Application Description
Plucker is an offline Web and eBook viewer for Palm OS® based handheld devices and PDAs and comes with Unix, Linux tools and conduits, and Windows and Mac OSX conduits that let you decide exactly what part of the web that you want to view on your PDA. Plucker includes programs that let you specify exactly what part of the World Wide Web you'd like to download onto your PDA (as long as they're in standard HTML or text format); these web pages are then processed, compressed, and transferred to the PDA for viewing by the Plucker viewer.
Updated Description:
v1.8 (stable) and 1.7.2 (unstable) Release date: 5/22/04
The latest stable release in the Plucker series. Dozens of new features and options. You should upgrade immediately to this release, if you want the latest Plucker code running on your device.
User stuff
* DIA support! This means you can use the "Direct Input Area" on your Tungsten T3 device, or other oddly-sized devices (Alphasmart Dana, TapWave Zodiac, and others) with Plucker in full-screen mode. (Alexander Pruss)
* Dictionary lookup support. If you use RoadLingua, you can now use their dictionaries to look up words directly from within Plucker.
* i-mode support (Dave Maddock)
* The 5-way support in the library has been changed. (Michael Nordström)
New behaviour:
o If the list of documents is only one page then the fiveway will be activated from the beginning.
o If the displayed list of documents includes the last accessed document then the fiveway will be activated.
o The select/centre button will activate the fiveway and the initially selected document will be the last accessed document or if that document isn't visible the document at the middle of the page will be selected. When the fiveway is activated the select/centre button will open the selected document.
o The up/down button will either scroll the list one page up/down (when the fiveway isn't activated) or select the previous/next document in the list (when the fiveway is activated).
o The left button will deactivate the fiveway or if the fiveway isn't activated it will exit the viewer. When the list of documents is only one page pressing left will exit the viewer instead of deactivate the fiveway.
o The right button will display the popup list with different actions for the selected document (when the fiveway is activated). When the fiveway isn't activated the right button will not result in any action.
* The following preferences have been removed:
o "Enable dynamic scrollbar"; always disabled.
o "Enable visual aid"; always enabled.
o "Click sound for links"; always enabled (i.e. it uses the setting for "system sound").
* Faster rotation. (Alexander Pruss)
* Faster anti-aliased fonts on 68K. (Alexander Pruss)
* Support for (slow) colored anti-aliased text in 8bpp. (Alexander Pruss)
* Anti-aliased fonts now work with colored backgrounds. (Alexander Pruss)
* Support for font remapping via font package. (Alexander Pruss)
* Italic font support. (Alexander Pruss)
* Kerning for antialiased fonts. Requires version 0.70+ of PalmFontConv. (Alexander Pruss)
* Font packages can be put on VFS either in /Palm/Launcher/ or in /Palm/Programs/Plucker/Fonts/ (Alexander Pruss)
* You can now tap on a word to either put the word in the search form or to look it up in a dictionary. (Alexander Pruss)
* Added Plucker Plugin Interface (PPI) to configure the interface with third-party dictionary programs. (Chris Hawks)
* Added Catalan translation (Albert Cuesta)
* Added Norwegian translation (Geir-Tore Lindsve)
* Added option to select whether the sort by date should use only the date or if it should use both date and time (faster, but could make the list look 'unsorted'). (Michael Nordström)
* The external card support will be disabled when the device detects a low power situation to avoid errors when trying to access the card through VFS. (Michael Nordström)
* External bookmarks support in viewer. (Dave Maddock)
* When the library is sorted by name, you can select a document by entering the first couple of characters. (Alexander Pruss)
* The parser when using the Python Imaging Library will now automatically

So far Plucker is Good to Excellent. It takes "playing" with to get it to do ALL it can do, which is quite a bit! Between the viewer and configuring it to review the various PPI Plug ins. Takes time but it is fun to play for a day, and then to use and explore all that it can do.

I had difficulty in downloading and using this program and then decided I would continue using my Acrobat PDA version instead. Plucker would not unload or delete. I searched and cleaned every reference to it on my HD and Registry, yet it still sits on my desktop and will not delete.Keeps telling me it's being used by another program!!! If that is correct it is not using it's own name.

Tried on Tungsten C. Interfered with "Palm Reader" an eBook reader that came with the Palm. The error gave the website for the Palm Reader. Apparently, though my Palm was brand new, "Palm Reader" is now called "eReader" and had new software. Downloaded the new software for eReader, and now both work fine on their own, but they seem to fight over who has file associations if any are on the device. Since Plucker doesn't seem to do anything that isn't already included in other programs I have (eReader, Avantgo), I really don't have much use.

This program is fantastic!! Now I can automagically download my favorite news and comics sites and sync them to read on my PDA! Plus some of my extremely heavy text books for college have websites with the text this program allows me to easily download the text to read on my palm. Thanks a bunch!
