A simple program that handled OS <5 hacks perfectly. Ran without flaws on my Visor Edge and m105. I'd comment on using it with my Tungsten E, but PalmSource doesn't like the idea of Hacks being used with OS 5. Really kinda sad, but still.
Michael Cocke wrote at 02/09/2005
Buried deep in the readme file is the only place you'll find that X-Master doesn't (and apparently will never) work with an OS5 device.
Javier Perez wrote at 08/21/2004
Small, smart, easy to use and it's free. A quite perfect tool for pre PalmOS 5 devices.
I'm using it without any problems since 2002 on several Sony PDA's I owned (SL-10, T625, T665).

This is, BY FAR, the best hack manager out there. It works better than everything else! Some competitors mekes you pay twenty dollars more for a slow hack manager with only a few more unnecessary features. Another works great, but you can't sort the hacks alphabetically or beam, and I have not been able to re-activete it after a soft reset. YAHM has a terrible layout, and, even though it was created to be more stable than other hack managers, it caused THREE HARD RESETS on my palm!!! The other is stripped of features, has a unfrendly interface on color devices, and it makes you pay $5.00 to register (and it used to be $8.00!) X-Master is simply the ONLY hack manager out there that anyone in their right mind would use. Some have both caused hard resets on my palm, so they are out of the question. The only problem I have with X-Master is that it freezes whenever I tried to reactiveate after a soft reset by clicking the box, or when I tried to switch to a diffrent set. This happened on all of the hack-managers I tried with sets, but X-Master comes with X-Master Light, which doesn't have sets!!! This is a tries and true hack manager, and I will NEVER use anytging else.

I've used hackmaster, evplugbase, and x-master. Although I like the layout of evplugbase better, x-master worked flawlessly after switching from a Palm IIIxe to a Handspring Visor.
Also, if you're having a problem with x-master, it might just be one of your hacks. I learned the hard way that not application works after switching from one PDA to the next.

Very nice solution to Hackmaster. Freeware. Works the Same. Also to those users that have problems with hotsyncing and XMaster. Just goto xmaster pref. and choice turn off during hotsync. I had the same problem as a past reviewer, but that fixed it.

Ooops. I wrote a review saying that X-Master was crashing my system. NOT TRUE!!! It was a third-party hack. Other than that one problem - again, not X-Master! - I've never had a day of trouble. Can't recommend it highly enough!
Steven Booth wrote at 09/04/2002
Great program until v1.5. Ever since I installed it, I (periodically) get a "MemoryMgr.c, Line:4450, Invalid chunk ptr" error and reset on Hotsync. I'm going to track down v1.4 and reinstall it. Never had this problem with the older version. Hopefully v1.6 will correct this problem.
Julie Fischer wrote at 08/28/2002
After installing XMaster, I found that my battery would be drained after just a short time of use on my M515. Also, had problems during the HotSync function, once I had HotSync my PDA would be frozen and not move without performing a soft reset. After I did that several times, my unit would not fuction at all. I ended up doing a hard reset and deleted the XMaster out of my backup files, performed a second HotSync and now my unit works fine.

I want to say something to Ed. PadLock Plus is a pretty old program, released when there was only HackMaster as a Hack manager. The program, internally, expects the Hack manager to be HackMaster. It means that it was designed to perform a part of its function by interacting with HackMaster, even using the name "HackMaster" explicitly. Therefore, no Hack manager other than HackMaster can run PadLock Plus. If PadLockPlus is so important for you, Ed, stick with HackMaster. However, it is unfair to blame this program for the fact that it is not satisfying a condition which it is impossible to satisfy. Okay? Okay. Let me return to the issue of X-master's quality itself. IMHO, I think that TealMaster is a better implementation with more functions. However, 1) X-Master is free, and 2) it is much smaller. I was a registered user of TealMaster, but I change to X-Master because I could not move Teal Master into Flash Rom. However, I still think that if only functions and stability are concerned, TealMaster is the best choice.
Steve Gunn wrote at 08/09/2002
I've not had any of the problems listed by other reviewers with 1.5. Some features of Padlock Plus didn't work for me on 1.4, but are now mostly OK with 1.5.
Tuan Tran wrote at 08/07/2002
1.4.1 worked fine on my Clie T415, when I installed 1.5, it caused a fatal error and froze the screen. My Clie wouldn't even come back up w/ a soft reset. I had to end up doing a hard reset and loose everything. Thank goodness, I had just sync'ed before this, so I was able to recover my data. Anycase, 5 stars for 1.4.1, and 1 star for 1.5, hence the 3 star rating. Gonna try it on my NR70 next...
Simon Wolf wrote at 08/01/2002
I used X-Master for a long time with no problems an would have given it a five star rating. Unfortunately, like a previous reviewer, recently I had a problem with my Palm (m515) battery being drained and my Palm not holding a charge and I've now switched to TealMaster.
If X-Master works for you then go for it but if you do start having battery problems then remove this application and see if it was the cause.

