewer is trying to use Pix intended for the pop-up pix sheet as backdrops. The backdrops are in the OS5 folder of the theme downloads and cover the entire screen even in hi-res extended mode (320x480). And, I might add, they are gorgeous and complement each theme perfectly. Also with regards to the previous review SilverScreen has ALWAYS had the ability to delete individual themes on any device. You simply use the expander button in the List view and you can find all your themes under the heading Silver Data. Any ones you wish to dispose of can simply be dragged to the trash.
Bob Lahmeyer wrote at 07/25/2003
A pleasant upgrade for OS5 owners as you can now add a backdrop to enhance the appearance. The included pics are a waste as they only encompass the top 1/3 of the screen. You would be better off importing your own GIF's or JPEG's as I did.
As far as owners of OS 4.1 or less are concerned, you don't get anything more than SilverScreen 2.XX. No backdrops can be found here. Also, the authors have still not found time to add a utility to remove individual themes without removing the whole program. Sony users know that this is possible using MS gate or Clie files. Even Handspring Prism users can delete themes with file mover. If you have a Palm handheld, well, you are currently out of luck. I was expecting so much more from this latest edition. Maybe future upgrades will allow better background support. After all, the competition is doing this already. Still a very stable app that deserves consideration when compared to other launchers.
Finnian Riley wrote at 07/24/2003
Okay, for all those who tout this launcher or that for their advanced features, I say this: IMO there is no launcher with the cool factor this thing now has! Between the slick animations and the funky sounds, this is the most fun I've had with my Palm since I bought it. Who knew launching apps could be so much fun? I only hope Palm takes some cues from this product for the OS 6 interface! Sorry to gush, I just really dig this software.
Tim O'Neil wrote at 07/24/2003
I had been using one of the competitors for years and decided to give SS a spin as it is the overwhelming choice in my office. Well, now I am hooked too. The new ticker is the best tool I have come across on my Palm. Period. How cool is it to be fed the day's financial news and tv listings without lifting a finger. The animation and sound effects are pretty amazing too and add a dimension that no other Palm software seems to have. I really hope they plan to support landscape mode as I plan to buy one of the new Clies that was announced. Anyway, bravo for a superior product in every regard.

Silverscreen 3.0 is beautiful to look at, but inefficient and surprisingly still missing some basic features. It's hard to believe that version 3.0 still does not provide "live scrolling" when you drag the scroll bar. I'm so use to that on my Mac and find it akward when it's missing. The possibly never to be updated again LauncherX still provides many more features with a much more efficient (if not as pretty) interface.

I like the Silverscreen launcher compared to most other's on the market and believe you me that I have tried em all. But Silverscreen still looks good on an m515. One gripe that I've had with it though that since they started supporting VFS, they didn't work in PiDirect support, everytime the system resets, I lose all my PiDirect categories and running a file manager with PiDirect based programs screws up all my icons. Hope to see a fix on it soon.

I have used Silver Screen for such a long time. I am extremely happy with this program. Palm would not be the same without it. However, pocketsensei needs to come out with more free themes. The free themes are what is making silver screen great. Stop trying to make more money from the themes. Great program though. Nothing compares to it.

I love this program. In almost all other Launchers the screen gets so cluttered with buttons that you dont know what they do and rarley use them. The simple 4 different buttons provieds all the functionality I need. With the mutiple themes and the cpaibilitys to make your own, I change the theme about everyweek. This keeps it from feeling old which most programs dont do. The only ONLY! thing I would change is put an intergrated background program in it.

They have made a number of improvements that have improved performance (I originally had a Handspring Visor Deluxe and have moved up to a Visor Pro) and the tech/customer support team is very quick to respond. I have not found another application that adheres so ardently to the Palm's Zen of design. SilverScreen beautifully enhances the basic funtionality of the Palm while making it even more straightforward to use. In fact it improves on every operation over the default OS and then adds killer themes and icon sets for a complete makeover of the screen--all this while not giving over to clutter or confusion. As an architect these are the same ideals we strive for when designing for clients. PocketSensei is the Frank Lloyd Wright of launcher design and has a very satisfied client-ME!
Thomas Doonan wrote at 04/01/2003

If I could have anything it would be a faster initial startup but I am happy to wait 2 seconds to have a simple, clean tabbed interface.

Essential for any PDA user! I have tried the other launcher programs and in my opinion, SilverScreen is by far the best. It is feature rich, but they do not get in the way of selecting programs. Also, the skins are great! I would really like to see a skin editor so that people can make their own skins, but for now I use Mensicus Hi-Res+ version and it is perfect. I can't stand to look at the original Palm OS launcher anymore, so I never use the icon 'Exit Silver' :) Seemless support for Sony Memory stick and haven't had any problems on my NR70V. BTW - The two programmable application buttons on the toolbar are the most useful things. One is set for my MP3 player, the other for my Remote Control program. Highly Recommended!!!

Looks great, is not too cluttered, or full of features that I don't need. This is a bit on the large side on the Tungsten, and there are a few issues with apps on a card, and the recycle bin can muck up occasionally. Minor issues aside this is my choice of app launcher, and I have tried every one I can find.
Faisal Malallah wrote at 02/18/2003
Nice but needs better support for TungstenT. Specially Bluetooth support; inorder for me to send an app by bluetooth I have to exit silver. Storing apps on the card is also buggy.
W Nelson wrote at 02/10/2003
Nice but suffers from some quirky behavior with OS5. When launching an app from the SD card, Silverscreen instead copies the application to internal memory, and launches it from there. It also creates a duplicate icon. Left quite a mess in my TT's internal memory as a result. On the other hand, pretty icons!

I don't understand the previous reviewer's comment. As far as I can tell, Silverscreen has the least options of the three. ZLauncher especially, has several option screens that are packed. This one has got the sharpest graphics though, and it does have the ability to change the icons of just about any of your apps. The others can't do that.

Silverscreen is and always has been my app launcher. Since I bought my first
Visor a year ago I have used Silver and I have been impressed with it's
power fused with wonderful eye candy. Lately it seems pocketsensei is
focusing more on the eye candy part then on the launcher itself. The only
thing that I am dissapointed with is the inclusion of the "pix sheet". I
enjoy the pix sheet with the pictures from the "tribute" set(Found here on
palmgear), but I question its usefulness and reason for being included. Two
things that I feel should be remedied are 1)When you select the list view
and expand the view to show databases that are asscociated with each app
then you launch and app, that view returns to the normal list view. This view
should be saved until you switch it back. 2)The other thing I would like to
see implemented is the ability for Silverscreen to remember the categories
that apps on my FlashModule were in. When I remove the module and then put
it back in,I have to recategorize everything. Also the lack of decent color
replacement icons is bothering me, I would prefer not to have icons that a
child could draw replacing my app icons. Those things aside SilverScreen is
and always will be my App launcher,no other launcher no matter how slick can sway me
from it.

Actually PocketSensei has been responsive to adding enhancements that I have asked for in the past. They added the ability to edit the application name by dragging the application to the info screen, tapping on the name, and changing it to what I like. By tapping home, without using the stylus, you can go through all of your application categories. I have a keyboard and have used it extensively within SilverScreen for years. By tapping the arrow in the upper right corner to change views to smaller icons, you'll find an interface that allows you to expand all the applications on screen and find out what databases have been associated with them. You can drag databases separately from the application to the trash bin. All of these make SilverScreen useful.. Of course, though I'm a fan, I too wish that there were business icon sets in color and a way to create my own icon sets for the tool.
Amy S. wrote at 06/18/2002
I went back and forth between Silver Screen and Launcher III some time before deciding on Launcher III. Why? Silver Screen looks amazing. But Launcher III has features that I find are easier to use (launching databases from the launcher, for one and deleting things from the Palm, for another). Also, I like that Silver Screen is skinnable, but it has been a while since there have been any new themes or icon sets for non-color devices. And it is my understanding that the new Launcher III (LauncherX) will be skinnable. But the biggest reason I chose Launcher III was the phenomenal keyboard support and the much easier navigation with the hardware buttons (scrolling through categories with Page Up/Page Down, etc.) If Silver Screen had those, I would probably switch back. That is, if I don't fall in love with LauncherX.

