  • Application Description

Do you wish that the default font on your PDA were smoother or more readable? Or maybe you would like fonts that are smaller but still very legible... or bigger? Perhaps using real italics would look cool? Or do you have a favorite Windows font you want to use on your PDA (subject to patent/copyright/contract law)? Or maybe you would like to read Cyrillic or Eastern European texts? Easily make your ebook reader, browser and other applications look better than ever!

Smoothed fonts (antialiased fonts) decrease font "jagginess". FontSmoother lets you use smooth fonts in almost all applications on your hi-res OS 5 PDA (not lo-res devices like Treo 600 or some Zires). FontSmoother includes over two dozen free smooth font packages (including two Russian / Cyrillic ones and two Polish ones) and you can convert Windows TrueType fonts with the free EasyConvert utility available here or the included Quick Make Font utility (please ensure you do not violate your local patent or copyright laws or the font EULA). You can use the converter to generate Cyrillic or Eastern European fonts. There is also a collection of free fonts here and you can download dozens more via a link in the readme.html file in the download.

There is a free 8 day trial, after which all smooth fonts default to their non-smooth versions until registration is completed. Upon registration, you get free upgrades for the lifetime of the product.

Note 1: After the 8 days, font smoothing should remain in effect for free in the following applications: PalmBible+, BibleThumper, Bible Explorer with You, Bible with You, OliveTree Bible Reader, Concordance with You, myBible, BibleReadme, Universalis Liturgy of the Hours, and Virtual Rosary.

Note 2: FontSmoother does not support Chinese / Japanese / Korean display systems.

You can use FontSmoother as a standalone program, or, if you like, in conjunction with the latest version of Fonts4OS5, FontHackV or FontSubst, if these work on your device.

    Free additional downloads for FontSmoother:

Not only is this an excellent and robust program, the developer was extremely responsive at fixing the few bugs I was able to run into. Within hours of reporting an issue, I had fixes in my inbox -- all while the developer was on "vacation" at a ski lodge during the Christmas holidays! Thanks, Alex!

I have tried this program and, wow, it is bravo!
Compare a Palm with this utility and one without, you will definitely find the differences. What can I say? With this utility turned on, Palm becomes more attractive. There are times I turn on Palm for nothing, just to see how elegant the smoothed fonts now looks!
With this utility, Palm has finally got a fantastic feature that Pocket PC has since 2003. Great utility!

There are some unperfect things, however.
One is it is still not compatible with CJK (Chinese Japanese Korean) OS. Although the compatibility increases with updates, I really hope the author can finally solve all the conflicts.
Another is about font making utility. It gives you the ability to convert the fonts that you like, but I notice that all the fonts I make can not display symbols correctly. With the fonts the author provides, there is no problem. Either my fault or the font generator's fault, still no idea.

All in all, this is a utility you really should have a try!

Over all this is an excellent program! I use it on my Zodiac 2 and it has made the look and feel of the text as good as the graphic capability of my Z. It works flawlessly on 95% of my apps. Also the ability to import any font is a plus. If you want your Palm software to look as good as it can, this is the way to go. Well worth the money!

AWESOME program for not just introducing anti-aliased text but for allowing custom fonts as well!

I will say that "Smart Layout" isn't always so smart as it occasionally drops letters off the end of icons; but disdabling that cured the problem straight away. I never saw any huge advantage with it enabled anyway.

And as convertd fonts are honkin' huge (average 400kb per typeface@pt size), be conservative on how many typefaces you wish to use. It's not the program but the fonts themselves. Also, don't be fooled by the Palm's screen. Don't bother with 8pt at all. :-)

I use a Palm T3 and would recommend this to ANYBODY. Even despite the "smart layout" ssue (for 1.46 does that issue apply) this is worthy of 5 stars.

i tried this on my T5
The fonts look nice but, in most applications the text would be incmplete or missing letters. example "john" would read "joh " in agendus.
I tried many different fonts and styles and sizes, seems everyone of them had some quirk. once I went back to native font and OS the problems went away.
It looks pretty but is it 100 percent compatable?
I need to be able to accuratel y read all of the text in my PDA.
I can' reco end th s t this tim .
Ma be whe I can read al the chara te s I wil b y it.
    :)