Once I installed xmaster, I had no problems. And it even uninstalled hackmaster itself to prevent a conflict. Like many have said, was you use xmaster, you will never go back to hackmaster!

I download something new off this site almost every day to try out, and X-master is the first things I've ever downloaded where a hard reset happened shortly after. However, I cannot directly connect the hard reset to X-master. It happeded after defragmenting my flashpro ROM. I have since opted to leave X-master in RAM, and have had no problems. Its very intuitive and much more user friendly than hackmaster. But keep in mind fellow palmists, backup before installing this gem. Hackmaster only causes an occasional soft reset, which I would take over a one hour restoration set anyday. Other than that concern, its a great program. Oh, I have a IIIc with flashpro and backup buddy (thank God!)

My apologies to the X-Master development team. Upon further testing I determined that the problem I posted in my previous review is not the fault of X-Master, and that I have since put it back into flashROM. I used to keep a couple of hacks in flash and they seem suddenly to disagree with flashROM - after moving all hacks back to RAM the problem disappears. I still have to figure out why this problem occurred suddenly...

This version seems to introduce a peculiar error on my Vx. After moving X-Master into flashrom, the digitizer (I am only guessing it has to do with the digitzer) seems to interpret all contacts as request for the Find function. That is to say whichever part of the screen I touched, the Find function pops up. In addition processing becomes extremely slow - I selected 'Cancel' on the find function and it take around 10 seconds for the Find screen to go away. Soft resetting do not help. This problem has not been repeated once I move X-Master back to RAM. Previous versions of X-Master does not seem to carry the same bug.

Outstanding! X-Master runs flawlessly on my Vx with all kinds of hacks, lets me get rid of TrapWeaver, removes the need to tell HackMaster to reload my hacks on reset, gives me a choice of what order to view hacks in, and adds the ability to define sets. And as an unexpected bonus (for developers at least), it lets me see what SysTraps each hack is using! This is the natural successor to Hackmaster and belongs on every Palm.

As I had hoped and suspected, my bug report proved fruitful. By the next morning, I had a new, and functional version of X-Master in my mailbox from Andreas Linke. The incompatibiliy with the PPK driver has been effectively eliminated! I highly recommend that anyone experiencing problems with this software contact him asap with the details. Chances are, he'll either have a new version with the bugs fixed, or will begin fixing them as soon as he can. Kudo's to Andreas! I haven't tried TealMaster, and thankfully don't need to!

I've just removed it and reinstalled Hackmaster.
For the record, I'm running the following Hacks:
FindHack, Keyboard, MulticlipHack, SwitchHack, TealNotes 1.14, ReScript2.20, AppHack, SelectHack, 3AlarmHack

I like the program a lot, and have high hopes for its continued improvement. I just wanted to let people know of an apparent incompatibility with the Palm Portable (Stowaway) Keyboard driver. With X-Master installed, the driver is disabled, and putting the palm in the keyboard initiates a HotSync. I've sent a bug report to the author, but wanted to make sure others knew of this at least until the bug is fixed. Even though I can't use it due to this bug, I think it's a great program, and give it 4 stars, based on the assumption that they will fix bugs that are reported. Until then, I'm using EVPlugBase, and will switch back to X-Master as soon as this bug is fixed. :)

I emailed the author, and very shortly received not only a reply but an updated version. I've stress-tested this with a number of hacks and programs and am now getting excellent results. Hopefully the new version will be posted here shortly; when it is, I'd have no problem in encouraging Visor owners to switch over promptly.

Unacceptable. Causes HotSync problems on Prism. You can sync once, then the next sync locks up Prism, requiring soft reset.
Even deleting X-master does not cure the problem. I proved it was X-master by doing a hard reset, emptying my backup directory, and syncing 3 times to prove everything worked. I installed X-master only. (The ONLY app on a fresh machine), and it locked up on the 2nd reset. Hard resetting again cured the problem. I managed to restore my Prism with BackupBuddy by deleting xmaster.prc, xmasterDB.prc, and unsaved prefs first.

I felt the need to come back and update my review of X-Master. I was so excited about it that I posted my review right away and it turns out it was a little premature. When I got home from work that night, I started having problems. As soon as I did a HotSync with my Visor Prism on the cradle (I use the HotSync cable at work), I get a fatal error related to a hardware interrupt. Reset and HotSync again and everthing is OK. Next time I HotSync in the cradle, it's the same process all over again. I've switched to TealMaster and I've been using it for a while now without any problems. It sucks that I have to pay $10 for it when there are others that are free, but I that's what I have to pay to get a program that works, then "Oh well."

I cannot be certain that this program was the cause. However, it was the only change made prior to the problem, and the machine really had been quite stable before.