However, since I changed over to my Sony Clie 760 I was dissapointed with the lack of real Jog dial support and Hi-Res. When v2.6 came out I thought this would be great with Hi-res and jog dial support. Now with v2.7 it has improved but still not enough themes, as I whilst there are 2 other themes along side Chromecast, these still do not seem to function in true Hi-res mode. Other major point being a Clie fan ... jog dial does not allow for moving through apps but only through Quicksilver. Still has some work to do before I would go back to SilverScreen. Good first update, but still lacking ability to allow for smaller icons, would like to see more hi-res theme selection(currenly Chroma Cast is the only choice), easier transfer or apps from card to ram, and better jog dial support. Overall, it is a good first step, but it still needs to be more Clie friendly if it is to earn more than three stars.
Ingo Heinicke wrote at 04/04/2002
Pocketsensei has not only released the most appealing Palm launcher today but is constantly updating this tool. The support is extraordinary and I never regretted having bought version 1.x and upgraded to 2.x one second. I can only recommend registering this one if you like the look as this is what you look at everytime you use your Palm.
Alvin Lim wrote at 04/03/2002
Disappointing, the Hi-Res isn't what I'm expecting, maybe there are no theme available yet? I seee no different btw the pervious version and this release. Loading speed after exiting every program back to silverscreen is extremely disappointing, maybe it's due to VFS? I don't face this problem with other launchers!
Kevin Woo wrote at 04/02/2002
As a previous reviewer said, the new version (2.6) supports hi-res screen... but it is only for default color theme (Chromacast). SilverScreen still remains one of the most visually appealing and feature-rich launcher, but I would like a different support of Jog Dial. SilverScreen has been supporting Jog Dial for a while, but Clie's default launcher has a more intuitive support for Jog Dial.
Pamela Jones wrote at 04/02/2002
I still LOVE this launcher! My only complaints are due to using external media and purchasing a Clie. The launcher is still quick slow when you have lots of stuff on CF or memory stick...even when overclocked.
The latest release cleans up the chromacast theme in hires BUT what most of us would LIKE to see is a way to have the icons be smaller...like in the hires Sony launcher or their competitor's Mlauncher.
Keep up the good work! I'll be looking forward to more hires themes, more color themes and future improvements!
Thomas Theuerkorn wrote at 04/02/2002
BEAUTIFUL! I was missing the hires mode in Silverscreen ... until now. Looks great, thank you. So only little room for improvement seems to be left. (Like the delete function)
Jeff G. wrote at 04/02/2002
I've been using SilverScreen for a while and really like it. However, I was considering going to something else because of its lack of hires support for the Clie. Version 2.6 promises this, but it turns out that "hires support" only means that one of the themes has nicer looking icons. This isn't really hires support -- it should allow for more icons per screen, etc. Looks like a rush job so that they could claim hires.

This latest version 2.5 will be staying on my color Clie for a while. I like the themes and overall visual "cuteness" of the UI. It's quite a bit slower than LauncherIII but it doesn't bother me much. I like the ticker feature as well. But there are several things I wish the next update/upgrade will touch upon:
- make it faster! especially considering this is a rather bloated program for a launcher
- make it Hi-Res (an absolute must!)
- make use of the Jog Dial so it selects apps
If they don't come up with this in the next version I may just switch over to LauncherX which comes out soon.

While Silverscreen has an intuitive interface, excellent graphics and nifty add-ons... I must say that IMHO, it does not always improve mission critical ergonomics.
<BR><BR>
Things like the cycling battery meter and date/time displays are eye-candy to me. While the pop-up menu with its hotspots is a nice touch, the time (no of clicks) needed to switch between apps is often the same as the original palm interface, if you've bothered to customise either (people often give up on the Palm interface without exploring simple changes such as switching to list view and rearranging the categories to group mission critical apps into the main menu).<BR>
Given that, a improvements over the Palm interface which I really liked include the improved file viewer, beam functions and drop-down list of recently-used apps. But again, most of these can be accomplished with other freeware apps, without the 213kb bloat.
Go with Silverscreen if you like an integrated, eye-candy wow-wee kind of user environment. The alternative, streamline the indigenous interface to your preference and capitalise on lean, functional and often free 3rd-party add-ons. I'll choose the latter ;-)

An exceptional application! I am an avid Palm Pilot user and have purchased hundreds of software applications. This is one application, that I continue to use. It is not only a useful tool, but it is also fun and enables my Palm Pilot to be anything but everyday humdrum. I check Pocket Sensei's web site weekly, hoping for Icon, Theme and/or Chromacast updates. I enjoy changing my icons per my mood.
However, I note that you can not change an application's icon that is on your expansion card. That would be nice...
Worth every dollar that I paid for it.

This is a solid program, and almost worth every penny I paid for it. The only area in which it lacks is that the image quality does not match what PocketSensei advertises on their website. The colors and graphics are not nearly as crisp as I was led to believe they would be!

I love this launcher. The capability of deleting programs using a "Windows-like" recycle bin is of great help to me, who is sometimes a bit too quick on the delete button. Great in color, the themes change my way to look at things when I start up my Palm.
The only reason why this is not a 5-star review is 1- sometimes it takes a while before display, 2- The little handle that makes you switch from the Toolbar to your tabs is still not back in release 2.5. I'm sticking to my 2.1.5 version until this old feature is brought back. I hate this little menu.

I was running version 2.4 without any problems. When version 2.5 was released I immediately installed it on my Palm IIIc; however, I'm having problems with the hidden items feature not working properly. A hidden application won't reappear when I click on "Display Hidden Items". The only way I can make the hidden items reappear is the perform a soft reset. I've emailed the developer; however, I'm not getting much, if any, help because I'm told that no other similar complaints have been received. Also I had an isolated problem with all of the applications being jumbled out of alphabetical order. The developer thinks I accidentally did this while using the list view; however, I rarely use the list view and wasn't at the time of the problem. Is anyone else out there having these problems. If so, please notify the developer so these problems are taken seriously. I usually give 5 stars for Silverscreen; however, until these problems are resolved I have reduced the rating to 3 stars.

The application is a very capable replacement for the standard launcher. It also a major design flaw when it comes to folder managment. 1) It should inherit existing folder settings already established in the default launcher. 2) It does not manage "Flash Modules". If you insert a FM and assign programs to folders, then remove the FM. The next time you insert the FM, all of the programs are back in the "Unfiled" folder.

Hopefully the Vista (color theme) is made available for the Greyscale...
Well worth the money, try it and see!!!

As a registered user, I have two comments regarding SilverScreen:
<BR>
1) It would be great if their was an option to allow the jog dial to operate the same way that it does on the standard Sony 760c launcher. (i.e. instead of the jog dial slidng the viewing area up and down, have it cycle through the programs allowing you to scroll through the apps and select the app with one hand.)
<BR>
2) Make a high res version on your program
James Brewer wrote at 01/29/2002
This program is a wonderful supplement to the Palm handhelds. The only reason I cannot give it a perfect score is Pocket Sensei's continued preference for childish icons that have no relation to the majority of applications a serious Palm user has on board. I find myself spending lots of time trying to be creative with my icon selections in hopes of finding something relevant to the program I am using. Some suggestions for Icon groups: Interests (music, sports, outdoors), Business (office related icons) and some replacements for mainstream programs like Avantgo, Pocket Quicken, WordSmith and so forth.
Alberto Melis wrote at 01/24/2002
After years of using another launcher, I have switched to SilverScreen and I think it is the best so far, easy to use and beautiful to look at. The only reason that I do not rate it excellent (*****) is their penchant for having juvenile and sophomoric icon assortments that do not have any relation to possible uses. They appear to have a great assortment of greyscale icons, which should be easy to port -- they need to realize that it is mostly adult and professionals that can afford the high end PDA's that use SilverScreen to its fullest.
Steve Hyde wrote at 01/15/2002
I have been a SilverScreen user for about a year now, having also tried various other launchers. I agree with the comment about some of the theme icons being unusable, I too would like to see some more 'function oriented' icons, especially in H2O which looks great.
<BR>
I do have a couple of gripes however - the reason that SS doesn't get 5 stars! One is that it is still slow every time that it needs to refresh and read apps from the expansion card. I also have Megalauncher installed at the moment which, while it doesn't look quite as good, is much faster. If my evaluation continues like this I might even consider changing over.
<BR>
My second gripe is that moving apps to and from flash with JackFlash, from within SS can cause multiple apps to lose their categorisation and/or cause the Palm to crash!
John Tinney wrote at 01/10/2002
SilverScreen has always been a great program and this upgrade has continued the tradition. I like the option of being able to customize the scrollbar; however, I also agree with the previous review that the small green triangle should be brought back so we can have the option of being able to toggle more quickly between tools and tabs since I rarely use the ticker. I also want to take this opportunity to mention that Vista, the new color theme, is definitely the best color theme so far. Hopefully, PocketSensei will send us more of the same quality. Now all PocketSensei needs to do is get rid of all those bizarre and childish Chromicons (Aliens, Anipals, Birds, Bubbles, Cuties, Dino Plus, Gorts, etc.) which are useless as replacement icons because they don't even remotely relate to any applications. PocketSensei needs to take those great grayscale icons and convert them to color. Those great icons were the only thing I missed when I upgraded from a grayscale to a color Palm.

