That design worked well in normal light, but it created the two problems NewPen was built to solve: no illumination of the writing area in the dark, and no writing area at all on devices that dropped the silkscreen in favor of a physical keyboard.
With NewPen active, a Usenet poster in a February 2003 alt.comp.sys.palmtops.pilot discussion described the mechanism concretely: "NewPen creates a small dotted square on the bottom right hand corner of your screen. Tap it, and you activate NewPen's on-screen Graffiti." From that point, Graffiti strokes could be written across the usable screen area rather than in a separate strip, and tapping the same indicator again turned the feature back off. Because the screen carried its own backlight — unlike the printed silkscreen — writing in a dark room became possible without any extra light source, which is precisely the low-light use case PalmGear's own product description called out.
The clearest surviving record of NewPen in real-world use comes from a September 1, 2002 review of the Handspring Treo 90 published on Computing Unplugged and written by Vladimir Campos. The Treo 90 ran Palm OS 4.1 and replaced the usual Graffiti silkscreen with a miniature thumb keyboard, a design choice aimed at users who wanted fast text entry without a stylus.
