  • Application Description

    Chime announces time in synthesized human voice, chime and vibration. Chime reminds time in a gentle way. Instead of setting regular alarms, Chime allows users to specify a schedule to suit their own living habits.

    It works great to remind you time, for example, when you are:

    • listening to MP3 music with headphones;
    • riding a skate, bicycle or bike;
    • jogging or doing exercise;
    • conducting a presentation (silent mode) or
    • hosting a meeting (silent mode);

    Please feel free to let us know if you have more creative usage of this interesting feature.

    I have a little bit coughing and it was suggested that I should drink warm or hot water regularly, small amount a time but drink frequently. So I use Chime and it reminds me every 15 minutes.

    It's a bit big, but it's not the fault of the author that Chime couldn't be run on the SD card because you have to reside the program in the heap memory if you want it to be run or called up automatically, it's the same for all other alarm programs such as Butler, that's probably the design of PalmOS.

    If you want to save RAM space, try using PowerRun (in Palmgear too), it lets you put a lot of other non-automatically-run program on an SD card instead. I moved a lot of games, document reader, money manager to the SD card, so there's enough memory for Chime.

    This program is great! I didn't know I was missing this feature until I tried this program. Despite its great size, it's earned a permanent place on my T|X.

    There is room for improvement, however. First, as one reviewer noted, the synthesized voices are terrible. I'll never use them and they probably contribute a lot to the program's size. Second, I too would like the ability to control the volume at each hour. I can think of a number of reasons to use that feature. Third, I'd be interested in having the program chime the hour number, but I don't like the idea of my PDA freezing the whole time.

    Smartly done app. I've been using this on my Tungsten C for a couple weeks and it's performed flawlessly. I chose the chime/count option, and it's like being within earshot of a chiming mantle clock all the time. Love it.

    Particularly nice is the app's ability to turn the chime off during certain hours. I keep the chime off from midnight to 5 a.m., when I'm in my heaviest sleep. From 5 am on, I hear the chime at 15 min intervals from my pda on my nightstand and it helps me gradually get my day underway.

    A few observations:
    (1) The synthesized voice is typically robotic and fuzzy sounding. I can't imagine many people will choose this option.
    (2) The chime is outstanding: a very realistic low bell for the hour strikes and a higher bell fo the 15 min intervals. Keep in mind that if you choose the count option, your PDA will freeze up if you're using it when the chime is striking--and if it's 12 o'clock, you'll be waiting for a good 25 seconds until the PDA is freed. But this is an infrequent, minor nuisance. (If you found this a real bother--I don't--you could deslect the count option, thereby opting for a single strike for all hours.)
    (3) During long car trips, Chime is a great companion. I place my PDA on the center console by the cupholders, and it's very nice to hear the chimes every quarter hour. Helps the time pass, and helps me stay alert during the drive.
    (4) About the only enhancement I can think of would be to allow the user to select the volume level for the hours in advance, in the same way the user can activate/deactivate the app. During office hours (Mon-Fri, 7a-6p), I keep Chime's volume on 1.5 on the volume slider scale; at home, I keep it at 3.0. If those volume settings could be activated automatically, it'd be great. But that's a flourish; the app is outstanding as is.
    (5) For the record, I've had no compatibility problems with any other apps, and have experienced no stability problems. If you have an app that automatically kicks off (like a backup program), you should select a time that Chime won't be activated. I reset an automatic backup to 12:05 pm from 12 noon: Chime was kicking in first, and it sometimes wouldn't finish striking the 12th hour until 12:01, which was causing the backup to not be activated. Setting the backup to 12:05 solved the problem.

    As a musician, this application is great while practicing - set to chime every 15 mins, and 'Chime 1.2' helps to keep my practicie time focused - no more spending too much time on that difficult passage and not enough on basic technique. I had tried other coundown timer style apps, but this is by far the most useful, and chimes every time! works perfectly on my Zire 71.