When Silver came out, I thought it was a great program and when the color version came out, I was even more impressed. Lately, I have been disappointed though as I check back frequently looking for new color themes and icons and keep finding the same old story. The original B/W version had many themes and icons but the color users keep getting the short end of the stick. The icons we have are mostly cartoonish or for kids, very few of which have parents willing to fork out the bucks for the color Palm models. The majority of color users are executives like myself who would like to see some more professional looking themes/icons to compliment their handhelds, not more Gorts or artworks. The program itself is still the best out there but the lack of support on themes/icons for color users force me to give it only three stars.

Wonderful job with Version 2.3.2. I am using Silverscreen with my m505 and the issues which other reviewers had with the SD card support seem to be fixed with this version. I haven't tested the categories function though since I keep all my apps unfiled and don't use tabs. This version also seems much snappier than I remember Silverscreen being months ago. I wish PocketSensei would keep all the color themes on their site. Some of the older ones which I liked don't seem to be available anymore.

I loved SilverScreen until I started using a MemPlug CF module. I'm using SilverScreen 2.2.5 Now whenever I use PiMover to move files from RAM to MemPlug SilverScreen forgets which categories I have everything filed under. Probably due to PiDirect exiting when moving files. The Palm OS filing system itself can remember categories, SilverScreen should too, instead all my apps get dumped into the Unfiled category. I've had to stop using SilverScreen because of this. If you don't move files around this app is killer.

Also I would love to be able to choose any battery theme icon while using any theme. This is because I love to Chormacast battery image, but I would like to use other themes, and I really do not enjoy the other battery icons. So if either of my suggestion could be used I would really enjoy seeing them in a future release. Thanks, Doug

This is really an outstanding piece of software for your Palm OS PDA. Version 2.2 adds to that, by providing more bug fixes (even though 2.1.5 was pretty solid) and a revised folder option., with a new way of filing your apps. The only thing missing is the second half-arrow, which is supposed to be near the bottom of the screen. This is not a big concern, it just means that it's harder to switch menus on the bottom of the screen than before. But, as you can see, this did not affect my review at all, and the themes are awesome as always. Great job, Pocket Sensei!

But it's working fine, and resolving the above mentioned will give it the last *

Release 2.2 seems to haven't fixed my concern about the SD. It seems the names of the programs stored on SD seems to represent the actual same of the file. For example, I have a game Bang and when viewed using Silverscreen, that game is no longer "Bang" but "Bang_color" or even worst there are some that seems to take the 8 character format like DOS (i.e. Alchem~1) but yet there are those with more than eight characters long. Silverscreen needs to handle the naming of the programs on SD more appropriately. Other than that, this is one kick *** program.

I must admit I have not seen the issues described below. I have a Sony Clie 610 and it may be because of Sony's better implementation of the external memory. OS4.0 is not perfect afterall and external memory cards have their limits.
I actually thought Silverscreen has the media very nicely integrated and was very happy with Version 2.1 to support it (maybe not 100% but close to).
After all that, the only thing I am looking for is the support for the hi-res of my Sony but that may be pushing it (since no other Palm device actually provides such feature)

I must agree with Andy Wong's comments ... if you have a Palm 505 like me, you will find this program's 'supposed' card support to be frustrating .... frankly, it is not even worth bothering with the card support. For example, I have an original PalmPak Games card. After contacting PocketSensei Support, I was told that Silverscreen is not able to recognise that some programs (such as Simcity) are registered (and therefore do not work in Silverscreen) ..... apparently the GamesPak card is configured such that only Palm OS can run it. Furthermore, some programs which I loaded to an SD card are not visible in Silverscreen but are fully functioning in the Palm OS. I have to shut down Silverscreen to use these programs (which I find defeats the purpose of having card support). I do understand that much of the problems lie with the apps rather than Silverscreen ... I hope there is improvement in the future.
I would like to qualify my above statements because if you don't have an expansion card (which will turn you into a stressmonger like me), this is otherwise a very good program. Great interface, great ticker, and great drag and drop tools. Combined with the various icon themes and Fonthack, you can make your Palm very personalised. This is what keeps me using it for the time being.

I'm using Silver Screen as my launcher of choice, (after loading and researching thru four other launchers that are avail.) This is the only one that allows you to use with expansion card seamlessly. This app also has lots of neat features like a scrolling ticker screen displaying todays todos,...My only grip is that some app ICONs disappear, leaving on screen only a small icon of an indicator that the app is located on the Sd card. Until the other launchers apps catch up with Silver Screen, I'd use this one.

I too had the problems initially with running apps from the SD card. However, I turned in the bugs and "Bohm" at PocketSensei responded immediately. He looked at my move problems to and from the SD and the categorization not "sticking". He sent me a Beta for testing and now SilverScreen is 100% compatible with the SD on my m505. Awesome! I told him to release the fixes ASAP! Many apps do not support accessing their databases on the SD, but I was able to move the apps to the SD and leave the databases on the handheld. Now ALL apps, whether they have large databases like My "Fireviewer", "Photo Album", or are self-contained like "RamHog" and "Datelist" run perfectly from the SD card. SilverScreen knows to move just the apps and leave the databases in RAM! Moving or copying using SilverScreen is easy, and now I never have to leave SilverScreen!! Silver is especially now the ONLY perfect application to use if you have an expansion card!!

To delete the application's icon reside in the expansion card/or move back to palm become not possible. After a hotsync, those that icon with the application deleted always return to the Unfile categories and can not be activated. I had try out some programes that worked properly are Ababall, CityTime, Vegas Slots, gMovie & iambicMail. And programe that can not run from the expansion card at all are AportisDoc, Quickoffice, TealMovie & FireViewer. Maybe could be due to conflict with other similar software like PowerRun. I agree with the previous posters - version 2.1 is not yet ready for prime time. All apps moved to the expansion card lose their categories as soon as one is run - slipping back into "Unfiled". Apps moved to expansion are not available to be assigned to buttons.
Looks like we'll be waiting for Version 2.2 for a truly workable expansion card implementation.
On the plus side, it appears that apps run pretty quickly from the expansion card, though it would be nice if some sign that they were beginning to run was displayed. The blank screen can be disconcerting.

I am a fan of Silver Screen since a lot of time but I think that this new version with the support of cards SD is not well finalized: No the message indicating that launching is in progress (for SD programs), no delete function for SD programs.
I have now heaps of short-cuts which do not correspond any program and which appear again in the unfiled category each time I starts Silver or when I launch a program installed is SD memory card.
For me, it's not finalized at all !!!

I've downloaded and installed the 2.1 version on my Palm m505. The shortcuts to the programs on the SD works well except the shortcut's label for each appz is incorrect. For example, I have shortcuts that takes the modified name of the file, for example, I have a game Ababall installed and instead of a shortcut with the label "Ababall", it's labelled "ababall_color". There should be options to rename the shortcuts. There are some shortcuts with the "~" symbol because it is too long. Besides these problems, Silverscreen is an excellent launcher.

I've stuck with version 1.8, which seems to be still elegant, beautiful, and simple to use.. Plenty for me.. (ver 1.9 adds some of that feature creep I mentioned)
I wont be upgrading.

