I had planned to write a longer review of this program, but there's no need -- "Chess Quantum" is the worst Palm chess program I've ever tried. This is the first commercial chess program I've seen that DOESN'T EVEN FOLLOW THE BASIC RULES OF CHESS. If that's enough to make you decide against buying (or even trying) this program, you can stop here and go try out one of the very good PalmOS chess programs available here. If not, read on.

In the first few moves of my first game with Chess Quantum, it made several bad blunders, capping them all by moving its king rook twice and then CASTLING KINGSIDE! This, while PLAYING AT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL and making fewer than 20 moves an hour! It took CQ from two to five minutes to make each move, even when there was only one move available! Chess Quantum is painfully slow, pitifully stupid, and patently ignorant.

The progam lacks even the basic features necessary to a good chess game. It can't record a game in algebraic notation. It offers no time controls at all, whether "Game in X" or "Move in X". Game quality is controlled (if at all) by three poorly-labeled slider controls on an undocumented screen. The unreliable move recognition will have you swearing unreservedly at your Palm for the entire ten minutes that you keep this program before deleting it.

As for the 28-page "manual," it is almost as worthless as the program. The first six pages comprise the license agreement, which (I was amazed to discover) includes a rejoinder against using this program to operate "nuclear facilities, aircraft navigation or communication systems, air traffic control, direct life support machines, or weapons systems!" I'm surely glad that they warned me.

The next ten pages attempt in broken English to explain how to purchase the program (which I would hope you won't do), how to download and unzip the program and documentation (which you would have already done by the time you read this), and how to install and uninstall the program (which should be done as nearly consecutively as possible). Thrown into the middle of this mess are seven tiny screenshots from the program, without a single word of explanatory text to accompany them.

I referred to the manual as "almost worthless" because the remaining 11 pages are actually an excellent summary of the laws of chess. They should be, since they are directly plagiarized from the FIDE Handbook--and without a word of credit given.

Have you ever driven for five hours, getting lost several times on the way, finally arriving to find that your destination wasn't even close to being worth the Trip? So do I, now. Chess Quantum is the shareware equivalent of National Lampoon's Vacation.

I admit, this application does give you more challenge, not to mention it's progressive AI. I can teach my children how to play with this, since this apps provide an easy to difficult level.
