  • Application Description

Pente is the English name of the Asian game of ni-nuki, which is itself a version of the game of go-moku.

Pente is played on a 19x19 grid with stones in two different colors. Each player chooses one set of stones; then the players take turns placing their stones on any unoccupied intersection until one player wins.

Stones may be captured in pairs only. To capture a pair of stones, a player must place one stone on either side of the pair. When the second side is placed, the center two stones are captured. This counts as one capture. The game continues until a player gets 5 in a row or captures 5 pairs.

This implementation includes a computer AI with 6 levels and complete undo/redo support. Note that at the highest levels, Pente may take some time to make a move.

While I have tried to make Pente work in PalmOS 2.0, I am unable to test it on anything earlier than PalmOS 3.0.

The Pente ZIP file contains English, German, and French language versions of the game.

    Updated Description:

Did some updating due to testing with the latest PalmOS development tools and the PalmOS 5.0 visual glitches. Things should be consistant between all PalmOS versions now and a non-critical bug was found and killed.

My singularly favorite game on the palm... hadn't played in years and brings back great college memories! Only possible improvement for this FREE & small app would be IR multiplayer mode

A tough opponent and an intrinsically much more interesting game than GoMoku ("five in a row"); I can hold my own at the lowest two levels but level three and above are too good at the moment.

Although it works the program needs a tidyup for OS5; the title bar buttons show as black on my Zire 71 and hi-res would make the (miniscule) pieces much easier to read and tap.

Amazing game. The computer is good! Too slow on level 4 though. Future enhancement needs to add Bluetooth & IR dual player mode.

This is an excellent Pente game. I've played Pente for years and this game is still challenging at level 3. Minor problems with the game are:
    1. You need to performe a "New Game" after each game. (the short cut helps)
    2. The first player should be based on the loser of the previour game.
    3. The small size of the grid leads to mistakes. (Undo is possible)

These are minor complaints however don't detract from game play. It is a great way to spend a few minuets, while waiting for something.

This is a great game and the palm player is smart. It is very challenging and addictive. Level 1 is easy to beat. level 2 is pretty tough. I have yet to beat level 3. The game play is very fast. It's almost too fast. With such a large board, it would be great if the developer would add a mark of some type to the last piece played so that it could be easily seen. Great job! I look forward to any improvements that you make. --Matt