Silverscreen was the first application that I purchased for my handheld, and it has continually been updated & improved without getting hard to use (like the latest datebook version). If you have a black & white handheld, you need this to keep your eyes from crossing every time you look at the screen. If you have a color handheld, download Chromacast and see what your handheld is capable of. I have run silverscreen on a visor and more recently on a visor prism, with no stability or other kinds of problems. The new tabbed interface is awesome, especially if you can reduce your number of categories to avoid flipping pages. The ticker is cool, but I think it scrolls too slowly. It's way faster to just hit the hard button and pull up your datebook. But cool nonetheless. Combine 2.0 with a color handheld and you get that instant wow factor that everyone will be impressed with.
If there are any programs that are worth more than freeware, they're silverscreen, actionnames, and afterburner. Enjoy!
Al S. wrote at 06/22/2001

I have been using Silverscreen since I bought my Palm Vx back in June of 2000 and I have always loved the tool. The interface makes the flat interface that comes with the Palm come to life. SilverScreen 2.0 follows the great programming that I have come to expect from this group. The only thing I would like to see is a way to SLOW DOWN THE SCROLL speed.

I love Silver Screen. It's a very nice program, it looks great, and it really does add a number of good organizational functionalities shortcuts to my Visor Platinum. I would probably give it 4 stars (4.5 stars if it was possible) except I have a problem with the v2.0's new Ticker feature. It doesn't support Multibyte characters (Korean with HanTIP, in my case). A good number of my Datebook/ToDo entries are in Korean, and Korean characters show up as blanks in SilverScreen's Ticker. (Likewise, application category names in Korean also show up "broken") A big bummer, since I find the new Ticker feature to be very cool. I've already emailed PocketSensei's support about this, and they replied that they have no plan to support multibyte characters as of now. (They replied very quickly though, so kudos for that) So the only work-around for me (and other users who use multibyte characters like Korean, Japanese, etc) is to keep all my Datebook/ToDo entries English. Not a satisfying solution. This is the reason why I'm giving this otherwise-excellent app just 3 stars. I hope PocketSensei (whose name includes a Japanese word, ironically) will support multibyte characters real soon. And for those of you who don't use multibyte characters, what the heck are you waiting for? Download this right now and give it a spin!

Well, using this for a while now and don't want to miss it. I think it's absolutely excellent. However, the new ticker really doesn't do much for me. For one the refresh rate on my PalmV is too slow to make it reasonable readable. A little notifier (icon) that indicates ToDo items etc. would satisfy my needs. I upgraded since I expect this product to continue the excellent support, the difference from 1.9.8 to 2.0 is otherwise not enough in my mind to spend the 10 bucks.

Wonderful. I love silverscreen, and recommend it to anyone who buys a visor. I don't know if you've ever had any problems with it, but when you email PocketSensei with an issue, it's always taken care of promptly.

Silverscreen has been a spectacular product in the past. In terms of look, feel, and simplicity, there were no rivals. Still today, there are no rivals. The reason for the 3 stars is that, as of late, it's progress and support has been sluggish. It's been 3 months since the Palm m505 was released, and yet no support for the expansion card. In addition, the color icons are hardly useful. All in all, Silverscreen/Chromacast is a great product. Just lately, it has lacked the impressive performance that it had demonstrated in the past. I eagerly look forward to its next release.

Wonderful!!! When I upgraded my Palm from a Personal to a Vx, the one thing I missed more than anything else was the tagged desktop of Launcher III. I Registered Silver Screen the day after I bought my new Palm and upgraded to 2.0 two days after it came out. The new tabs are great!
Wish List: 1. An enhanced Leonardo theme.
2. Some way to slow the ticker down, on a my Palm it blurs.....
Keep it up guys!!!
Hamid Misnan wrote at 06/18/2001
Outstanding.. the new 2.0 has been greatly enhanced with tab and ticker and it refreshes faster than the old version. I've been holding up to go with Silverscreen because of it slow refresh and no tab. Tho' if the price can be lowered a bit.. it will be a 5 stars from me.
Trev Laven wrote at 06/18/2001
The twenty dollar registration fee is a bit high, but it is pretty much worth it, with the coming expansions of free updates, free themes, and free icons (hopefully a lot more color themes and actual USEFUL color icons). Lately the color section has only been updated maybe once a month with only a set or two of (hardly useful) icons or a single theme, if that. A simple program for user created themes/icons/skins would really help out with the selection. Overall this is probably the app I use the most everyday, and well, it's just plain pretty. Harmful if swallowed.
Andrew Leung wrote at 06/18/2001
Been waiting a while for a new version. This one has some great new features, only buggy part is the 16 bit color on a Palm M505 else it'd get a 5 star rating.
Marlon Waite wrote at 06/17/2001
Great support for color on my new M505 (need a few more useful icons, though). Also needs support for expansion cards. Currently, I need to exit Silverscreen before I can access programs on the card. All in all, a very good palm app.
Larry Beougher wrote at 06/16/2001
With the Palm IIIc, it's all about style... and what would style be without color? I like the fact that the themes are free, but I need more than just 5 color themes!!!! And what about allowing users to rename apps themselves? And the price is a little steep for an app than does what free utilities can do.
Christopher Ouk wrote at 05/22/2001

David, new icons are possible, just read the manual. Anyway, I do have this now for a year and it greatly improved, though it never was actually bad. Only the trashcan in v1.9x required some adjustment, since to actually delete files that are not represented by an icon, you still have to quit it to use the PALM OS. However, I found JackFlash very useful to solve this issue. (Then again, I may just not understand how to use the trashcan correctly.) Great tool!

I first came across SilverScreen after it won the InVision Award last year. I immediately registered it and was devasted last week when I had to do a hard reset and couldn't find my registration code to re-activate the full version. I wrote to PocketSensei and heard back in 15 MINUTES with my replacement code. The experience taught me two things 1) I am addicted to the spectacularly designed SilverScreen interface, 2) PocketSensei has terrific customer service. Gravity should win an Oscar for best theme!
Donald Braxton wrote at 03/25/2001
I can't really begin to compare this app to the regular Palm launcher (or any others) because it does everything better from A to Z. Scrolling is faster, organization is simpler and more customizable, and customer support is second to none. Bottom line is the interface is close to perfect for the handheld medium--it's obvious the developer has sweated the details. Other programs have begun to copy SilverScreen features but the Palm launcher is little changed from its inception. Palm or some other device maker would be wise to adopt this as the front end interface and watch their market share explode. My only complaint with SilverScreen is I wish there was an app for developing my own themes. I would encourage the developer to resist a tab interface as it would clutter the screen without adding any useful functionality (At the most it would save a single tap, at worse it would add taps to change categories). Anyway that's my 2 cents worth.
Chris Peck wrote at 03/25/2001
It seems that some suffer from launcher envy! I've run this program head to head against every competitor and (no surprise) quickly discovered why it is far and away the most popular. Many seem to get caught up in the lucious graphics and lose sight that it actually has MORE functions than the others. It is clear that some associate drab graphics with ability and have never bothered to actually try this gem. How do they explain that it has gotten the highest marks from every single Palm review site?? The HotSpots alone make this indespensible for quick and easy launching without navigating through layer after layer of confusing dialogs. My advice for choosing any software is to ignore the rants and raves and give it a try to decide for yourself. It is the beauty of shareware... My own opinion is that SilverScreen along with Zap!2000 and DateBook 4 represent the finest programming for the Palm platform. Keep up the excellent work and I am eagerly awaiting version 2.0!

Great, fun to use software for the Palm. Loads of features. Easy to use. It would get 5 Stars but it does not yet have support for the Sony Clie & add-on software such as PowerRun. I'd buy it for my handheld if it included such support.

I LOVE THIS PROGRAM!!!!!!!!!! It's soooooo easy to use and the custamizable themes and individual icons make Palm a back-in-my-day thing. But, sorry to say, this program won't be given a 5-star rating. My explaination is simple: SilverScreen must relize that there is a one Palm, a Palm that is not FULLY compatible with that Palm. That is the PEG-300, the Sony Clie, the one I own. I love your program and all, but i keep switching between silverscreen and the boring interface. The reason for that is becuase the JogDial is not compatible with silverscreen and the JogDial itself is an extremely useful tool, and i am annoyed for silverscreen not to be compatible with it. I did not spend 300$ on something that won't be fully compadible with all enhancements like, in my opinion, the best desktop them in the world, SilverScreen. As of that, I refuse to buy this program until it is compatible with my Clie. But never the less, EXELENT WORK!!!!! AND PLEASE BE SURE TO MAKE AN UPDATE TO WORK WITH THE JOGDIAL PLEASE!!! AGAIN, FINE WORK!!!!

I consider this to be the most essential program on my Visor. I had to do a hard reset several months ago and was horrified to return to the Palm launcher which suddenly looked like something out of a 1950's sci-fi movie. One think I would like to see, however, is a SilverScreen for color machines (I plan to get the new Palm model) and also maybe a tab system like Launch Em'. Other than these two things this is about as close to perfection as you can get. The thems are funky and free. The Iceberg theme puts a smile on my face every time I use it and Chinatown is very cool (or is is Iceberg that is cool? :-) A Japanese style manga theme would be very nice too... More thoughts on this next time.

The experience of using SilverScreen is just light years apart from the standard Palm OS or other launchers I have tried. Useful functions are added without clutter and speed improvements are noticed throughout. Now I see that PocketSensei will be coming out with a color version on the 22nd of this month! I hope to be the first customer... (hey, I would be honored to beta test too...mail me)!

I was hesitant to hop on the Palm bandwagon until I saw one of my friends at work using his Palm V with SilverScreen. Two hours later I was at Best Buy picking up a Palm and that night hotsynced SilverScreen as my first third party app. Now Palm would be wise to save us a step and make this their next OS. Everyone I show this too demands that I beam it over and becomes another convert. It's developers like PocketSensei that make the Palm a viable platform and the best handheld device. Next up: try SilverScreen on a Kyocera phone...cool, very cool.

It seems clear to me that some people are so blown away by the great looks in SilverScreen they fail to recognize that it not only matches the features of other launchers but has many that are absent from all contenders. I should know as I was given the task of finding the best and easiest launcher to use with the over two thousand Palms we equip our staff with. SilverScreen, needless to say, was the hands down (or the thumbs up?) winner by a mile. The overwhelming response of our people in the field has been astonishment that this isn't the default launcher on every Palm to begin with.
Amitie Smith wrote at 03/01/2001
Basically an easy to use, extremely intuitive, delightful to view interface/alternative for the pre-installed Palm OS launcher.
I am dismayed, however, by the cost. Since I bought it within the year, the price has been raised twice. I'm further disturbed by the inability of a purchaser of an earlier version (pre-1.9) to upgrade to the next version without forking over another $19+ dollars. Do the math, that's over $30 for a graphically pleasing but nonetheless basic launcher in less than a year!
In short, one the beauties of the Palm OS *was* the ability to upgrade to a later version without having to pay -still again-, a la Microsoft. I've purchased other Palm shareware & have not yet been required to pay additional money for upgrades. Heck, I paid for WinZip for Windows 3+ years ago & am still getting postcards for free upgrades!! It is truly disturbing to find that the successful programs for the Palm OS seem to be going in the same direction.
Wish it weren't so &, but for my perception of that small miscalculation on the developer's part, it would garner a full 5 stars from me.
C'mon, paying once (that's more than many people pay...ever!) is really enough.
FWIW, the Palm is a wonderful OS *because* there are so many apps that are freeware or inexpensive, pay-once/play-forever shareware. When that changes, all things will change, I fear.
Bottom line. Caveat emptor. With this program, you may be paying for the 3.x version sooner than you think.

Silverscreen is provides great interface and useful tools for the Palm user, but with version 1.9, Silverscreen loses the advanced deleting features it used to have, with the ability to delete silverscreen themes. And another problem with Silverscreen is the need to wait for "official" themes fomr the company be released. Why can't there be some kit that will allow the average user (me) make their own themes, or at least a forum for ideas for themes?
Mark Neeley wrote at 02/19/2001

This is my most favourite OS Enhancer. But there is this difference I dislike between 1.8 and 1.9. In 1.8, the SilverScreen's shutdown is "soft" shutdown. But in 1.9 is "hard". I am using PadlockHack putting the AutoLock to "smart". In 1.8 it works fine but in 1.9, it will prompt the password when I turn it on. I hope the author is willing to change the shutdown part to the 1.8 version.
Artie Mandel wrote at 02/18/2001
In my opinion, SilverScreen 1.9 is a step back from 1.8. The trash feature is ok, but there should be an option to turn it off, if you just want an item to delete right away. The arrow to go to list mode looks very out of place in the new version. It was better placed on the toolbox. Also, one major bug, at least 8 of my icons are not aligned in the new interface. They are all third-party programs, mostly games, with SilverScreen icons. I'm downgrading to 1.8 until some of these bugs are fixed.
Bill Camden wrote at 02/16/2001

I've been a loyal user since 1.3 and I agree that this IS the launcher that should ship with all Palms. It would, however, be great to edit & create themes. Note: I do enjoy the simplcity of a tabbed launcher and would like to see it incorpoated as an OPTION in future versions, or at least a beta to test the response.
Steven Ehrlick wrote at 02/15/2001
This is my favourite app, maybe because I see it and use it the most. I defrag my Palm every morning which resets the Palm and when I see the Palm interface, I race for the SilverScreen icon. One caveat on 1.9... If the toolbar buttons don't work (mine didn't), then you are going to have to delete the previous version and then load 1.9, along with the extended and standard themes and icons. A small hassle for a great product.
C Evans wrote at 02/14/2001
This is an excelent product. Period. It's quick, intuitive, stylish, doesn't crash/destroy data/look like a crappy WinCE (pronounced wince) product and it's reasonably priced with regular updates and good support. People complained that the colour icons didn't show and they didn't even allow the default schemes and not only did they fix the icon problem but they're developing a colour program comparable to this one.<BR>
Lame, whiney reviews by people that don't get an icon for their favourite app shouldn't sway you. Go ahead and try it. It's (almost) fully functional and everyone I know that did went out and got it BEFORE the trial was up.
There are very few products that are this solid (WordSmith and Certicom's SecureMemo spring to mind).<BR>
Try it and enjoy it, or look for something more to your taste. (A word of warning, Palm goes to great lengths to consider usability and functionality from a PDA perspective and sets guidelines for getting the most from their testing experiences. Tabs are lame and uncomfortable on the small screen of a PDA and the only people that like them are the loud ones.)

I have removed it from my system because of its lack of colour (new 3c), but on the PocketSensei website they say the colour version (ChromaCast) will be here around March 22, so I'll be patient... I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Make sure if you use version 1.8 and upgrade to 1.9 that you download new versions of the extended themes -- I missed one, and weird things happened until I updated them. This is one of the few addons that was well worth the price tag -- it does everything that a dozen or more hacks try to do, and does them elegantly and consistently.

As for color support, this announcement is on the author's web site today: "PocketSensei also announced that ChromaCast? will be released on March 22 to coincide with the opening of the CeBIT tradeshow in Hannover, Germany. A nice product, but it needs to support Lefty, or at least have a left-hand option in the preferences. I use Lefthack to move all scrollbars over to the left side, and in Silverscreen, the scrollbar overwrites the leftmost apps. I work my way around it by making sure there are few enough apps in a category to avoid the scrollbar popping up in the first place. Fix it and I'll give it a 5. Don't miss out on the 15 percent of the population that's left handed.

Well, I like SilverScreen, and I paid for it, but there's a few things that PocketSensei should seriously consider. One, I'm in accord with those that say it needs color. I just upgraded to a Visor Prism and I'm using MegaLauncher II while I wait. SilverScreen is unattractive on a color device.
Second, PocketSensei has said several things are "coming soon" that really need to arrive, and soon. The first of course, is the "color application based on SilverScreen" (see their FAQ). The other two things that they desperately need to create is a customizeable theme and an icon editor. If they were to make an icon editor, they could stop releasing icons and let the public do it for them. Heck, instead of a customizeable theme, a theme builder would be the best way to do as well. Then they could sit back and work on the SilverScreen program itself much more and not be bothered by making all these themes and icons (the public would crank them out very quickly, I guarentee you).
Suggestion to PocketSensei also: make your color app support hi-color on Prisms if possible.
Martin Solis wrote at 12/08/2000
Have to piggy-back on the "needing color" statments. I used Silver Screen on my IIIe extensively without any problems at all. When I upgraded to the IIIc, I deleted Silver Screen. This application is the most useful app I have for my Palm, but the missing color feature makes it an unattractive option to the shipped OS with the IIIc. Show me color and we're back in business. Hope to see it soon.

Keep working on color, as their impatience given your great product is understandable, but keep the vast majority of us who use and evaluate your product for what it is, not what it is not, give you the BIG five stars!

Great looking - but absolutely needs tabs.
Someone mentioned it takes only 2 more taps to get to the desired app, but that is the same as the original palm launcher.
I will still go with Launcher III (which is free, too)
Randy G wrote at 11/02/2000
$&^%& the tabs! If you want tabs, but Launch'em or something of that ilk. The interface is much cleaner without them, and we're talkng the difference between 1 or 2 taps. In addition, the Quickpick option added in 1.6 works as well or better than a tab scheme. In short, add tabs and I'll want my money back.

Excellent! I especially LOVE the superb grayscale graphics on my Palm V! There are only 3 improvements I think should be included in SilverScreen - firstly, a smaller file size please (i've only got 2mb memory); secondly, could there be an option to start SilverScreen as the default launcher (like the option available in LauncherIII); thirdly, maybe it could include options to view hacks and to view documents (as files in the launcher)

Over all this is a wonderfull program that adds both class and user friendly options. The only complaint that I have is that I have a Visor with a Datebook+ program that i use instead of the regular Datebook. SilverScreen only allows the basic Datebooks icon to be changed. Therefore, I have this one icon on the screen that does not match with the current them at all. This is a very minor complaint on this overall excellent program, it's just one that bugs me.
Andrew Wellington wrote at 09/13/2000
With or without tabs this is easily the best launcher out there. Other launchers make big promises, but end up cluttered, crowded or just plain crash prone. SilverScreen stands alone as a work of art both stylistically and functionally.
Andrew Wood wrote at 09/13/2000
Yes, we like it, it makes my visor swanky and more enjoyable to use (honestly!) - if we've got grayscale, why don't we use it?<BR>
But, and it didn't stop me registering, but but but I do miss the tabs from Launch'em. Can we have some in an update pleeeease?
Trent Keeble wrote at 09/07/2000
I tried this back in March 2000, with some reservations. Even after trying the newer version, I'll still stick with Launch 'em. Lacking in SS are: tabs (LOTS of apps can go into 8 MB); ability to change the number of icons per row; and ability to manually arrange icons (rather than have them sorted alphabetically or by size, etc.). On the plus side, it's faster than it was in March and has 3rd party icons. I also like the way SS remembers where you were in the list. Overall, a good app but needs some more functionality for me.
Micah Puhrman wrote at 09/03/2000
SilverScreen has the smarts of Thomas Jefferson, the tough no-nonsense efficacy of Teddy Rosevelt and the charisma of John Kennedy. In the race against the other launchers it holds a double digit lead and destroys the competition in head-to-head debates. Okay so you may have guessed I'm a PoliSci major, but check SilverScreen out because I'm sure it will get your vote too. Happy Labor Day everyone!
Sprayed Dog wrote at 09/03/2000
This is very fancy spancy launcher and well, a fairly effective launcher compared to the original Palm launcher. I switched from Launcher III to SS, but was disappointed by 1/ its slower speed 2/ its not as user friendly as Launcher III and 3/ it causes my Palm to crash a lot more often when used with JackFlash. I switched back to Launcher III after 2 days, and was so happy with its convenience of the tab design, faster speed ... etc etc. Another downside to the SS is you have to adjust the contrast to way high, which looks good in SS, but too dark in all other apps.
All in all, if you're looking for a fancy looking launcher this is it. Otherwise I'd take the Launcher III anyday ... even if I have to pay $12 for LIII.

I downloaded the 21-day free trial and was immediately impressed. The looks are great and the functionality is even better. I had decided to register "in the next few days" when my evaluation period ran out. The Palm OS screen looked so "blah" that I had to register immediately. This program does a great job of enhancing the Palm OS without trying to completely re-do it.
Brent Dax wrote at 08/21/2000
An excellent launcher. In fact, I only have three little issues with it:
1) Use of scrollbars is not immediate (ie if you grab a scrollbar and move it, nothing happens until you lift the stylus.
2) Inability to change the icons on ROM apps is a little annoying - I'd love to change my Visor's CityTime icon.
3) [very minor] While Silver's buttons, etc. are beautifully rendered, it would be nice if they found a way to make buttons in other apps look the same.
None of these are fundamental flaws, which makes Silver one of the best uses of memory space anywhere.
Allen Bearden wrote at 08/14/2000

I only note few bugs : - there is still a problem to display the icon of Parens 1.5 (a little bug) - when you install a new app it is not in SilverScreen. You have to return to the Palm launcher and re-enter into silverscreen to see it ! Except this, it is a must !

This application not only makes my Palm Vx look great, it makes it easier to use. The newer version even supports the funtion native to the Palm's own launcher, which allows the user to write the first letter of an application and have the screen jump to those applications that begin with that character. Version 1.5 now remembers the last place you were at in the list of applications after you launch and quit an application. Very cool application, and, in my opinion, it should come with the Palm when it is shipped from Palm, Inc.
Jeff Heideman wrote at 07/29/2000
This is easily the best enhancement available for the Palm. It creates a very comfortable environment as well as a beautiful interface! Adding support for third party icons is fantastic! For those complaining about some application icons not included yet, calm down. I am sure they will be releasing more icon packs as time goes on. After all, they keep releasing new themes all the time. You can see some more great screen shots at my website www.liquidpalm.com as well as some screenshots for PalmTheme. Problems have arisen since I upgraded to 1.5. My patience is decreasing:
<BR>
1)Some applications duplicate themselves visually in SilverScreen with other programs icons when moving to and from flash with Jack Flash. Example: I moved ActionNames out of flash with JF. I returned to Silver and I had two Actionnames icons, one with its standard icon and the other with Cspotrun's icon. Leave Silver and everything is normal.
<BR>
2)How could you possibly leave out the following Icons:
<BR>
ActionNames,DateBk4,Jack Flash,FlashPro?
<BR>
In understanding that there are thousands of PalmOS software to consider, the above listed should have easily been considered over some of the overabundant game icons.

SilverScreen is fantastic!

Being right-handed and finding tabs to be more annoying than helpful, I must confess that I find this to be far and away the best tool for organizing and launching apps on my Visor. Besides having the most uncluttered design and useful feature set this software gives my somewhat toyish feeling handheld a real touch of professionalism and class. I am keeping my eyes peeled for another offering of this highest caliber from PocketSensei and will be the first customer. A theme based on the Visor icons would be a nice touch...
Larry Greenberg wrote at 07/25/2000
Silver Screen is now complete! My only two complaints, upon purchasing the application when it first came out, were 1) it was too slow and 2) the third party applications looked terrible next to the beautiful Silver Screen icons.
Well, Pocket Sensei has fixed both issues. The speed of the program itself is still a little slow for my taste, but it's far better then the first release.
The new third party application icons are amazaing. This has now replaced Launch 'Em as the launcher on my Palm. With so many themes and icons avaialble this program is far and away the best launcher available for the Palm.

I must admit to never hearing of this application until I read about it in the Wall Street Journal. My Palm V has taking on a whole new appearance since that fateful day. Now I find myself working as a defacto salesman as I keep getting queries as to where I came across the "new OS." When I occasionally (and accidently) return to the default application launcher I am mortified by its banality. Simplicity is one thing, but it's no excuse for uninspired design.
<BR><BR>
Every style-conscious V owner deserves to have this elegant offering on their machine. Lastly, the features SilverScreen offers are 1) useful and 2) unobtrusive. A bargain on the highest order!

I have been using SilverScreen on my Visor with 8mb memory module with no problems what-so-ever. In fact if it weren't for SilverScreen I probably would have bought a Pocket PC (yikes) which has its problems but uses better graphics than the Palm in general (with the exception of a handful of software titles that take advantage of the 2-bit graphics hidden in every Palm device). Hopefully more software vendors will follow PocketSensei's lead and offer apps like this one that really take advantage of the Visor's capabilities without adding clutter (ala Pocket PC, et al).

I guess you could say I was something of a "TABby" cat when it came to application launchers having used Launch 'Em and Launcher III in the past. But I've grown to love SilverScreen and prefer dropping my apps in the category folder and the Palm-like implementation of choosing categories. Tabs were only useful when all categories could be displayed on the screen at once (in practice never) and lost their appeal when I had to scroll to the desired tab. The placement of tools in SilverScreen is flawless, making full use of the tiny screen space without cluttering the design. As close to perfection as I've found.

Silver Screen is a replacement app launcher for the Palm OS, and a darn good one at that. I have upgraded to v1.4 on my V running OS 3.3. No problems so far. Change between views and scrolling using up/down buttons work fine, as does selecting with initial letter of application. As for functionality, IF the only benefit of Silver was some pretty icons then the 100kB overhead would have quickly moved me away from keeping it! The drag and drop facility is very useful and speeds up selecting apps for beaming, deleting, changing category etc. No idea why others are having difficulty. I run Hackmaster and Flashpro alongside Silver without any problems. Keep up the good work. If only we could have a file of icon upgrades for all shareware so that they all looked the same. Wishfull thinking I know!

Just loaded version 1.4 on my Palm Vx, and every time I try to change views from small icons to large, it locks my Palm up!
One of the most annoying problems with earlier versions of Silver Screen is when you want to delete a program or change catagories, you can't enter the first letter to jump to a program, or even use the scroll buttons... you MUST tap on the digital scroll bar on the right side. This is a PAIN!!! With 8 megs and tons of programs, scrolling by tapping on a digital scroll bar is a joke, when the built in launcher allows you to use the hardware up/down buttons or enter a letter! I had hoped that this version would fix this, but it just crashes my Palm.

What happened to the performance!?! Scrollbars lag in response and category switching is way too slow. I really liked version 1.2 and was very excited that ver 1.3 fixed several of the problems with V/Vx, but sorry this version is too slow. So its back to Launch Em.
Trent Keeble wrote at 03/30/2000
OK, it's a pretty face for the standard Palm OS apps. No argument there. 3rd party apps need the same look to be consistent and make it desirable enough for me. I experienced the same slow redraw on the Vx that others have mentioned. Unacceptable. I also echo a previous post citing the lack of tabs as found in Launch 'Em. For functionality on the Vx my vote goes to Launch 'Em. If tabs are included, 3rd party icons made available, and speed improved for the Vx, I'll reconsider.

Really transformed my Visor into something special. I caught some subway riders rubber-necking to figure out what was on the screen. The best app thirteen bucks can buy without a doubt. I could imagine this costing twice as much very easily.

I used to use Go-Bar as my preferred launcher but that seems so cumbersome compared to this. I'm using a IIIx and have never experienced the slow icon-draw that appears to affect the Palm Vs mentioned in the reviews below.
The only improvement would be to be able to select icon styles for add-on software in order to keep the screen views looking as good as possible ! At the moment, a theme only affects standard Palm software.
Overall, an excellent product - money well spent !

It pretty.. but it's too SLOW!
Redrawing of icons takes too long.. the icons pop up 1 at a time.. too slow..
And the scrolling bar on the right don't seem to be working.. I have to use the up/down button to scroll..

I have reviewed this a couple of times. Many requested features are now present, and improvements are made. 4 Stars here.<BR>
However, screen redraw is very slow on a Palm Vx when changing categories (by tapping on the Apps silkscreen) Also, there seemed to be a problem with Jot.

I am not normally inclined to write reviews but I feel it is important to support the best and SilverScreen is just that--the best. I have literally tried everything under the sun and was beginning to think that the launcher I was looking for didn't exist. Then in February I stumbled upon this gem quite by accident (at first I didn't know it was a launcher) and haven't stopped oogling it yet. Their have been two significant updates since that time. The best just keeps getting better.

As a professional graphic designer of over seventeen years I have developed a keen eye for what works and what doesn't. Needless to say SilverScreen works and works overtime. The attention to detail here is phenomenal and I would predict that this will win a number of big awards in the months to come. We have come to adore this application around the office and look forward to the introduction of new themes and future revisions. A real winner gentlemen. Congratulations!

I think this is a great way to snazz up the Palm's interface...while adding some great functionality.
<BR>
I'd give it more ***'s but - let's face it, if it's going to look like the palm launcher, and just enhance it - why not use the palm launcher's database so that we don't have to re-categorize everything?
Rob Pinnington wrote at 03/27/2000
I have to agree that while some of the functionality is quite cool, the whole idea of themes is a non starter unless it is bundled with either:
1) an Icon editor
or
2) Icons for the most popular third party apps.

Okay, if I had some Oscars to distribute I'd give SilverScreen one for Best Design, another for Best Performance by a Launcher, and finally one for Best Picture. This app really is the launcher for the next 1000 years!
Kyle Stedman wrote at 03/25/2000
Yea, OK, its pretty to look at and the useful pop up screen is interesting, HOWEVER, it only changes the look of PalmOS icons and for those of us (many) ROM app replacement users, we gain nothing on looks, I have all of my PalmOS apps in one tab in Launch 'em and havent seen or needed the PalmOS apps in 3-4 days.
<BR>
When I was looking for a launcher, I compared Launch 'em and Silver Screen and purchased Launch 'em because, frankly, at this point, its better. SilverScreen needs to implement a couple of things in the future:
<BR>
1) 3D or specialized icons for the most popular and platinum certified 3rd party apps.
<BR>
2) Tabbed interface or other interface enhancement to make switching app categories a little more easier.

For me to give any program 5 stars is a high honor. And Silverscreen deserves it. I love the program, and how it keeps the same feel of the original Palm OS. It adds enough to make it a valuable Application launcer replacement. I'd love to see a Hackmaster version, or even a FLASH version of Silverscreen! Keep up the great work!
Jim Gorton wrote at 03/06/2000
SilverScreen is a great "skin" for the PalmOS. If you follow the instructions in the silver.txt file accompanying the download of the application, you will find easy instructions on completely removing SilverScreen and reverting to the PalmOS desktop. I'm a highly visual person, so having different choices as to the look of the OS is great, and SilverScreen adds a few wrinkles in terms of functionality in the form of a toolbar which comes up at the bottom of the screen, which make it worth the $13 it costs to register it. All in all I'd rate it as a fun, light-duty enhancement. It will be interesting to see what additional "skins" PocketSensei comes up with over time - the current choices are quite satisfying, though the EyeCon scheme is pretty edgy!

1.2 version appears to be slower than previous versions. Also, I liked the original popup tab without the preference buttons on both sides, it seemed to flow better visually. Still a good product with several bugs fixed and several bugs still remaining.
Andrew Tan wrote at 03/06/2000
Much improved over 1.0 version. However, in the BEAMING screen, the up-down scroll button as well as fast-letter jump to is not working at all. Also, if you use Jot, writing on the screen produces 2 letters on both the LHS and RHS of the Palm's screen, which is VERY distracting. In terms of the
bar at the bottom - a tad too big (which can be hidden), I think more functionalities and plugins should be developed. (look at Launch'Em) Overall, a potential killer app, with room for improvment at this point in time.
Trent Klein wrote at 02/27/2000
If application launchers were movies SilverScreen would win the best picture award hands down. Somehow it pulls off this impressive facelift without significantly altering the Palm launcher's tried and true layout. Lastly it adds a nice array of functions that have been sorely needed for some time. Two thumbs up!!!

As a real estate agent in a sprawling community I want access to information to be fast and easy. SilverScreen is a clear winner in both categories and of course delivers this with the best visuals to ever appear on a Palm device. I have been using this program for almost a month now and am absolutely convinced it has no peers. Excellent work.

About SilverScreen, I just don't see why everyone likes it so much. It's nice at first when you install it, but normal day-to-day functionality it lacks. Silverscreen is an awesome looking program - if you only keep the default applications on your launcher. 3rd party apps still remain in black in white icons and it looks a bit awkward. Perhaps there could be an icon library of generic grayscale icons that you could assign to your programs?

The size of the app makes it too big for me to spare the room on my Palm V BUT if only the developers could harness the Flash memory on Palm III+ devices to reduce physical memory usage (can apps be run from Flash?) it could be the switch to make this app truly '5-star'.
Jason Davis wrote at 02/05/2000
This feels more like an amazing demo than an actual app. It does a wonderful job of injecting a little oomph into the normally bland launcher, but doesn't really provide much of the functionality of Launcher 3 or Launch 'Em. The implementation of grayscale is well done but it only has new icons for the built in apps. How often does the average user look at the system icons in his/her launcher? Probably not all that often. Not to mention the fact that if you're a Palm VII or OmniSky user you can't see your PQA apps. However, I appreciate the work and care that went into developing this and hope that it evolves into something a little more complete.

It deletes fine, if you delete it from palm OS, its impossible to delete a program while its running, without totally messing it up. I love silverscreen, especially the feature that lets you drag an Icon from the list mode and drop it on one of the four buttons at the bottom, which let you beam, delete, catorigize, and view info on. very easy, and I like the enhanced look to the whole thing.

Very good, but needs a couple of changes. Since most people have at least a couple of apps they use instead of the default ones it would be great to be able to change the icons of them as well. (i.e. my Parens calculator and DateBk3 datebook). Also it would be great to be able to make new icons on our own.
The only other nice feature would be ordering icons, instead of alphabetical. Besides that it seems to be a well written app, and really improves the visual feel of the pilot.
Martin Cowley wrote at 01/24/2000
I agree with the reviewer below. There are plenty of launchers out there already that have tabs; I've tried them all and removed them all pretty shortly afterwards. The Palm launcher has always felt tidier to me, and adding tabs just clutters things up for the sake of one saved stylus tap. The way SilverScreen augments the standard Palm launcher is superb, and I don't think the icons in the toolbar are too big since they're the same size as the application icons; it makes for a very tidy and consistent interface. The way SilverScreen allows for easy app deletion, filing, beaming and info-getting is very nice and fills the main usability gap in the standard launcher. I'm using it with FlashPro without any trouble, although I have to admit that I haven't tried moving any apps to/from flash since installing it. I never expected to find a replacement launcher that I'd like, let alone consider registering which I did today with SilverScreen.
Pole Olemas wrote at 01/18/2000
Great application! I've tried several different launchers on my Palm V, and that's the only one I've kept for more than few hours. The reason:
<BR>
Neat design. I plead the developers not to listen to the people demanding tabs and/or reducing the toolbox height. It would destroy the perfectly balanced design. Damn, I use SilverScreen mainly because it looks good. If the tabs are introduced (as I'm sure they'll be), please make them optional.
<BR>
All the other launchers seem to have been developed to replace the original one, often resulting in something not nearly as well-designed as the basic launcher. But SilverScreen hasn't gone that way, it just took the original and added some bits here... and there... without actually changing much. Yes, it looks better. Yes, it works more easily. But the FEEL is the same. And that's what counts.
<BR><BR>
Don't fix it if it ain't broken!
<BR><BR>
(that last bit doesn't cover 12h/24h problem, tho. Dear developer, just how big a percentage of Palm users don't use american am/pm system? What do you think?)

OK have taken the plunge and ordered silverscreen. I have noted and commented upon the references to Flashpro. It seems to work fine with me. Just one thing - don't delete a file using palmOS delete - this will still be listed in silver and causes an instant crash (fatal exception) every time. If this happens delete the file silverDB-tric and reset up silver (can only be done in flashpro as the file does not appear in the laucher info/delete listings). In future alway edit files from silver rather than flashpro/palmOS launcher. It would be nice if pocketsensei could make silver a little more intelligent so that it automatically updated it's DB to account for omissions made elsewhere rather than cause a crash.<BR>
The software is otherwise superb. It would be even better if the author produced a wider selection of icons to suit non-built-in applications. Can the toolbar be reduced in height too - to say 60% of it's current size with appropriate scaling of icons.

For future releases...<BR>
1. It needs to have tabs. I miss that from "Launcher." <BR>
2. It could be a little more customizable... like putting different things in the toolbox etc...<BR>
3. It needs to work with Jackflash (I'm thinking of getting that but I want to keep Silverscreen:)<BR>
A plea to anyone out there: Can someone make a greyscale icon editor please so I can make my own cool icons for non Palm apps? Icoedit works great for black and Whites but I don't know of a greyscale version.<BR>

Nice interface. But some improvements required. The launcher does not allow you to write the first letter of a program and jump to it.(in the main programs screen as well as in delete, beam screens) Also, no cycling of categories.
Make this and it should be one of the best, if not the best launcher of the millenium!!!

The only circumstance I have found that the application crashes under is using BigClock v2.51, if you have more than 2 consecutive alarms set, it crashes on the third one. Also it would be good if under preferences you could choose what security program you wish to call, as I use TealLock. And last but not least, if would be great if tabs could be incorporated.

Attractive program. Works well ... BUT beware (as already mentioned) there is a problem with SilverScreen & FlashPro. I just moved an application from FlashROM to RAM and then defragmented the ROM and then moved another apllication from RAM to FlashROM and...FATAL ERROR. I managed to escape just via a Hard Reset but it was close! The problem is that every time you Soft Reset, everything works EXCEPT SilverScreen and because SilverScreen has taken over the built in Apps Screen you're stuck with Fatal Error after Fatal Error whenever you press the Applications screen button. Only a Hard Reset provided a way out. For the time being I suspect that when using FlashPro I'll have to exit SilverScreen and turn all the hacks off. The problem is clearly with SilverScreen because I've tried many alternative launchers with FlashPro 1.07 up and running well, and this is the first time I've had such a disastrous afternoon! Good program but not yet right by any means.
Kevin Glavin wrote at 01/08/2000
The "pop-up toolbox" is very well done. Comes up only when you start to
drag
an application and goes away automatically keeping the screen clean. It
allows you to drag and drop applications onto four different tools (the
same
as found in the App Menu) to perform the different functions. Very
intuitive
implementation. The info command is more complete than Palm's and well
presented. It would be nice if there was a similar command for system
info.
SilverScreen is the best looking of all the launchers I've seen but
manages
to maintain Palm's friendly interface. An excellent product.

hmm.. launcherIII been knocked down by this one. i'm thinking of keeping it after the demo expires. people at silverscreen did a great job!

Three letters:
WOW!
My friend and I have probably downloaded every app. in palm gear.com, and this is far-out the best I have seen. One problem:
when you want to search for a app with graffiti, you cant. Greatest palm app ever!!!

In response to my own review. I was incorrect, there is a referance to how to delete the app. Still I believe it should have a menu option that kicks the user back out to the Palm OS. Great work, and I cna't wait to see the next version!

In response to the review by Brian Mathis, I dare say he's wrong. By my own experience I know the Silverscreen app is absent from the delete menu, WHILE SILVERSCREEN IS RUNNING, uninstalling thoug is quite simple, just run the palm os app in silverscreen, and the original app-launcher is restored, and silverscreen have returned in the delete menu.
Personally i like the app, it's cool.
I would like to suggest the addition of tabs, and the ability to theme the toolbox

Very nice looking palm app. Took me a few minutes to figure out how to get back to the main app launcher but once I found out how, it makes sense. I would have given it a better rating if this item was delt with in the doco, or just as a menu option.
Also needs to have better doco included and maybe a web site...

It looks very good, but it seems the author has taken great pains to ensure that you can't remove this app easily. It takes over your launcher button without asking, and removes itself from the "delete" dialog. If you install it, you can only remove it using a 3rd party app. After removing the app, you can no longer get back to the original launcher, it brings you back to the old version 2 launcher! It might looks good, but it is not worth dealing with the Microsoftian tactics used to keep you from removing it.

This is how the Palm OS should look. I love the pop-up toolbar and the icons look much better. The table view is a nice touch too. It would be nice if there was a way of assigning some of those nice icons to your other applications, as they look plain beside the themed icons.

Looks Great. Especially like the toolbar at the bottom. Would consider buying it if it had tab capability.
